I've seen posts here from people who bought an A8N SLI board from Newegg, odd that they didn't keep the link up for pre-orders.

I know this has already been mentioned, but im still not happy, is there a better list for compatible memory other than the QVL supplied by asus, as it is a bit limited. Im building a new system around this mobo and have no idea when it comes to memory, other than 2x512mb would be a good thing. I might just get 1 to start off with. Any help would be appreciated

Hi guys

Ordered a new computer earlier this month, mostly because I want more speed and I want a more quiet solution.

To my questions:
* Others have asked this before but haven't gotten that many answers. Is the sound of the chipset annoying in any way? I'm planning to sleep 2-3 meters from the computer and I'm wondering if I will have to find another solution for this, first thing I do.

* Same question but about the Gigabyte GeForce 6600gt instead, is the fan loud?

* Have anyone here tried to install Windows XP 64bit on this mobo with only S-ata disks, if so, were there any problems?

Hmm, can't wait until new year now, I'm supposed to get the mobo somewhere around there, just hope the Cpu won't keep me waiting longer than that

I'm having trouble finding PCI-E 6800Gt's to buy. Should I go with 6600GTX2 because they are available? Any idea of the performance difference?

Thanks

Well it looks like the max o/c (prime95 stable) for my CPU is 2528mhz. I can run all day @ 2601 and run benchies and play games, But it errors out in prime95. I am very happy with these results, and my target all along was 2500 for this chip. Who wouldn't be happy with 25%+ overclock!

I have found a couple of items worth noting.

1. It appears the max. FSB is 290.6. You can set it higher in the bios. But when you boot it up and run
CPU-Z and AI booster, thet both show FSB 290.6

2. AI booster doesn't read FSB over 270, therefore if your FSB is >270 you can't change it within windows.
you have to reboot and change it in bios.

3. The manual CPU voltage adjustment is apparently limited to 1.52 for winchester. You can set the voltage higher in bios ei.. 1.5375 1.550 1.575 1.585 I even tested 1.60. But when you boot up and check CPU-Z and AI booster, they both show 1.52.

Now that I've found my best CPU overclock, its time to move on to optimizing my RAM.

O.K....
First off, if any set-up is too loud for you there is always an alternative cooling solution. Second, the gt 6800 ultra pci-e will at higher resolutions kick the crap out of the the gt 6600 without a doubt, do you want to invest $800 to $1,000 in video cards when they(gt 6800 ultras) become available? Third, there is now a new memory divider table to consider...as in A64. Remember not everyone can afford 1t memory, thus the dividers. There are a lot of combinations to try before you hit the top end your system can achieve...lots of luck...

so far, i can't hear anything in my computer over the sound of the 120mm fan in the rear of my tower. I put my ear to the 6600GT, and couldn't hear much, same for the northbridge fan. I wouldn't worry about it too much. As for video recommendations, i don't think you can beat a 6600GT. Until prices on 6800GT/Ultras come down, it's just not cost-effective. Also, with ATI's $300 X800XL, nvidia's likely gonna be dropping 6800GT prices in the near future, so if you spend $180 on a 6600GT now, you can buy a 6800GT for $200 less than it costs now in a few months, sell the 6600GT for like $125-150, and be in the black. Anyways, i love my 6600GT, it's single slot, not too loud, has dual DVI (XFX version), and can apparently overclock really well (i'm waiting to run ntune until i get all my new drivers and stuff and get my system setup the way i want it). Oh, and its DIRT CHEAP!!!!!!

On a side note, is there something about the firewall or something that makes it hard to get online? I've been trying to get online for a while, through cable, and can't get it working. I've disabled all firewalls and stuff, but to no avail. I officially stumped the roadrunner tech, so i guess we'll see what happens. Grr, i feel like such a tool, i can build my own damn computer but can't get on the internet.....lol.....

zalman told me the 7700 works, and i think that's bigger than the XP-120, so you should be fine. Still, i'd hate to throw away 50-60 bucks on something without confirmation it will work. When in doubt, just buy the retail kit and wait till you know for sure. My retail 3000+ cost $154 from newegg, and the cheapest OEM price i found was $151, so i think $3 is worth it to be able to relax and wait till someone else has figured out if it will work.

I was told that this small order of retrofitted units will be identical to a 5K unit production run in February. Price will be about the same then or maybe $10 cheaper...

Caveman thanks for the tip. I am going to order the dual 6 pin version as soon as they open up this AM. How long did it take them to ship it to you?

ShoNuff, I can't remember exactly, but it was fast... The units were ready to ship last Monday and I think it was here Thursday... Just use whatever shipping option you think is best...

Are the two 6 pin connections on the same rail or do the both come out of the PSU seperately? It would be pretty cool to have 2 x 6 pin connectors on 1 set of heavy gauge wire. Also, is it 24 pin ATX?

Wow. That's great news. This announcement of the 3D1's should also cause prices to drop on the 6800 cards since they will now be second fiddle.

That is, as soon as there is supply of the 6800 cards......

Can someone explain why this board has two network adaptors and what is a practical use for them? Also, what are the differences between the two? Thanks a bunch.

Gobucks, if you are using XP SP2, uninstall it and try your internet connection again, especially if you are using wireless. I had to do that. A lot of nics do not have drivers yet that are compatible with SP2.
