Hello, i have just assembled my p5b-e-plus rig. Could not get ahci drivers to work tho. am I right in thinking you have to F6 them?.... Was trying to install intel matrix thingy thru my USB floppy in windows setup and it wouldnt recognize any drivers...nothing. Can you f6 thru a usb FDD??? GR8 Resource peeps!

This morning I got a BSOD when launching Internet Explorer, so I turned down my OC down from 401 to 390.

When i rebooted, the computer no longer detected the Keyboard. (at bios or in windows).

What can I do now? I have tried 2 keyboards that connect at the purple plug, and neither one of them is detected.

I dont know if the keyboard port went bad or what.. Is my only option to RMA the board and get a new one? PLease help.

Try turning off the power supply, turn it back on and boot up. Let us know what happens.

I understand that using a USB Floppy won't work. You need to use a standard FDD floppy.

 
Update...

I just removed the mobo battery and cleared the RTC.

Now when I power up, the system doesnt post at all. No beeps either. The mobo light comes on, and the fans power up. Thats it.

Any suggestions? Things were going so well, and now my PC is dead. 🙁
 
I have tried powering down the power supply. It doesnt help.

At first i was just having keyboard detection errors, but clearing the BIOS did something very bad.. I cant post now.

Just checking - you did move the RTC jumper back, correct? Trying disconnecting everything, but the video and ram.
 
i did move the jumper back to the 1-2 position.

i removed all hardware besides the video and ram, still no post.

i tried removing the ram, and I got the beeps saying there is a ram problem error.

i think i am in trouble here... any more troubleshooting ideas?

Dwillingm if you got a frend who got a different RAM chip try to start the PC with that chip(if it got a lower speed).I got the same problem with my new PC and I got to take it to a computer shop to make it post.After that install your chip back and everythink will be ok.It cost me 40$ for that trick but I don't have another ram chip to play with.

I just did it and it worked perfect! I did also have to disconnect the second HDD for the Micron controller to boot the first HDD. I left the second one hooked up at first and it kept trying to boot from it. Disconnected it and Windows XP booted right up. Installed the drivers, shut down, reconnected both HDDs back to where they were, booted up and now have a new SATA contoller in Device Manager.

I ran the HDTach test and got the burst speed about 5mb/s faster than before, so I'm happy as a clam!

I do notice now though that the DMA for both drives is not shown in Device Manager anymore. I also have a SATA DVD burner and now Device Manager does not show the DMA for that one either. I can open up Nero Info Tools and see the DMA for both HDDs there and it's now Ultra DMA 6, where before it was DMA 5. The Info Tools does not show the DMA for that SATA DVD though. Dunno how I'm going to be able to see that now.

Try what buc said, switching the ram sticks.
Have you tried just one stick?

A further comment of using the AHCI drivers. I've now used this driver and have come to the conclusion that it isn't necessary if using SATA drives not in Raid or that do not have NCQ. I originally posted an increase in burst rate in HDTach but it now appears to have been a fluke. HDTach gives different readings sometimes and after running it a few times, the speeds are virtually the same as with the stock XP driver. One other thing about using this driver. For some reason, monitoring programs such as SiSoft Sandra (and others) do not report accurately from this driver. The reported readings of the drives (both SATA HDDs and SATA DVD drives) are all wrong. Device Manager no longer gives any info regarding transfer rates of anything hooked up to SATA ports when using this driver (I also have a SATA DVD burner hooked up to a SATA port).

It was an interesting experience for me to install this driver without having to re-install XP. Had to unhook the second HDD (or computer wouldn't boot) along with changing the first HDD to Micron controller (to be able to boot after changing BIOS SATA setting to AHCI). A side effect of this was that since I only had a swap file on the second HDD, when first booting from the first drive, XP created a swap file on it (at the time, I was wondering about all the hard drive activity that was going on when first booting from it). After I was all done installing the driver and had both HDDs hooked back up to original SATA ports, XP did not show the swap file on the first HDD (still showed no swap file set for C drive in XP properties like it was before) but it was there and approx 2 gigs in size (I found this out when I went to defrag and saw the drive had 2 more gigs on it than it had before). I had to manually delete it (by showing protected OS files in Folder Tools).

Anyway, thought I'd pass on this experience. For SATA drives that have NCQ (mine don't), I imagine this driver would be a must to be able to use that performance enhancing feature, and of course for RAID configurations also. For the rest though, this driver is not needed.
 
Just finished building my new system.
I have only built about 5 so far - all with Asus boards. I would place my pc knowledge in the 'beginner' category.
I never had any problems with my Asus boards, but after reading the P5B Deluxe boards, I must say I was a bit worried right before I first turned on the power switch.
It posted first time on power up. Then I installed XP and updated the bios to 1004.
I intend to oc the proc to 3.0, once I figure out how (any quick guides? most posts here go above and beyond my knowledge)(or is there a bios setting to have the bios do it automatically ?)
BTW, I don't intend this to be discussed here but the Antec 900 is awesome.

I have a quick question on the P5B-E. I tried searching both on the forum (although AT search is so picky) and through google but couldn't come up with anything.

Does the P5B-E have any issues with the Thermalright Ultra 120 heatsink? I'm planning on building a C2D PC with the P5B-E and I want to use an Ultra 120 with Scythe 120x25mm fan (same as in Anandtech review of the cooler) but I want to make sure I won't have to hack up the HSF to mount it.

Not sure what other info is relevant, two DIMMs, standard Northbridge (to start anyway), 8800GTS 640mb etc.

Don't know too much about the P5B-E, but I didn't have any probems with that heat sink and my P5B Deluxe. I would think it would be the same with the P5B-E, but I could be wrong 🙂

Thanks for the fast reply 3NF. I've done some google'ing and have read of several people with the P5B-E and an Ultra 120 without problems.

I've also found people using the Ultra 120 in Antec P180 which is the case I'm planning on using, so I should be fine on both fronts.

Now the challenge is to make sure my retailer has the 1.02G revision (For more VDIMM options). Luckily my roommate just bought a P5B-E from the same place last week so I'll check his BIOS after work tonight.

I'm not familar with that case, but does it have a removable motherboard tray? It's a BIG heatsink, and so you may want to mount it before putting the board into the case.

I don't think the P180 has a removable tray from what I'm reading in the manual online. It seems people are able to install Ultra 120's and Tuniq Towers in this case so I'm assuming they install it on the MB first (with the brace on the back of the MB) then drop the MB into the case. I'll have to think about it first as yes the Ultra 120 looks pretty ridicolous.
 
I have the Antec P180 case, and use the Zalman 9700LED cooler (it's pretty large).

I installed the bracket on the motherboard, then installed the motherboard in the case.

Since the case was laying on it's side, I had no problem installing the cooler after the motherboard was in the case. YMMV.
 
I am having a little trouble with my memory and I was looking for some pointers. I have 2GB Patriot DDR2800 with my FSB running at 410. I have manually set the voltage at 2.25v for the memory and set the timings as 4-4-4-12-35 for the memory with no problems at all. When I am in the section to change the FSB, you can adjust the memory there as well. What I did (and believe i was wrong), i changed the memory so that whatever FSB I was running, the choice was close to DDR2800. Currently, I am given 6 choices in there, AUTO, DDR2 820, DDR2 10xx, and ones much higher that I don't remember off hand. I have set mine to the DDR2820.

The problem comes down to this. When the POST screen comes up, it lists my memory as DDR2 4200. When I open up Memset, it says that i have DDR2 533 installed. I am thinking that i have the setting for the memory on the wrong one?? I tried loosening up the timings 5-5-5-15-42 and putting it up to the higher one- DDR2 10xx- but it wn't load. It will show DDR2 5300 on the post screen though. I also tried setting it to AUTO in which it showed DDR26400 on the POST screen but gave me a failed overclock.

I am thinking that I am going to have to start all over at stock settings and set the memory at stock and then start ot overclock from there changing only the FSB and the vcore up from there??? AM i really losing much performance running my memory at a slower speed with the processor at 410FSB (3.28 Mhz)? When I ran PCMark05, i got a score of about 8100 so I don't believe that I am that far off.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
 
Mine does that too. Shows the PC2 4200.
But on CPU-Z it shows the right bus for the memory settings.
So I guess it is a problem with the BIOS.
They only way I saw it running in the right bandwidth was when the FSB was 266 and the memory set to 800 Mhz.
Running assynch.
But I do not worry about this problem.
Did you try to use the CPU-Z to check what speed your system is running?

Yeah, CPUz shows pc800, but when i pull up memset 3.0 it shows it as pc533 which makes me wonder. Now all i need to do is figure how to get it stable at 425-450 FSB!! I can boot there and the temps are good, but no matter how high i set the vcore, i can't get it stable for over 45 seconds on Orthos.

Did you get your x1 link width sorted out yet? Ive made some changes on mine and I was able to show x16 all the way up to 450 FSB, but obviously i haven't been stable up there. I'm thinking i might want to try lowering the multiplier to 7 and raising the FSB up to 500 to see what happens. My memory should be able to handle that without a problem, but you never know!! 😛
 
Yeah PCI Ex x16 now working.
But what I have noticed that in some FSB frequencies no matter what you do, or voltage you set. It will remain in x1.
I haven't OCed at where I really wanted, that would be 450 475 Mhz.
My water pump died on me.
And now I think I will go air with the Thermaltake Big Typhoon since the Thermalright Ultra 120 has a prohibitive price here in Brazil. Since you have to buy a good fan with it.
But I will do more test with the FSB frequencies that the x1 problem can't be fixed.
And of course the OC.

I have not ran memtest since the first test I made.
I will check, but I think it does work at the frequency you set. Even with the BIOS recognize it wrong.
In the OC I am running the same as you are 3.2 Ghz with vcore of 1.2875 in BIOS.
But I am aiming for 3.5 ghz @ least.
