Either a 2.4 or 2.6 will suit you well and isn't too expensive. Are you overclocking? IF you plan on doing any of this, you may want to look at the IC7-MAX3 board as it offers better cooling options and more SATA channels over the IC7-G. For not OCing, then the IC7-G is fine, BUT make sure you ask the vendor if the board they are sending you has the newer revised, ABIT Northbridge Heatsink/Fan combo. It's a big improvement over the craptacular and loud HSF's that came with the 1st production boards.

If you NOT going to overclock, then I would advise against getting any PC4000 ram. It's rather expensive and also your paying a premium to run the ram at slow timings. If your not going to OC, just get some good Corsair or HyperX PC3200 or 3500 RAM. The 9700 AIW is a sweet card man, I'm jealous. Do you already have the 9700AIW, if not take a look at the 9800AIW if it isn't that much more expensive; but you can't go wrong with either. If you haven't gotten the sound card, just get the newer Audigy 2 ZS Platinum that came out a few weeks ago. Is that 'Sony RW' a DVD-RW drive, or another CDRW drive? Doesn't make sense to have two CD-RW drives; maybe get a Lite-On DVD-Rom drive from new egg for $35 I believe. OR do you have a DVD-RW drive?

Thanks for the info, this is actually the components I purchased (and assembled) with the idea of OCing after I get the array to boot consistantly. I believe the Sony is the DRU510A DVD-RW and the LiteOn is the LTR-52327S 52X.24X.52X

I got this rig up to a 260MHz bus and 3.3+GHz but I backed it back down out of fear.
Looked like it coulda gone higher.

I just updated to the 17 from 15 and now I can't find where to turn off the Sil RAID thing in the boot. I don't use RAID and this thing keeps poping up and XP keeps trying to install drivers for it. How do I make this menu and stuff go away.

bout a month ago I bought an abit IC7 and a P4 2.4C. Put it all together, but had a little problem with my wireless nic, a d-link airplus 802.11b. When I first install the card as per directions, i get little freezes for about 3-5 seconds and then it will unfreeze for 3-5 seconds and keep repeating the process until I have gone into the network program and gotten it to connect up to my router. Once its connected its fine, but any little pause in the connection will cause a little freeze. I didnt think this was a problem until I tryed playing a game online, after a while eventually playing online I would I assume get one of these freezes because my computer hard lock and sometimes just crashes to a reboot. I then decided it must be my card, which ran fine in my old box I might add, so I went and got a netgear usb wireless. Well, same problem, so now I am sure its just that I got a bunk board. I sent it back and got it back today. With a full reinstall of XP I get it again. I had tried every driver for it that I could, new board bios, all windows updates, nothing helped. I have tried any bios setting that has to do with pci stuff but thats not helping either. I have looked through the XP event viewer and only found this error:

The COM+ Event System failed to fire the ConnectionMade method on subscription {4515EE1C-7D96-4424-B0AF-D653A4E89199}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}-{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}. The subscriber returned HRESULT 80004001.

Not sure if that is related or not. I am now assuming its and XP problem maybe? But i was running XP with my old board and this card just fine I have yet to try wired networking as I dont have a cable long enough to reach my router but I will maybe try tomorrow.

under device manager i just realized there was always a usb controller that wasnt installed. Under installed usb stuff I have a generic usb hub, 4 Intel usb controllers a usb composite device and 4 usb root hubs listed. Could this uninstallled usb hub be my problem? I have a viewsonic keyboard installed that has a usb hub in it, is this my prob?

Hey guys i know this has been answered plenty of times in this forum, considering how long it is, and i did read through some of it but my eyes cant take much more. I just built my new machine, ic7-g p4@3.0,800,corsair pc3700xms ram, and need some help on oc'en. Never really messed with this before. I got plenty of cooling, zalman 7000cnps a-cu, 2, 120mm fans, and 2 80mm. I want a nice and stable machine. What do you guys think i could get up to without having any kind of problems and would notice the difference in speeds? Thanks for the help.

Oh yea another quick question. I installed 3dmark2001 and when i attempt to run it it says that i need directx 8.2 or some crazy thing to run it, when im running xp, which has version 9 with it i think, and i even updated to 9.2b. I ran the dxdiagnostics and says i have 9.2b. Anyone have any ideas what causes that?

You should be able to to go to 3.5 (233FSB maybe a little more) at a 1:1 ratio with that ram. Thats about as far as I would care to guess that the chip will run stable on air. Its pretty much luck of the draw.

For 3DMark 2001 SE you need the patch to run it on DX9.

HUBES: Just a note: when you post in here it would be helpful for others to comment if you list your major components and their stock values, and then what you have OCed to now, or are trying to get. Like what CPU you have, Vid card, amount of ram, what is your Vcore/Vdimm settings, etc

As for your ram, is it at the stock voltage of 2.6Vdimm? To get any better timings, you really need to up the Vdimm a bit, to get my Kingston HyperX PC3500 512MB X2 to run @ 2-2-2-5 timings, I had to up the Vdimm to the max of 2.8V. You should give this a shot first, but keep in mind that the tighter the timings you go for, this will limit your OC level a bit. I have my P4c 2.4 OCed to 3.06Ghz and I'm sure I could get at least 3.2Ghz overclock, but I would rather have the tightest possible timings for the ram, than the extra 140Mhz of CPU speed. For your ram, perhaps you can find others with your exact modules in ATF and ask whats the best timings they have gotten. If you turn ALL the GAT settings to AUTO and raise the Vdimm to 2.8 I think you could probably get 2-3-2-5 timings if your at stock. And if your overclocking and use the 5:4 divider, you can possibly get the same timings but at the cost of a few CPU Mhz potential. I can't really say about the 1:1 divider as I haven't had any luck with overclocking at that level.

With my ram timings I am running with a 5:4 FSB @ 255Mhz and stock Vcore CPU voltage. I have a Radeon 9700 Non-Pro @ stock speeds and I get 15988 3DMark2001SE and 4480 3DMark2003 points. It's odd as the 2001 scores correlate to a 9700 PRO version, but I guess the 2003 score is what it should be.

Well i raised my vdimm from 2.7 to 2.8, changed my latency to 2.5-6-3-3 and my comp wouldnt boot up. Was at 225fsb 1:1. Clock was on auto. Each time i tried to mess with the latency my computer wouldnt boot up. I dont know whats goin on. Anyone got any ideas.
When you guys say like 2-3-3-6 its goin from cas,apd,r,c right? I cant even get my ram down to some of those numbers? Does it vary for each ram the latency you get. I would assume so... I tried what you said and changed the voltage from 2.7 to 2.8 but still had the same luck.

It really is luck of the draw. I have the IC7-G, a 3.0 P4C, and 1G Corsair XMS3500. My RAM timings are at 2-3-3-7 with CPU to RAM at 1:1, and a rockstable OC of 3330MHz (222MHz FSB). That gives me a 3DMark2001 score of 20K. I can get the FSB up to 230MHz (CPU at 3450MHz) but that's flaky at best, and "only" a 3DMark2001 score of 20.2K. Completely std. settings my score is 18K.

I loosened up my RAM timings to get there, and wanted optimal GAT.

It is a rockin' system, and with Raid0 HDs, and an ATi 9800 Pro to go with it, I can't complain. Even if the other kids have better scores and higher MHz.

alright i raised my voltage up to 2.8, kept fsb at 228, changed my latency from by spd to 3-7-3-3, from 3-7-4-4, and got a little higher of a score, It only went up 300 points but i guess its better then nothin. cpu temp is at 35.5 and system at 28. Which isnt to bad i suppose. I think im gonna try to raise up that fsb some more and see what happens. What is your guys input?

I have found that it is worth keeping GAT set optimally, and the CPU:RAM set to 1:1, perhaps sacrifising a little FSB. The bottleneck is no longer your CPU, but rather how it all works together.

Well the gat is all on auto. Should i keep it that way or fiddle with some things? And it is on 1:1 i dont think i wanna change that. Do you think i should raise my fsb up any higher the 228?

You should be able to set it to F1 (I think that's the highest) and not Auto. You will see a difference in your games etc. Also, monitor you temps at anything higher than 225MHz. You don't want to loose that major download because the PC crashes after 8 hours. Run Prime95, or one of those many stability checkers, for at least 12 hours before you consider the PC stable. SiSoft Sandra 2004 also has a good burn-in funtionality.

Don't be too dissapointed if you can't OC like so many others. I think the Corsair XMS3500/3700 limits our OCing a bit, I know that's the only thing I regret buying. Now, the Corsair 1GB DDR XMS4000 Pro TwinX (2x512MB) CAS3, that looks like a winner!

Also, with air-cooling there are limitations. The 3.0 P4C is not the best for high OCing. You get a lot more percentage OCing with the 2.4s. However, we start out so much faster

Tried to set it to F1, bios would not boot up. So i just kept all my latency settings by spd, gac on all auto, raised my sdram voltage to 2.7, and my fsb to 230. Im gonna see how this goes. My temps right now are 33 cpu 24 system.

HUBES, one thing I could suggest is to bump up your Vdimm to 2.8 from 2.7. I found that I could even get better timings on my HyperX when overclocking, unless I went on up to 2.8Vdimm. Have you tried raising your Vcore, a bit? And using any of the GAT settings when your overclocking only seems to leed to failure. And while this is just my opinion, but using any of the GAT settings doesn't really make any noticeable improvement, especially when you've just gained a good speed boost from OCing. I learned after a while, that when you get past 3Ghz or so, just chasing higher 3DMark scores by trying to use the GAT features, is a self-defeating endeavor.
