Yep.

I received my ASUS P5B motherboard the other day, and I was getting uCode errors from the start. I flashed the bios with the newest release, and that problem was solved. I racked my brain trying to get Windows XP SP2 installed, but I kept getting BSOD's when I installed drivers. Finally figured I had a bad install disk. I installed Win XP Sp1, then installed SP2 after, then ran all the updates. Now everything is running smooth. In the beginning of this post, some people were complaining about the G.Skill ram. That's what I'm using, and it's not causing me any trouble. I got it from Newegg for about $89.00 per 1 GB. So I ordered 2. No trouble at all with my ram. They're the PC6400 (800 Mhz).

My only problem is the temperature of the CPU. I have the E6600, and it's holding steady at 50 C at idle. I went pick up some thermal grease and tried that, but it's not working. I also picked up a Zalman 7000B. I'm not sure if it will install due to the tall Northbridge heat sink. I need something though. If anyone knows of a good after-market fan for the CPU, please share.

I built my first computer today with following parts
P5B
C2D E6400
SATA HD http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822148144
IDE DVD-RW http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16827152058
1GBx2 DDR2-800
Zalman 9500 LED
BIOS Ver.0309

When I boot, eveything seems to be fine except IDE DVD DRIVE. Jumber is set to Master and power light is on and it spins. FDD is working for sure because I can boot from FD. I am not even sure HD is also working.
Bios POSTs. However I can't get my dvd rom to get recognized. I try to boot with Windows xp bootdisk (Both Floppy and CD) but it does not find DVD ROM at all. This DVD drive works in my other desktop.
Also I changed to CDROM which is working in other desktop, but it fails.
I've checked cable connections, but they are all fine.

Do you have any idea what is going on.

I'm no expert by any means, but I have your same motherboard, so I'll throw out my opinions. My motherboard came with the PATA connector enabled. I don't know if you can disable it, but you may be able to, which leads me to think yours may be disabled. I doubt your CDROM and DVD ROM are both bad. Also, put your DVD-ROM jumpers on CS (cable select). I've never had trouble with all my devices on CS. I can't remember the last time I manually put a device on master or slave.
If all this fails, reset your bios to the default settings to see if that helps.
I plugged in my DVD Writer from the start, and it worked with no trouble. I have mine set to CS, not master or slave.

(Two Samsung SP2004C in RAID 0 on a nForce 4 SLi)

That's right, my scores are better, but that's not my point.

I have a nForce 4 SLi based system and get better scores then a friend with a P5B Deluxe based system. Next to that, if you benchmarks both types of HDD's (the 200 and 250 version), you will see that the 250 is visible faster then the 200.

But my RAID with two slow HDD's is faster then his RAID with two fast HDD's, so it seems that there is something wrong with the RAID controller in the ICH8R

So, at this point, is there any point in trying to use OCZ Gold DDR2-800 memory in this board (already ordered)?
If not, does anyone have any experience with PNY DDR2-667 (available locally)?

probably not. I've heard some ppl say it works like a charm but on the other hand there's even more ppl saying it doesn't even boot. someone gotta be lying...

Well, I picked up a 533mhz 512 stick of centron from Cusa over lunch, so hopefully that will work if I need it--if not, I'll return it!

Thanks. PATA was enabled and reseted to original 0170 bios. However it does not work.
I've also tried cable select, but no success.
I think i have a bad M/O.
The manual says DMA cable and the cable says HDD cable.
Is DMA cable same as IDE cable and PATA cable. I am very confused.

The cables that came with the motherboard are DMA IDE PATA cables. I think all modern drive cables are DMA capable. So for now, ignore the IDE and DMA part. The PATA just means the cable is one of those 80 pin cables, the ribbon type. The motherboard should have come with one. Plug the blue end into the motherboard, and the other end into the DVD-ROM.

When I said reset the bios, I meant go into bios, and restore the defaults. You need to flash it to the latest bios version, which is 0309. Flash the bios, then try hooking up your new drive. If it doesn't work then, you may have problems. But I've never had an IDE channel go bad on me, so i don't know if the motherboard can survivie if that goes bad. Your motherboard is probably OK, you just need to get the settings correct.

Is your bios displays your IDE device (dvd drive)?
I can't find it in my bios setup screen. I see one recognized SATA HDD in SATA 1 slot.

I have Zalman 9500 LED fan power cable connecting to chas fans because Zalman fan power cable is 3pin and M/B connector is 4 pin. I don't think this has nothing to do with my DVD drive problem.

make sure you turn ON the Jmicron SATA/IDE controller. This controls the single IDE port on the board. I turned it off and the same thing happened to me.

As for the HSF the extra pin on the connector is for Qfan support. If you have a HSF with a 4pin connector you can adjust the Qfan speeds. Basically it allows the MB to determine the speed to run at based on temps.

I posted this in the Cooling forum but it's relevant to the P5B Deluxe motherboard so I'm reposting it here for the benefit of those who don't regularly check the other forum. I was thinking of replacing the Zalman CNPS9500 LED with a Thermalright Ultra-120 and Panaflow L1A fan. That's what promted my experiment.

Ok I cleaned my CNPS9500 with 91% Isopropyl and also the C2D IHS. Let them fully dry then installed them again. I made sure just to snug up the screws so they were tight and didn't move, but not crank them down at all. I lost 5c on the temps. That's good. I also dropped the AS5 on the IHS and pressed the HSF down to "spread" it. I only used a small amount. I'm happy so far. I would like to say that the C2D really heats up with increased voltage (to keep stable overclock). This is 100% Normal.

My specs are as follows.
Antec P180 (rear exhaust on high, intake on high, top exhaust on low)
Asus P5B Deluxe/Wifi
C2D e6400
2GB Corsair XMS2 6400 (rated 5-5-5-12)
Zalman CNPS9500 LED (on high)
Seasonic S12 600w PSU

At stock my system runs 42c after heating up to normal idle temps and loads around 50-55 (varies depending on task)
At my current overclock which is 400Mhz FSB(auto voltage), 8x CPU multi giving 3.2Ghz(at 1.34v according to Asus probe CPU-Z reports 1.334v), DDR2-800 Speeds at 5-5-5-12(2.1v)

This makes my idle temps on core temp to 50c at idle and about 60c at load(asus probe reports 49c). My MB temp reads as 34c at idle and when stressing the memory and such it goes to near 40c. My room temp is 80F atm. These are down from my original temps of 55c at idle and 70c at load.

Now I'm not sure whether it was cleaning the IHS and HSF and letting it dry, or the reseating did the trick. I'm happy with the results so far and as the AS5 Cures some I'm sure it may drop slightly even more.

I still believe that the P5B Deluxe is reporting temps on average 10c higher than the actual. I believe this because an identical system using a Gigabyte DS3 is getting about 10c lower temps at load. It could just be something that the BIOS updates can fix.

Just thought I'd let everyone know my findings. I'm gonna put the Thermalright Ultra-120 on hold for the time being. I'll see how this performs as time goes on.

Hi guys,

In my other thread, it seems as though my e6700 is running on single core. I've looked everywhere in the bios of my p5b and don't know if/where to set that. What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

Only if you flash the BIOS to a later version. Mine shipped with 30X, and I scored a 3dmark of 3800. With a quick BIOS flash, to 509, 3dmark went to 7400 with no other changes.

cmdrdredd,

Wow, we've got pretty close configs! I'm using a Scythe Ninja and Enermax PSU.

I've got questions regarding your memory settings, as I'm having trouble getting mine to work right.

Do you let SPD do your timings? If I do, it ends up at like 6/6/6/18 or something.

When I try and bump the voltage past 2.1, machine won't post.

In fact, when I overclock, under jumperless settings, if I try and do DDR2-800 for memory, it won't post either. Auto it goes to DDR2-4300. Any ideas? What BIOS are you using?

I have my new P5B Deluxe all setup and running great, but I have one last issue. I cannot figure out a way to boot to a DOS prompt and flash to the new bios.

1) My suspicion is that my floppy drive won't read ANY floppy. (broken floppy?)
2) I do not have a USB thumb drive.

Now what? I tried my CD bootdisk but when I get to the dos prompt it won't recognize ANY of my hard drives?
