OK total noob question here...

I'm picking up a P4P800 and I'm confused how all the RAM is rated. The Kingston HyperX seems to be liked around here, so I'm thinking about:

KHX3200A/256 (PC3200) CAS Latency 2 (2-3-2-6-1T)
or
KHX3200/256 (PC3200) CAS Latency 2 (2-2-2-6-1T)

The first one is $10 cheaper. Since the second digit is a "3", so does that mean that the RAM is that much slower?

Now this is where I get REALLY confused. The HyperX PC3500 which a lot of people use here is listed as (2-3-3-7-1T). Does that mean if I ran it DDR400 it would be SLOWER because it is (2-3-3-7-1T) instead of (2-2-2-6-1T)?

I guess I'm just confused about all the memory timings. Last time I bough RAM I didn't have to worry about any of this stuff.

Thanks!

The peformance difference is negligable between the two, but so is $10. The 865 chipset is very picky about RAM timings, especially RAS-to-CAS (I believe this is the one where the first stick is 3 second is 2) so even if RAM is spec to run at 2-2-2-6 it might not handle that.

the PC3500 ram has slower timings because it is rated to run at DDR 434 (217MHz) at 2-3-3-7 whereas the first two modules mentioned are 2-2-2-6 and 2-3-2-6 at DDR 400 (200MHz). Logically, this PC3500 should be able to run at DDR 400 (PC3200 spec) at 2-2-2-6 but there are no guarentees. I believe most RAM manufactuers use the same memory modules on their PC3200 and PC3500 and just clock it differently or test which sticks work at which speeds.

If you are going to overclock your memory beyond DDR 400 you should look at the PC3500 if it isn't much more.

Here are a few things to take a look at - which you may have already done:
Have you updated the BIOS on the M/B?
Are you using Windows XP with the newest service pack?
This maybe a royal pain the a.. , but have you tried starting all over with minimum devices (1 CD Drive, 1 Hard Drive, video Card) and new install of Windows?
I am not using RAID setup at all, but I believe I installed the VIA Raid driver, not the Intel. I do not have any other card on the PCI Bus.
I have done all of your recommendations but it still not working perfectly. Sometimes the connection light on the router will be on until the Windows XP screen boot up. Must be a driver conflict somewhere, just need to figure it out. Worst case scenario, I would just use my old SMC card.
I agree there is a conflict somewhere. The only other suggestion that I have is that you go to the BIOS settings and disable the functions that you are not using such as the VIA Raid, com ports, sound card options (you are using the on-board sound so you may want to leave this enabled) and parallel ports. Reboot and see if there is any improvement. Good luck

I never install the anti virus software that come in the Asus disc. This problem is pissing me off. I had to reboot the system or the SMC router or unplug the cable for a few seconds for the 3Com card to work. Called the tech support but they have no solutions at all. They said they recieved calls on the similar issue.

Thanks for the recommendations.

One more thing. I stopped having the 3Com problems when I upgraded to BIOS 1006 using the exe file. I noticed they took it off the d/l page. I had troubles running 1007 and 1008 wihtout installing 1006 first.

What ram will let me run @ 250mhz fsb without giving me video corruption with my Hercules 9800 Pro? I currently have 2 x 256 sticks of OCZ EL PC3700 Gold and while it runs fine @ 5:4 (192mhz @ 250 fsb :( ) it won'r run it at 1:1 without killing my grafix card. Any suggestions?
TIA :)

Anyone have any problems with an Audigy Platinum sound card? Sometimes when playing a game, the sound will crash and Ill have to restart to get it back. Or other times, the music will quit and it will start making weird high pitch noises for no reason. Not sure if its an issue with it and the board or just the card.

Last night, i finally O/C my board. Got it up to 3.12!, and it ran completely stable. Turned on turbo mode, and used the auto O/C and set it to 20%. My CPU went from running at 104F to 132f under a load. Did anyone ever reply to the question of what temps they are running at? Not sure if i should stop there or keep going, let me know, if 132f is too hot.

I need help I have just put my system together. I'm using default settings in bios which I have flashed to 1009 final. I have created an array with 2 WD 800jb drives. I have copied the via raid drivers for XP from the MB cd. Everytime XP setup accesses the floppy for the drive an error occurs and it will not load the driver and therefore setup can not continue. Please help has anyone else had this problem and what is the solution? Thanks

CJ:

Have you copied the txtsetup.oem and viaraid files on to the floppy too? I have not installed VIA RAID but I remember running into similar problems with my Promise Ultra 133 card because I had forgotten to copy the txtsetup.oem and another file. If there is a makedisk.exe utility on the CD, try using that to create the floppy disk and see if that works. If you have done all this, it could also be a bad floppy. Try checking the disk or create another disk.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I have a doubt about my HD SATA WD Raptor 36.7GB 10k. It is recognized by Asus P4P800 Deluxe like UDMA 5. I consulted the FAQ and I saw the folowing:

Q: Why is my serial ata HDD?(WD360GD (Raptor)) detected as UDMA5 under windows? (as it should be?at least UDMA6 or higher)? What can I do to fix this?

A: This is because ICH5 southbridge communicates with serial ata HDD through the similar protocol as its parallel ata connctors (supporting up to UDMA5 mode), which makes windows mis-detect it as running under UDMA5 mode. Microsoft will going to release a new patch to fix this issue soon.

I think it´s wrong because the HD is recognized like UDMA 5 during post up. Then it´s normal it be recognized in Windows like UDMA 5. Bios shows it like UDMA 6, but after saving Bios settings, my HD is recognized like UDMA 5 during post up. Then, I think we need a new Bios version to correct this issue and not only a patch from Microsoft. Does anybody have the same problem? Please, help me!!!

Thanks
Daniel

PS: I'm using 1010 Bios version. I have no PCI cards installed. I'm just using an ATI Radeon 7500 and sound and Lan onboard.

Be wary of the 1011 Beta BIOS.
1011 Problems

A number of people are having bad flashes from this BIOS. It has some really great o/c'ing features (extra memory ratios and auto o/c options), but I'm waiting to try it.

You have absolutely right my friend, I tried the latest 1011-2 and my mobo couldn't boot. Finally with the 6th time and pressing all the time right Alt+F2 my mobo boot, and I flashed the 1008 final bios. NO more beta bios for me anymore.

Running the p800 deluxe with
2*512 Kingston pc 3700
PIV 2.8
Asus Gf 5900 fx
2* Maxtor 120 gb S-ata Raid 0
Everything running @ stock speeds and settings for now

Without mentionable problems for a week. 3dmark, quake 3 and gunmetal run fine.
Only had 2 failed boots (failed to detect the HDD`s ) with the 1.05 bios. Did not have it after upgrading to BIOS 1.09.
Only had one reset/ crash I can not explain. (PC did nothing and just rebooted).

Only the Auto bios update fails me (gives busy asus servers). Tried to flash to the 1.10 bios (handdownloaded) but it refused. Flash worked fine with the 1.09 bios.

Try turning MAM off/disabled. Then try relaxing your memory timings and use manual timings instead of auto or spd. At 250 fsb 1:1 memory ratio, that OCZ 3700s should be able to do 2.5-4-4-8 timings easily. Also, if you are overclocking your video card, try using default timings first.

Ok, i am having a weird problem with my p4p800 deluxe. in my ati radeon control panel in the options and then the details section it says my agp is running at 0x. also in my 3dmark 03 score it says 0x. here is a link http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=1220370 here is my 3dmark 2001 score: http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=6934641 notice how low the cpu score is, 267 is wayyyy too low for a 3.06ghz

anyways, i have installed the intel chipset driver multiple times trying different versions and that did not change the agp setting, i have reformatted twice thinking maybe old drivers or something. i dont know what else to do? do i have a bad board or something? i even took out my pci card thinking maybe there was a irq conflict forcing my radeon 9800 to go to pci mode. here are my system specs:

2.4c@3.06ghz
2 x 512MB Corsair XMS PC3200 CL2
180gxp 180gb hd
120gb wd se hd
turtle beach santa cruz
lite on dvd rom 16x
pioneer dvr-105 dvd burner
tdk 24x cd burner
floppy
logitech mx duo cordless keyboard and mouse

Update on the 3Com problem.

Exchanged the board and received a replacement with Bios 1009 and Rev. 2 sticker on the board. Everything works fine with the same old components and configurations. The problem with the 3Com NIC, might be due to a defective board. Just exchange it and save yourself the headache.

You're about where you should be in 3dmark, so I'm not sure if it's simply a reporting issue. You might try Driver Cleaner to make sure you get rid of all the ATI junk between cat installs. Also, make sure you're absolutely stable (2 instances of Prime or something equivalent). Otherwise, everything seems to be working fine.

yep, totally stable. i ran 2 instances of prime 95 for 97 hours then decided to restart because i installed some updates. anyways, it annoys me that it says 0x and my cpu score is way lower thant comparable computers. i think my cpu score should be about 500-600. also, i saw other p4p800 users and theirs showed 8x so i dont really know whats up.

Cooljt1: I wish I could get such scores out of my 64MB GeForce3 Ti200! I am getting 3DMark2003 scores between 900 and 1000 with absolutely no overclocking of my MB or video card! Hope that is normal for this card. :( I have searched for benchmarks for this card but all I could find were 3DMark2001 scores!

So here's a question: What kind of Sandra bandwidth score are you guys getting on your P4P800?

List your proc, bus speed, mem-type, mem timings, and score.

Mine seems low, but maybe I expect too much:

2.4C @ 2.52
840 FSB (210Mhz) @ 1:1
HyperX PC3500
2-3-2-7
Sandra Buffered: 4300(ish)

Seriously, doesn't that seem like a low score? I've OC'd at SPD to 230 (couldn't POST at anything higher, but haven't tried real hard), and that boosts it to 4800. That's closer to where it ought to be now! Sandra's benchmark puts expected bandwidth for the 865PE at around 4600!

Advice is cool, but consider this a survey. Everybody respond! Lets get a feel for how the 865PE is performing real world.

I am looking into getting this mb (or ga-8knxp) and read that the Sata Raid only works with Windows XP. I have Win2K pro and want to save on buying a new OS.

1. Is this a requirement of the ICH5R or is it specific to this MB ?
2. Can I run a single Raptor hd for OS/Apps?

Thanks

Well after 2 weeks of experimenting I finally found the sweet spot for my setup.

P4P800 del BIOS 1010.
P4 2.8C @ 3.18 Stock intel cooler
227 FSB
1:1 memory ratio for 454mhz
2.85VDDR
1.55 Vcore
1.70 VAGP (ATI cards love voltage)
2 X 512 Corsair XMS PC 3500 C2 (not a matched duall ddr pair, carried over from my old 845PE board)
Memory settings 2.5 - 3 - 3 - 7 (CAS 2 actually scores less in Sandra, more errors in the RAM I guess)
2 X S-ATA 10,000 RPM Raptors in Raid 0
ATI 9700 Pro AIW
Sblive Value
3com built on Gigabyte LAN @ 100mb

Turbo enabled (I don't think this does a damn thing when you adjust your timings manually)
MAM enabled (does nothing after 200fsb)
Other important settings:
Spread spectrum DISABLED
everything else set to Auto (IE: Dram refresh etc..)

I know my limiting factor is my RAM becuase I can POST and boot into XP no problem at 3.5gig (250FSB)with my RAM 200mhz. I can run Sandra test's all day but I cannot run prime95 for more then 1min (I may be at the very edge with my CPU as well). I did alot of testing with Async and Sync RAM:FSB and the results are what I expected. I can get the same sandra scores at 3.4gig DDR 388 as 3.2gig at DDR 454 (about 5300). I decided to leave everything in Synchronous mode and drop it down 1 notch below peak. I am at 3.18Gig with my Ram running at 454mhz Dual channel Liner mode and I have run Prime95 for 18hrs along with 3dmark2001se in a constant loops at the same time. No issues. CPU temp max after this was 48c and it idles at 32c. I have a Chieftec case with 2 intake fans, 2 exhaust and one mounted in the clear side. I have an Enermax 430 watt power supply that is about 1year old.

Here are some benchmark scores @ 3.18 DDR 454
Sandra memory 5318
Sandra MIPS 9970
Sandra Hard drive 71,000ish
3dmark 2001 SE 17,300ish
3dmark 2003 5160ish
Everything Default, no software teaking at all, latest Intel chipset software, Latest Raid application accelerator, ATI Catalyst 3.7's. Win XP SP1 with all updates from windows update.

I'm now a happy Asus owner again. One day I may buy some DDR 500 and cross my fingers for 250FSB+ Stable in Sync mode but for now I'm broke :)

good luck
