Joker was only using 1.3v to get his 1700 to 3.9GHz. I don't know what type of voltage he was using to get his 1800X to 3.9GHz, but if it was only 1.3v, then he still has 500mv on the table to be considered in the 'Safe Zone" I'd be giving the chip 1.4v under a decent cooling solution. 1.45v shouldn't be a long-term voltage per AMD.
 
After browsing quite a few english language reviews one thing is clear the quality of tech journalism as a whole is way below where it was when Anand was a more CPU focused site. Take a "leader" like PCPER who tested three whole games for this launch. Seriously just three.

I'd keep in mind the timing of this launch (MWC, GDC) and the numerous retesting and BIOS updates these reviewers had to do before being too hard on them.
 
Overall, it looks like the 1700X and 1800X don't make too much sense to buy over the 1700 if you want to go with a RyZen 8C chip.
Yeah, Ryzen 1700 is where the money is at.

Because if you think about it. You can bin a chip 2 different ways. Clocking wise (what folks talk about usually) and leakage wise. Leakage wise is usually for Server and Mobile. To make a 8c/16t consume 65-75w at load (cant tell, havent see a review of power consumption of 1700, that is why i take 10 more watts just because), is impressive and points to a low leakage chip. THat is also binned, and low leakage responds better to air/AIO rather than extreme cooling. And you get a stock cooler too.
 
That started before the reviews hit and I guarantee it's not a result of them. With the volatility of this stock, if it was tanking due to Ryzen looking bad, you would see it down 20+% now, not 3%.

It's probably just automatic "sell on the news", or algorithmic (markets as a whole are slightly down at the moment). As far as I'm concerned, modern stock trading is witchcraft. 😛 Let me just play with my shiny new toys and not worry about the markets.

Gaming benchmarks on Ryzen are a critical mess. However it is worth noting here again, that these are very much benchmarks, and not actual gameplay. What we have come to find is that AMD has an issue with Ryzen at 1080P and seemingly lower resolutions when gaming, which is odd. I have talked to Ryan over at PCPer.com a few times during testing, and he has covered real world desktop gaming in-depth. I highly suggest giving it a read. I am not going to say much more about gaming here since I have little experience on that, but assuredly, there are some Ryzen problems when it comes to "low resolution" gaming. Of course, we can certaily argue and say that it is unlikely that lots of folks building a Ryzen system will actually be using such a "low" resolution display. The issues however seem to not affect Ryzen gameplay once the resolution scales up to 1400p/1600p/4K.

Seems most popular sites are happy to publish half arsed web reviews for clicks while they promote equally shoddy youtube videos for more revenue. Would be nice to see some of these leaders invest that revenue in actually testing again. Thankfully if we use google translate we can still find real tech sites like Hardweare.fr who actually spend time testing and documenting bugs. /rant

SMT bug is a real killer. AMD may be more competitive in gaming by the time the 1600X is launched. It should be a better CPU for current gaming workloads and hopefully the bugs will be fixed so we can see some real competition.

We still dont know if its a hardware bug or a OS scheduler one. We have to think on MT the SMT yield of Ryzen is even higher than Intel's. That shows a different working scheme. Today Microsoft only knows 1 SMT to optimize the scheduler to, and that is Intel's. We have to wait. I can't say yet if there is a SMT related errata on the design on production cpus. No one can but AMD.

Agreed. I'm tempted to grab a B350 and the 1700 for my Server (running multiple VMs and Plex Server) Looks like it would be the perfect use case. Hell, if i can under-clock the CPU drop the voltage a little it should be sipping power. Hmmm... the R5 1600 looks promising at $229 as well. It's amazing to now have some decent options at competitive prices.

Also seen an SC where some reviewer disabled Performance Bias. This is a good practice. But shows not everyone is testing the same.
 
Guess I won't need to upgrade after all, seeing how poorly ryzen runs modern games. My piledriver will continue to work hand in hand with my r9 380 nicely until kingdom comes or until I upgrade to a better gpu, whichever comes first.
However, NO MORE overpriced Intel, this is a blessing.
 
I cancelled my preorder, till performance issues gets sorted out, I really wanted to build a Ryzen 8C system, but my main desktop usage is for gaming

So just as i forecasted the trolls came out to party over 1080p gaming.
There seems to be a clear latency issue, also an optimization issue, i suspect both of these issues are to blame for poor 1080p gaming.
Does that bother me? Not in the slightesas i would never game at 1080p, certainly if your spending 350-1000$ on a cpu just to game at 1080p then i cant help you.
Fantastic processor at a fantastic price. 🙂

I'm going to benchmark my fx8350 + r9 390 8gb vs my temporary Ryzen R7 1800x + R9 290 4gb system. Real world gaming scenarios of 1920x1080, 2560x1080 and 2560x1440. And then probably streaming performance too.
