At this point, throughout all of your other replacements with the ram and new CPU, all signs would seem to point to your MB. It's the last thing left that would be causing the Memtest failures, and would really be explaining your extremely limiting FSB overclock. Kev, I know you have other PC's there, can you try to Memtest your HyperX ram in your other PC's if they have DDR. Hopefully they can take it with the DDR433 spec. Nevertheless, my money is now on a bum motherboard.

BTW, I know I've mentioned a few things in the past that did not pan out, but I've never seen someone have so many dead ends. We should take up a collection and hier a priest to come out to your place and exorcise your rig.

I hate to do an RMA on the board but I think I have no choice. How long does it take? good thing I saved my crappy NB HSF.....

I'm holding out hope that my memtest that's running on the new stick doesn't fail....

I only do minor overclocking, I suppect for large overclockers it would be an issue. By the by does the new setup seem quiter? As you may guess I am interested in a quite machine.

"Got my northbridge cooler replacement from ExcaliberPC today. Went on OK, darn tight to the zalman hunk-O-copper, and not as tight fitting as the stock setup, but it's there."

You could probibly get away with just the big fan over the zalman huffing along. The replacement from excalaber was dirt cheap though, and it's as quiet or more so than the original. Between the four drives, two fo them 10K raptors, the rear fan running full tilt, the over zalman and the front thermaly controler 120mm, I honestly can't tell about the noise too much. Once I get stable, THEN I'll look into quiet..

this board is drving me nuts. anything above 230 FSb fails!

it doesnt matter what memory settings or any other BIOS settings for that matter. Anything about 230fsb give me prime errors. any ideas before I try another IC7 board?

Yes, it is probably your cpu limit. Try raising vcore slightly see if ti helps.
Also, try playing with GAT setings see if that helps.

Mroleg I think he's already done all of that and then some. You might want to read back a few pages to the beginning of Kev's first post. I really feel bad for kev. He's seen it all, every road block that he could possibly hit he has unfortunately.

yeah I've been in some bad luck with this board. I even got a bad RMA back from Kingston.
in any case I loaded failsafe settings and wetn up to 230 fsb, nbs800, 5:4 ratio fixed agp/pci at 66/33 and default oltages. I ran prime95 for 8 hours and then it failed. what I suspect happend ther was rthe vdimm voltage since it was at 2.6 I bumped up the Vdimm and an running prime again... I will RMA this baord on Monday if I can't get it going , maybe the board has a flaw

Did you test your cpu on another system and it was stable above 230FSB? If you board runs Prime95 fine at default 200fsb, I don't think it's your motherboard.

can't test in on any other board. my onle other s478 is a p4b266. AlsIO this is my second CPU that is exhibiting the sambe behavior. My 2.4c would not do anythinf above 230fsb.

Ok, I'm finally stumped. I have RMA'd my IC7 motherboard, my ram three times (I have Kingston HyperX 3200), and flashed my BIOS. The problem is that I always get an error on test #5 on Memtest86, and Prime95 fails after four iterations...about 3mins. I have RMA'd everything except for the video card (probably not the problem because of memtest errors) and the CPU. The CPU may be the problem but the memtest errors I get tell me differently. Or not? Anyway, on each stick of memory I RMA'd I got the same errors. Also the new motherboard I got from Newegg looks a lot different than the one I had before. It looks like it had its NB heatsink changed out. Does Newegg give out refurbs for RMAs? Erg, this is really annoying. Could it be the CPU? If so I don't think I can afford another RMA. I have shipped things out way too much. Thanks in advance.

System Specs:
Abit IC7
P4 2.4C
512MB Kingston HyperX 3200
MSI TI4800SE
80 gig IBM HD
Netgear LAN card

Do you have something mis-configured in Memtest? I recall that while I was messing around with the settings in memtest, I think it was the std-820 setting or something, It would fail every second. I don't know if this would help, or not; but just make sure all of your settings are right.

Good luck.

Why would Prime 95 fail after the fourth iteration then? Maybe there's a problem in memtest. I'll look into that, but it seems that it may be something else.

LOL, increasing the voltage by .5 worked. Thanks. I never thought of it before because I never thought I would have to increase the voltage when at stock speeds to get it stable. Oh well, I'll know in the future.

I don't think applying voltage out of spec would help here. It would just mask the problem, if it does exist to begin with. It your RAM cant pass Memtest at stock speed/timings/voltage, then changing any of those 3 parameters will just fool you into thinking you have a good stick if somehow it does pass. At least with Kingston they are super cool about RMA's. I had to return a stick, and they shipped me a stick overnight and they paid for the shipping.

Good Luck, but you should try to memtest in each slot to rule out the possibility that it's not a MB issue.

unless your motherboard over or undervolts, then you have to take that into consideration.

This week I was at a computer show and noted that the ASUS NB coolers looked that would fit (clip right on) on the Abit Board IC7. The ASUS NB coolers are larger that ABIT's and do not use a fan. Just wondering if anyone has tried it and if it would fit with a Z-7000 CPU cooler on a ABIT IC7-G MB.

quick poll, you guys wit hthe nice OC's what wattage PSU are you using and also what brand? I think my problem might be related to the PSU , I have an ANtec true 480 but I think the ATI AIW 9700 pro eats a lot of pwoer. Thinking about gettinh a Antec 550...

I am doing just fine with TT PurePower 420 W. And I have prommy, Radeon 9800 Pro and oc'ed to 275 Mhz FSB. Haven't had any problems with power yet. I think 550 is an over kill.

KEVMAN: I'm running a 2.4c @ 3060Mhz w/ 255FSB. I have a Atnec True Power 430. But I really think that the full gig of ram is what is holding me back, as I have heard the same from a few fellow ATF'ers who have a IC7 and 1GB of ram. BTW, I just took a look at your system components for your IC7 rig, and getting a 550 Watt power supply is overkill. Maybe it would be a good idea if you had 4 hard drives in a RAID setup, Two optical Drives, Two monitors, and ALL of your PCI slots filled up then perhaps a 550 Watt PS would be warranted.

I still think your problem is a defective board.

And the Kevman soap opera continues..................

well, I 'm going to try another board. I guess its the only option I have tried different RAM and CPU but still hung up on 230 FSB. now all I have to do is wait for my new board...lol...this is more of a sage then a soap opera....

This JUST IN!!!

Just saw this over on the ABIT Forum Boards, that in the next Bios revision there will FINALLY be a fix for the FSB 255 WALL. So for those of us (I raise my Hand ) who have problems O'Cing above 255FSB this should solve the problem, at least in theory. And this isn't just some hearsay from some jamoke, but actually from a ABIT rep.

Here's The Link

So I ordered the newer ABIT Northbridge Heatsink Fan cooler. Just got it today and noticed what looks like there is (paraffin?) thermal wax on the underside of the Heatsink. Well I want to remove it and apply it some AS3.

Anyone know of the best way to completely remove the wax the most effective way I can. I don't really want to scrap it off as this will just leave gouges on the underside of the Heatsink.

Thanks a lot.

I hope your next board results are better. GL!
