Anyway my main point was 2.5Ghz is definitely doable.

I hear that some people have been having problems with the new ethernet drivers included in the newest Nvidia NF4 drivers... are you using them? Could always try rolling back to the ones Asus included on their CD

That is worth a try but I had them back with the cd drivers as well so I don't think thats it, or at least not all of it. Thanks for the suggestion though, always good to get some help.

Jayded,
I'm new to this posting business but this formum's been a great help so I thought I'd try offer some info in return. I have had the same error you have described several times, and without OC'ing at all. In my case it seems to be related to network connections (possibly drivers) as it only ever happens when I use the NVidia LAN port, and only when I go to certain areas of my home network. Until I can be stuffed re-installing things, my workaround has been to use the other LAN port and it runs fine. Perhaps try the new drivers or the other port?
Hope this may help.

I began having the same problem when I upgraded to the nForce Standalone Kit 6.39. The new audio driver that included also caused odd but not fatal problems with sound in EQII. I uninstalled them and reinstalled from the CD that came with the MB and everything is fine again :) I am using the 1003 BIOS, maybe the 1004 beta BIOS will address some of these issues if they are not driver-related.

a few questions for everyone:

1) I am reading conflicting info about whether or not the Zalman 7700 CPU cooler will fit this motherboard. I'm using PQI PC3200 Dual channel ram. I know the Zalman 7000 will fit, but i'd like to go as big as possible for extra cooling since this will be in my HTPC and I want to run it in siilent mode.

2) whta is the difference between the Zalman 7000A and 7000B? Zalman's website needs a comparison page...

I have PQI PC3200 dual in my A8N and the 7700Cu fits...lots of wires all over the place and there is a lot of stuff that has to be connetced before you put the fan in, but it fits nicely. Doesn't touch the vide card!

Problem, ok i was all set loving the board the set up and everything, then boom everything goes haywire. I had two eVGA 6600 GTs running in SLI with the 1003 BIOS set up. After about a week of stability i all of a sudden got the dreaded blue crash screen at boot up. For some reason my XP wasn't kicking in and loading, it would freeze for a second and then crash.

So, i would have to restart into safe mode with networking, everything would boot, i would resart my system and run windows normally, and it would boot fine. That worked for about three boot ups. Last night i tried the safe mode to restart method, but when i looked for the SLI drivers there were none present. Under hardware manager it displayed that they were operating normally but the icon in the taskbar was gone and if i went on the internet the page would load as if the drivers were not working.

I tried to uninstall the 71.02 (?) driver from 3d guru and installed the 66.93 drivers off the disk. Didn't work for both cards. So i uninstalled the drivers removed one card and started from scratch. Installed the 71 driver and now everything is stable again, but with only one card. I tried to install the second card, but now it won't load windows and freezed with the dreaded black screen.

Any ideas?

Hey all, I emailled ASUS about a few of the issues we are all experiencing, first is the email I sent ASUS then the reply. I got a reply pretty quickly, a little brief but as he says, they must have lots of issues to respond to.

------------------------------------------------------------------

[Problem Description]
Hi,

As I'm sure your aware there are a couple of issues that many users are experiencing with the A8N
SLI Deluxe. I wondered if you might be able to answer a couple of questions and whether any get be
resolved yet?

1) Maxtor Diamondmax10 Drives disappear in the BIOS seemingly randomly and it takes a BIOS
reflash and restart to get them back. Is there anything yet that can solve this or is it a wait for a new
BIOS?

2) Memory frequency at 1T Command Rate. At present it is still impossible to raise the frequency of
the memory above 240Mhz (DDR480) at a 1T Command Rate. Beyond this and the system becomes
very unstable at often leads to a corrupted hard disk. The RAM is more than capable of clocking at
300mhz DDR600 at a 1T command rate, but the board seem to have a problem supporting it at the
moment. The board certainly is advertised as an overclockers' board, so is a fix in the works for this?

3) NCQ: Some Maxtor and Western Digital drives supports NCQ, but there are problems with this
too. When enabled on the Maxtor Diamondmax drives within a couple of days it causes corruption to
the hard disk and a reformat/reinstallation of XP is needed. Is this being worked on too?

4) Beta BIOSes: Although not supported for obvious reasons (it's beta after all) no new BIOSes have
been released for the A8N SLI Deluxe since the 1004.001 at the end of January. Can we expect
more beta BIOSes in the future? If yes, would it be possible that the BIOSes can have what has been
changed listed with them. When the final 1003 was release, a text file explaining all the changes was
made available, can this not happen as we go along?

5) When can we expect the final 1004 Bios? :)

Sorry for all the questions, but ASUS has been pretty quiet about what is and what isn't being worked
on, I just hoped I could get a few answers.

If I can just point you to this thread on the Anandtech Forums:

http://forums.anandtech.com/categories.aspx?catid=29&entercat=y

this is probably the biggest thread about the A8N and tens of users post their problems and fixes all
the time, it would be a good source of current issues.

Thanks very much,

Adam Miles

[Reply]

Thank you for contacting ASUSTek UK Technical Support.

Due to the volume of emails we receive I will have to be kind of brief :

1) Updating the HDD firmware and using the latest BIOS should resolve this issue.

2) This board only officially supports up to DDR400 - the overclockability of the RAM is irrelevant if the board will not support it.

3) I havent heard of this issue, I will passto Taiwan for investigation.

4) Only final release BIOS get text files with fixes. This will ot be available for Beta BIOS. You can expect further BIOS revisions.

5) I'm afraid we don't have that information, it will be released when it is completed and ready to go final.

Thank you for the link I will be sure to investigate the issues we are not aware of.

Regards

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Updating the HDD firmware, interesting idea, i'll try that now (not that i knew it was possible).

Hmm, only supports up to DDR400? OK that's fair, but it is an overclockers board and was sold as such, even one of the older BIOSes overclocked to 201mhz just so the PCI bus locked. I think this is a bit of a cop out, but still do hope Taiwan are working on that issue.

Haven't heard of the NCQ problem... ok well, again Taiwan might know about it.

No hope of bios fix lists as we go alone either, but at least more BIOSs are coming. .. somewhen.

I may reply with a couple more questions, we'll see. I'll let you know what happens with this HDD firmware flashing.

.. my understanding from other posts on this site was that the recently released nforce4 drivers took care of the NCQ issue... I think these just came out about a week or so ago.. You can get them from the nVidia site..

Hey, I've been lurking on here a while, and was wondering if you can help me out... I understand the Asus' overclockability is pretty weak, but I'm having a lot of trouble with my memory timings.. I just cannot seem to set anything but auto without getting memtest errors. In fact any kind of tweaking with the FSB also causes errors and if I set the memory voltage below 2.8 , errors... my rig is pretty sound, I dont understand why I cant use the rated latency... here is my specs:

Athlon 3200 Winchester
1024mb Crucial Ballistix 3200 (apparently rated at 2-2-2-8 1T, but only works without error at auto, 2-3-3-3 2T, according to sandra)
580w Thermaltake Purepower PSU (rails are fine according to PC Probe)
Gigabyte GeForce 6600GT 128mb
2x 260gb DiamondMax 10 in RAID 0 on Nvidia Controller
Asus a8n-sli - BIOS Revision 1300 final, tried 1400b1

Basically everything in the Bios is set to auto, cuz anything outside of auto causes memtest errors.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

BSOD, generally with DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL

This is usually nothing to do with the board, but instead is a problem between A64 and SP2 (I think). It can usually be fixed by editing your boot.ini file:

Change the entry:
NoExecute=OptIn
to
Execute=OptIn

sdfak, I am using the same ram at 2-2-2-8 1T with no probs, at 2.8 volts.
Have you tried email to Crucial? They are pretty good at customer service-I think one of their reps posts on forums too.

runestone, thanks, could you tell if your getting that rating with auto settings?? also, if not, how you configured that in the bios, cuz I may be making a really silly error.. I emailed tech support though, thanks.

mofrack--Yep...I miss the SoundStorm, too. I am going to wait until nVidia comes out with the new version of SoundStorm (hopefully it's something we can get). There are no solutions that I know of right now that can even compare with what SoundStorm did--on the fly Dolby Digital output (through SPDIF and TOSLINK, too).

Does anyone know if the SATA ports from the SI 3114R will support single devices like SATA DVD writers...or will it only work in RAID mode?

Thanks Max,
I'd be glad to hear all your results with the MSI of DFI or any other board.

I appreciate all your input! Especially, if it is in English for us not so well versed individuals.
In other words, the ugly american! Thanks again.

like it really matters if memory is runnung at 250 or 300..... the difference is less than 1%, look it up

I'm pretty sure the Sil 3114 controller only supports RAID volumes. I could be wrong though.

Ok....
I ordered an ASUS A8N-SLI about a week ago. I have BIOS 1003 Final.
ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ Winnie
Antec 480W TrueBlue
eVGA 6800GT PCIe
OCZ EL Platinum 2x512MB(1GB) Dual PC3200
WD Raptor 74GB 10kRPM
WD 160GB SATA 7200RPM
NEC DVDRW Drive

Those are my specs....
I have had many problems with this motherboard.
-I get blue screens a lot, but mainly in games or when I exit them.
-I also have had 2 or 3 random restarts. And some restarts while trying to tweak with ntune. Benchmarks such as 3DMark05 and Aquamark have run fine.
-I can not seem to get my onboard sound to work either. I can only get 2CH working. I have a 5.1 setup and can only get 3 speakers to work, MAX.
-Another problem is my USB keyboard or any other usb device is not recognized in POST or BIOS....I have Legacy Enabled.

Have you guys had the same problems? If so....anyway I can fix any of these?

BTW, this morning when I checked my computer.(I had left it on all night to download something). It had a virtual memory error....are WD Raptors not good for staying on all night or what? I am just curious because I have had nothing but problems with the recent ASUS boards....

Please reply asap.

Thank you,
Justin

Look in advanced-dram setting in bios. It automatically detected the ram speed, except for 1T, which I had to choose.

OK, ran prime all night so i think i might be ok. D3 benchies ran fine as well.
Thanks for everyone here for th 101 different pointers i needed for this build.
My old rig is an athlonxp, so this was getting used to a new chipset, new cpu, and sli. Figuring out all the oc stuff was a challenge, thanks again for all the pointers.
I got a decent overclock of 2.3 from a 1.8 chip, using 255fsb with ht 3x.
Im getting some new hyperx ram, so hopefully i can try 1:1 instead of the 5:6 divider.
I can actually boot into 265, but prime errors right away Gonna play around with this more when the ram gets here, my goal is to hit 2.4

One rant real quick, why in the world would BFG sell a psu with their "power bundle" package of 2x 6800gt and a psu that does not meet the pwr requirements for the 2 cards running together. Didnt realize the psu was a dual rail until very late iin the game. Why in the world would they do this? I figured i'd be all set by buying a package together and not having to worry about the pwr or the cards. So far the unit is running ok, but i have a 20amp psu on standby.

So here's my new baby,

Zalman 7700-Cu heatsink
BFG 550watt dual rail 18a@12v
A8N-SLI Deluxe 1003 bios htt x 3
512MB Corsair Value Select DDR400 x2 running on 209mhzx2 auto timing
Thermaltake Tsunami case
Winchester 3000+ @ 2.3ghz 255fsb x 9 1.525v
BFG 6800gt x 2
WD 74g Raptor on nvidia sata3
NEC 3500a secondary pata

Yea I can't seem to get my 5.1 onboard to work either Kilasta. I just got Listen to Believe's AC3 5.1 headphones and have been trying to get them to work on the optical S/PDIF connection. I'm using the sound driver that came with the mobo and all I can get is 2 channels. The new nForce4 standalone driver from Nvidia's website wouldn't even output to the optical channel. I have also had problems with my USB keyboard not being recognized, but all I have to do is unplug it and replug it and it works fine. Anybody have a clue about the audio problems?

thanks for your input runestone, I actually figured it out.. quite purculiar to me.. basically, the memory was unstable at auto voltage, and unstable at 2.8v, but for some reason it works great , 2-2-2-5 at 2.7v , .. maybe they turned down the voltage requirements, 2.8 is kinda high for the default voltage, but strange how it wouldnt work on anything higher or lower than 2.7.

Glad to see you got it working. 2.8 was what Crucial said was default, so I set it there. Have you tried any benchmarks for the memory? Everest is one I use.

It's beta, but works well here.
