Anybody notice Epic's Tim Sweeney's response to an e-mail over at http://www.beyond3d.com

Paraphrasing....they asked Epic (since they have marketing deal with Nvidia) what they think about Valve's not-so-veiled taunts of Nvidia hardware and where they think Nvidid did, or didn't go wrong in their architecture design....this is the response...

Hi Anthony,

Well, you could run hardware vendor funded benchmarks and interview people like Gabe and I whose companies have signed big marketing deals with hardware companies. Or you could just write some DirectX9 shader code and draw your own independent conclusions. How's your C++ skills? :)

-Tim

Well isn't THAT an interesting comment.

One way you could take this is....

"Any vendor who inks a deal with a hardware vendor may or may not be tainted by their marketing deal."

or your could read it this way...

"Sure, we know Nvidia's architecture stinks like moldy tangerines, but we aren't going to publically say that, are you nuts!?"

Not even close...

The 9700 set the bar extremely high...

I won't be upgrading until NEXT generation chips hit.. Which then will be worth the hefty price tag..

Bah, worthless launch IMHO with the 9800XT. Pretty dissappointing. Here we are a year later with basically the same damn chip and not that much of a performance gain...at least IMHO. Dyanimic overclocking? Big whoop. 5-10% faster? Big whoop. Guess I'll wait for 9800 prices to come down some more before tossing my 9600 Pro. http://www.bjorn3d.com/_preview.php?articleID=349 http://www.hothardware.com/hh_files/S&V/radeon_9800xt.shtml

But the thing is that ATI can slack off as much as feel like due to Nvidia's ineptitude. Sad situation, I think we would have seen a 13 micron 9800 at the least or a new core if Nvidia had it's $hit together.

Hello all,

Yes, this is my first post but I've been lurking around here for quite some time absorbing all the great info. Anyway, I have some more info that's definitely related to the ATI R360 that I thought should be added to the thread. I stumbed onto this. It looks like this is the company that designed the fansink for the 9800 XT. There's a few pictures of their work and there's even a cool animation of the assembly. NJoy!
