Im at 245 fsb on my A8N-SLI, is anyone alot higher than that? Im running my memory at 400@1:1, so my memory is actually at 490. Im using a 11x multipier. I just wanna know if people are getting into the 250+ range and have it be stable. I can get into windows fine at 250, but after playing games for alittle bit it will crash or something so i backed it down to 245. Anyone get higher????

I just wanna go to my memory's max, my cpu's max, not what the board bios is holding me to. I hope that the next bios or one soon after makes it so you can overclock as far as your COMPONENTS will let you......if that happens, then this is the best board ever. I had my problems, but i figured them out and this is my second board. This board was bought in december and it works great. Just stuck at 240 fsb, when in other systems ive built, the memory has gone all the way upto 288+ at 1:1, 1T, ect.......I know everyone hates this board, but i didnt let it beat me, i beat it and for doing so, i get to enjoy what i paid for..............except for the damn 240 fsb!

My brother has just built a system with this board and a x800 xt. It was running at 233 fsb max until the new bios 1003 was flashed. It now runs at 278 fsb stable for a few days now doing prime95 and 3dmark 2004.

His CPU is now running at 2503mhz with a 3000+. Not bad for a chip that runs default at 1800mhz!

I use the BIOS to overclock, don't trust doing it in Windows.

Thanks 'mikepro' for the tip with DEP, tried switching it off as you described, and by adding the parameter 'AlwaysOff' to the boot.ini (which turns DEP off completely), system still freezes.

As the next thing I ran an encode in Safe Mode and it worked !! No Freezing after closing the encoding app. This pointed me in the direction of drivers. So I have uninstalled the on-board Audio, switched it off in the bios and installed a cheap 5.1 PCI sound card (Terratec 5.1 fun) I had lying around. But my system still froze when closing the app after the completion of the encoding process.

I am now starting to think this could be the chipset drivers, so I am off to find some new ones....

Any more ideas will be welcomed.

Thorsson and jnmfox:

I'm having the same issues with overclocking ... not sure if it is just the luck of the draw or what but I can't get over 205 either. (using a winchester 3200+). Stable at stock and all but it would be nice to get a little extra something. Anyway, when oc'ing I'm using the bios, setting the memory to DDR400 and timings to auto. HT set to 4x. PCI lock activated. Setting to 210 FSB and I get a reboot going into windows. Setting to FSB 205 I can boot to windows but I get a spontaneous reboot running prime after about 40 minutes. Temps are just fine... not over 41C at load using asus probe. Anyway just thought I'd let u guys know that you aren't the only ones with pretty limited oc.

I was wondering what most people are running that have great running systems? SLI or single video card?

Exactly. I running two 6800 Ultra and when in not SLI mode the machine is rock solid. Its when I enable SLI I start getting stability problems. My guess it a driver issue and about it not yet mature. Heres to hoping we get some new stable drivers soon.

I have two machines with two ultras in each running in sli no issues. Go to nvidia and click on beta on the drivers page and load the 6.7.66 drivers which enable sli in 6800 ultras. Also I do a search on author squonk to find my post about switching to ultras for 6600 gt's for order i had to follow to get this to be seen properly. Its somewhere arround page 55 of this thread, maybee 53

I have three fans and not sure which ones are being read by "Asus PC Probe." The Zalman CPU fan is plugged into the CPU fan plug at the top of my A8N. Chaning the fan speed with the little extra attachment doesn't change any speeds. Which fan is the chipset and which one is the chassis fan? The fan that came with my JustPC case has a 3-pin plug and a molex. Thanks, AG

Anyone have a TV tuner in their A8N-SLI? I am trying to install a WinTV-PVR-250 from my old system, when I plug it in to the PCI slot, it won't post. It just loops my display. Video BIOS -> Blank Screen -> Video BIOS -> Blank Screen. I've tried other PCI slots, but same results. Any ideas?

I have had nothing but problems with this board. I own a computer store and have built thousands of systems. This has been a nightmare. I built a new system for myself and to check the new hardware out.
First off here is a list of my parts.
1.Asus A8N-SLI bios 1003.008 have tried beta 1004, 1002. you name it.
2. Power Supply CoolMax 450CT tried an Antec 480 made no difference.
3. AMD64 3000+ 90nm
4. Memory frst I bought Elxir 512 3200 useing the numbers on ASUS site. Wont run with 2 of them in dual mode crashes. Tried Samsung 256 3200 they work in dual mode. 512 works in single B1 only.
5. MSI 6600GT PCIx

First off booted up system blue screens lock us ect. Found board would lock up for hours and not boot at all then just as you give up it boots. Traced this to memory problem and running single 512 works for now. It seems if you lock up system it just wont unlock, strange.
Loaded windows XP Pro went to load Asus disk chipset drivers system locked up then crashed to reboot.
Had to reload system, this happened twice found I had to install SP2 before chipset drivers.
Marvel Lan and 1394 wereworking to start with then after I installed all the updates and tried a bios flash to 1003 they were gone for good. Now also no PCI cards are reconized no matter what I try or do. Reloaded Windows again and still no 1394 no Marverl Lan no PCI cards detcted at all.

Have now given up on this piece of crap and will order a Gigabyte. Reading in many forums a lot of people are having bad luck with this board, After the dealings I have had with Asus in the past my rule was not to use them, Guess I should have followed it.

reidman,

Sorry to hear youre having problems with your Asus. This board is not perfect to be sure, but you shouldnt call the board a piece of crap just because you cant get it working.

When you're an early adopter of ANY new chipset, you have to expect problems. I remember having issues with the 1st-gen Nforce 2s, as well as the original KT266 chipsets.

As far as seeing lots of posts about problems with the board: Gimme a break man. What forum have you been to, regardless of manufacturer, where everyone who has a GREAT working setup with no issues even bothers to post. The only people who posts are the ones who have trouble and want to get support. Duh.

I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything, just saying that I'm tired of people coming here with 1 post and calling the board crap because they cant get it working. What are you going to do if the Gigabyte or whatever brand NF4 SLI board you get does the same thing? Call it crap too?

Lastly, try a PSU that isnt crap (Coolmax PSU are piles of steaming turd, man) before blaming the board. Antecs arent perfect either. Try a PSU with 25amps or higher on the 12v rail.

/rant. That is all.

.............

You didn't mention what kind of disk you were using. I had similar problems after installing Win XP. I couldn't install nvidia drivers, system wouldn't shutdown properly or would reboot sporadically.

- I reformatted my Raid 0 disks I have Windows and my APPS on. Two separate partitions. (C and D)
- Flashed to the release level 1003 BIOS (Board came with 1002)
- Disabled Cool n' Quiet in BIOS
- Reinstalled Win XP on C
- As soon a I was able to boot Windows, I disabled command queueing in Device Manager for the NVIDIA CK804 IDE Controller containing my Raptor RAID drives for both the Primary and Secondary Channels.
- Installed nVidia drivers from the ASUS CD.
- Heard SP2 causes problems, so I'm sticking with SP1

Been solid as a rock ever since . (2 Days now. Knock on Wood.)
No OC'ing as of yet.
Still installing applications, but I'm writing this from the machine below while it is copying files from the old machine.

Just so you know that all these boards aren't crap.

AG, the chipset fan is the one reading 8000rpm.

I am running a Compro VideoMate TV card in my A8N with no problems (watching tv anyway!). For reference, I am also running a WinTV-PVR-350 on another nForce4 board (foxconn CK804K8MA) in my Media Center with no problems. If I get a chance today, I will swap the cards around and check it out. This is just a thought...Is your bios set to PCIe for Init Display First? I was wondering if it was set to PCI slot, whether the bios was confusing the card as a display device?

*edit*

I swapped over the cards, and the A8N booted fine with WinTV-PVR-350

*edit end*

An update to my problem....

I have updated to the latest nforce drivers available on stationdrivers, which has had the following effect.
I can now close the encoding application, without the system freezing! However, if I then try to open the encoded avi file, the system will freeze. If I restart the computer before trying to open the file, I have no problems. Arrrgh!!!

I am thinking about putting an old IDE drive into the system and trying to save the encoding file to the IDE disk. But I think I am clutching at straws here, and may just give up until some official drivers come from nvidia...

I want ANYONE who has a fsb overclock of OVER 240 with "1T" timmings to post and tell me he has over 245 fsb. I dont want people telling me they have 310 fsb but on a 2T, only 1T. Im betting all my money that no one has a stable 245+ fsb w/ 1T overclock.........nobody! Sucks too, itll be the reason why i go to MSI or more probable the Abit Fatil1ty nforce4 board......now thats gonna be a board!

Patience, my young apprentice, patience... ASUS shall post new and better bios for overclockers, and later there will be some modded bioses for dl, where you can boost Vcore and Vdimm some more. And fsb 300 MHz with 1T sounds exciting :)

Adventure, excitement, a Jedi craves not these things!

Thanks for the response.
Which slot did you place it in on the A8N? Do you have any other cards in any of the other slots? I have the BIOS set to PCIe first. I'm also running BIOS 1003 Final.

A8N SLI Deluxe BIOS 1003
Athlon 3200+
Crucial Ballistix PC4000
nVidia GeForce 6600GT
Maxtor DM 10 16Mb 250Gb (on nVidia SATA)

If I run PC Mark (full version) through the memory tests the machine ALWAYS stops responding half way through the Raw Write 4Mb test. However, all the other tests pass just fine - if you exclude the 4Mb Raw test you have no problems!
yes i've experienced this and it's basically a memory speed/timing issue - A8N-E won't allow your ram to max out it's known speed/timings that you are use to on other boards - bios still needs improvement

for now only way to work around this is lower your mem speed and/or loosen timings or up your vdimm

also 1004.01 beta bios flashed via asusupdate in windows helps alot

First post in this thread, thought i would add some notes...

For those having post issues, use 1003 Final BIOS (At least for me i never have any post probs anymore)

Audigy Sound Card probems... Move the audigy card to the middle PCI slot (worked for me system wouldn't boot with it in the last one at the bottom)

HD problems.. problems installing windows, corruption etc.. Don't install the Nvidia IDE Driver, use the windows one. (Can't confirm but never tried to use the Nvidia one, not sure if they work or not..)
Also if you have a raptor and are trying to install windows on it and have multiple drives installed on the machine, and when trying to find it in the windows setup.. where it gives you an error.. try this.. disable/unplug all other drives but the raptor.. install windows, then plug the rest all back in..

PSU issues (if running SLI think about getting a single rail PSU with 25+ amps on the 12v rail, thats if you are having problems)

Other problems.. Nic, or random BSOD's - Uninstall all Nvidia programs and drivers and anything else that came off the MB cd. Update windows to the latest service packs and updates. Then Reinstall all the drivers from the MB cd excluding the Nvidia IDE drivers! (Someone had mentioned this in another forum, i think if you install the mb drivers before windows is up to date there is posible conflicts cause the drivers are looking for up to date windows drivers when installing, and it gets fk'd up.. speculation on my part)

I am simply repeating things i've heard in this thread and other threads in this forum, and some a few other places. Correct me if there is anything that is incorrect. Just see alot of people with similar problems and i have been able to fix, and wanted to repost some info for them.

Also another issue for those trying to use ntune, and it gives you a message saying your PCI bus is being tracked by the HT bus blah.. blah..

Flash to 1003 final or any other higher build, which has a PCI clock speed lock setting in the bios.. alternatively or also you can set your HT Bus to 201 or higher to lock the PCI bus i believe.

This board is definately buggy, but with some research and time you can fix and get it running smooth.... I am not overclocking, waiting till others are having better luck, then i might give it a shot.

NVIDIA IDE works fine for me, i installed everything except the firewall and firewall management app
