@Danap

you cant expect to overclock it much with the intel hsf. i read somewhere its only good for melting down into something more useful like a paperweight lol

get a decent hsf and update that bios to 0609

LOL

ya I should get an artic freezer pro 7 tomorrow. Plus some braiding for all the dam wires coming from my new PSU, which currently block the top intake and front intakes really badly.

I can't use 0609 because I have a vanilia P5B and 0309 is the latest BOIS for my board.

I actually thought I had order the delux, thats a lesson to all don't order will under the influence of Smirnoff.

Does the zalman northbridge flower work well? I was thinking or getting one but as yet haven't been able to find a good review of it.

One issue I encountered was rather strange. I was playing the MMORPG Final Fantasy XI on my system using the front USB port with my Xbox360 control pad to control the game. Running fine and eventually the game would just randomly freeze. I'd restart and it would do it again within about 10minutes.

This system is stable because I 24hour orthos tested it and 15hour memtest with no errors.

So I went in and disabled the legacy USB support. So far I haven't froze up on Final Fantasy. I thought perhaps it was the Video Card's overclocked settings although this is the same settings used on my AMD x2 system I had previously. And no other game that I had tried (Oblivion, Quake4, FEAR) crashed ever and those are much more demanding on the GPU.

This led me to believe it was a USB issue...has anyone had any similar issues with the legacy USB support turned on?

Cmdrredd,

My COD2 freezes during map loads...usually after the 1st map successfully loads. I'll disable the legacy USB and see if that solves my problem.

@BigTwin

Try reinstalling the game. I couldn't even load the game before I reinstalled now it works fine.

Has anyone come up with an explanation for the double boot? Double restart? If you don't know what I am talking about when I do a cold boot or restart, the computer boots up for 1 second turns off, and then turns on a second time and boots up fine.

My A8R-MVP asus board also did that. Very peculiar.

raid i run throught the ich8r is so fast. not had it slow. it faster than any raid i used on asus boards over the years. i like to try raid 10 thats 4 drives. the performance near to raid 0 and backup of raid 1. so 3 hard drives can go down and you still keep your data. putting 4 raptors in raid 0. thetheres a bandwidth problem. i dont know if it any better to get a dedicated raid card.

we all get the double boot. 1 sec power on then off then on again. it like it testing the settings are ok. its seems to be the norm.

its here beta 0609 its better than 0507 even though its beta. http://www.iamxtreme.net/andre/P5B-ASUS-Deluxe-0609.rar i got more oc first time when all was set on auto. that was impressive. i get more stability and higher oc on less voltage. it has some ram fixes. only use it with the p5b deluxe. all the bios have bugs but the best remedy for previous issues.

i had 40mm fans on my nb sb and they were noisy running at 5780rpm turned them down to 3000rpm but temp rose too much. i wanted them high to keep the temp down and that created a drone. so i swapped them for zalman flower coolers gets better temps without the fans. dissapates the heat due to the fins. i get 26c on nb now so im happy. no noise. i have 2 120mm fans side panel fans blowing down on the mb, nb helps too. i sealed up any pci slots and vents to create a pressure effect to get the hot air out.

@danap
sell that p5b and get the deluxe but best wait to see how good abit board. once you get past 3.4 gig+ the speed is silly. it worth it to run it stable at that temps however means neccessary. im addicted cant stop now. dont want to run under 3.4 anymore.

theres a northbrige review here
http://www.madshrimps.be/printart.php?articID=473

also checkout the northpole micro meant to be good too but i stayed away as it has a fan but claim it quiet. http://www.modthebox.com/review475_1.shtml

Markymoo,
Can you post your bios settings for your overclock? I have the same cpu and ram, except my ram is cas 4. I'm also running stock cooling, so I realize I won't be able to push as far. Just trying to fiddle a little at this point. Thanks.

something very very very very strange I just fixed. I was getting memtest errors out the wazoo at FSB400 multiplyer set to 7, DDR2-800 speed (1:1). So I tried stock 266FSB and DDR2-800 (3:2) and got no errors. Then I went to 350FSB at 8x multi, 5-5-5-15 timings and used the 3:2 divider for DDR2-1050 speed. I giot NO ERRORS.

How can a faster speed get no errors vs a lower speed eh? Very odd indeed.

P5B Deluxe
E6400
Corsair XMS2-6400 (rated 5-5-5-12 @ 800Mhz)

Edit: I was thinking of trying the 0609 beta but now that I'm stable like this I'm afraid to mess up a good thing. I'll wait for the next official release before I change anything.

Edit#2: it's not stable at that speed like I thought. I'm leaning toward a USB issue. Disabling the Legacy USB support and going back to 400FSV at 7x multi with DDR2-800 speeds at 5-5-5-12 is stable again.

I see everyone using 800 ram but what is a good 1000 ram to use with this motherboard? Is the increase in price worth it for OC etc?

What's everyones temp when OCing? I'm OCing 9x350 and my cpu temps are running about 60C...(Nijna plus cooling). What temp is just too hot and should be avoided?

The board does not support 1GHz ram, the fastest it does is 800MHz.

@BigTwin
I just installed an artic freezer 7 pro and moved my cables about. Runnng at 325MHz FSB (can not the ing to go higher) running at 54 degrees C, fan speed is 600-650 rpm, under heavy load the fan speed gets to 1389rpm and temp upto 58 degrees.
Not sure what the max temp is but I had my E6600 running fine at 65 degrees.

I am using probe 2, and then checked with a thermacouple. Probe 2 is reading on average 5 degrees high for me, some have measured a degree over reading probe 2 though.

Just an aside... the beta 0609 gave me more stability (no more memory errors) because it supposedly fixed compatability issues with specific memory speeds and timings.

And Coretemp reports 7c lower temps than with 0507. It is possible, but not likely that Asus fixed the way the information is obtained from the motherboard and CPU.

Just a note that if you use the beta 609 BIOS that you may want to go ahead and reset your CMOS via the jumper on the motherboard. I had to do this in order to reset everything in the BIOS or it would freeze in the menus.

Hmmmm, I just ran probe II and it had the same reading as Core temp...also, I haven't had any menu freezing so maybe I won't need to rest the CMOS..is 60c too hot? When Probe II executed, it was sounding a scary temp alarm :)

at load or idle?

I am using probe also and am getting MB at 28C and CPU at 32C. This is at adle. I went into Bios and CPU was 2C higher, so I think probe is pretty accurate at this point. What did you all set your CPU Q-fan profile to? I put it at optimal. I noticed the CPU fan reading at ~920rpm, while in Auto mode, it was ~1500 or so. In auto, the CPU temp was 3C cooler too. I didn't notice the fan adjusting to cpu load like they say in the manual for the optimal mode.

60c is very high IMO. I idle at about 50c with an 80F ambient temp. Lower when I shutdown everything in my room for the air conditioner to cool everything down to about 76F. This is at 3.2Ghz on my E6400. If I run at 2.8Ghz with a much lower vcore I can get even lower temps.

Try running Orthos small FFT to stress the CPU and I gurantee you'll be rocketing from 60c to 70+ in no time.
