I heard recently that Reuben is like....3rd overall in record sales over all previous participants.

As far as Idol winners go, Ruben and Fantasia are 3rd and 4th in record sales, respectively. As far as Idol contestants go, they're 5th and 6th, respectively (with Daughtry and Clay Aiken above them). So, out of 8 winners, there are only 2 above Ruben and Fantasia, who were likely at the bottom of looks and marketability. I wouldn't exactly call that a correlation.

If the correlation between looks and marketability were there, then Kris Allen's first album should've slaughtered many of the other winners' album sales; however, it's at the absolute bottom of all Idol winner's sales with a measely 295,000 sales, and 12 non-Idol-winners (even ugly ones) have sold more albums than he has.

rigging? it's a popularity contest more so than a singing contest. the best singer doesn't always win.

that said, after hearing Joss Stone sing last night I think Crystal could run with the big dogs like her quite easily.
 
That all star band doing Stairway to Heaven was perhaps the biggest trainwreck I have witnessed in some time. All star bands never work out, but layer on the most overrated song of all time and some really wanky vocals from someone very much out of her comfort zone :facepalm:

They always have - they can't cobble it together in time apparently. I've always looked to see if I could spot the fake judges sitting there (or sometimes none,) and then for big differences in the performances.

I am on the list for AI tickets and the last two seasons they've only offered dress rehearsals, which I keep declining. I want the real thing!
 
One of the few times I've watched the performance episdoe this week, and oh god it's another lambert situation going on. The rest have a few moments, but by and large they could have just voted everyone but cyrstal off last night and saved us the time.


And WTF was going on with the sound last night. Normally on live performances líke that the music kinda drowns out the vocals, but all the vocals came through almost taped audio clear and you could barely hear any of the instruments.

most of the guest performances are synced. Several of the results show performances where the contestants sing as a group are very obviously synced to the point of laughability.

Sometimes, I even get the feeling that they have weaker contestants (like Tim or Aaron), lip syncing over soundboards of much better voices (Lee or Casey) 😀

The audio on the Black Eyed Peas was SO bad.

2 of those weeks were pretty good for Tim, though. Those two weeks for Tim, imo, were much better than the 0 good weeks that Aaron has had.

Katie should definitely still be in it, though, simply b/c of voice.

Anyone think that VFTW moved over to Aaron after Tim's supposed improvement 2 weeks in a row? :hmm:

Neither of them are sexy in my eyes...but then they're not nearly as successful as say Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson or Chris Daughtry. All 3 of those singers definitely are considered attractive and very marketable to AI's target market. I'm not saying Crystal's ugly or anything...yeah, she's cute in a different kind of way, but I don't know if her image will appeal to a wide audience. She'll just have her niche fans and I suspect will eventually fade away like some of the other Idols of the past.

As for yesterday's celebrity performances - WTF was the deal with the Black Eyed Peas? They sounded TERRIBLE! Definitely no lip syncing going on there. The sound guy should be fired (or the BEP should have brought their own). I honestly couldn't stand listening to them live. I sure hope their concerts don't sound like this...

I guess I just don't get Adam Lambert. I seriously don't understand why he's such a favorite last year (I also didn't think Kris Allen is *that* special, but that besides the point). The screaming thing he got going when he doesn't know what else to do is simply far away from what I would call 'music', not to mention 'good music'. Sure, Lambert had his moments, but Andrew Garcia had his 'Straight Up' moment too, and in the end we found out that he's really just average.

Lee Dewyze, just for comparison, is like the new and super improved Kris Allen 2.0. More and more comfortable performance, creative arrangements, and he seems to know what he's doing (song choice, etc). He might actually win this thing.

I agree with the rest of your post though. Crystal is so much better than everyone else at this point.

well, Adam was never just average. He blew everyone else off the stage rather consistently. Love him or hate him, it's tough to not recognize his talent. He wasn't always screaming, either. I think he was rarely out of control or overboard with his vocals. His performances always had a very deliberate, rehearsed quality to them.

From what I've seen of his current stuff, well...he's just a big talented freak. I've no real love for his music, I guess, but he's damn talented. I still think it will be some time before anyone tops his "Tracks of my Tears" performance during Motown week. Zero screaming in that, so for those that erroneously think that screaming is the limit to his skills, should check it out if you've forgotten. It's the best single performance that I've seen on that show.

My personal favorite was Mad World. I was on Team Lambert all of last season.
 
I don't think he's a 'hack'. I guess I exaggerated a bit when I compared him with Garcia's one single moment of coolness. He's definitely got talent, no doubt about that. I just didn't see why most everyone think he's way above and beyond everybody else.

I agree with you, that's a very good and memorable performance from him.

Aaron has better pipes, no doubt, but he's a so damn shy that it's annoying. You can see he's still very uncomfortable at times on stage. It's a turn off. Tim got better... he had a "Plain White T's" kinda thing going. Not really what I like to hear, but other singers have made it work.

I would take Katie over Tim also. Tim got the emo hair going, starting singing about love, and that big smile of his, all surely got the teenbop girls voting for him.
