Isnt it geopolitics?

If Xi has a plan with his move on rare earths and has anticipated Trumps tantrum as part of a larger plan... A real trade war could be brewing, maybe even more. Id love some data out of China on this situation

Everyone else on the planet is waiting for the Trump era to pass, maybe Xi sees it as opportunity. "return to normal" .... meh

The market has never not reached new highs.

We've had people predicting a recession since early '22. I've lost count at how many times the experts got it wrong.
The Bubble/Bust ballyhooing has been going on since '12.

Big reason why I haven't been paying too much attention to these types of threads.

Too many thinking of today and tomorrow and not the next 5 years.

It seems that China slit its own throat with rare earths. I'm pretty sure I can say, to a virtual certainty, no naturally occurring element will ever be found in only one or a couple of places on the planet.

Once they told us to pound sand, the ONLY issue was going to be the amount of startup/lead time needed. The only real issue, is ease or simplicity of access, not actual "existence."

Top rare earth reserves by country

1. China

Rare earths reserves: 44 million metric tons

2. Brazil

Rare earths reserves: 21 million metric tons

3. India

Rare earths reserves: 6.9 million metric tons

4. Australia

Rare earths reserves: 5.7 million metric tons*

5. Russia

Rare earths reserves: 3.8 million metric tons

6. Vietnam

Rare earths reserves: 3.5 million metric tons

7. United States

Rare earths reserves: 1.9 million metric tons

8. Greenland

Rare earths reserves: 1.5 million metric tons

Hmm BRIC are in the top 5 by themselves.

Sure we can process our own rare earths but currently we're dependent on China for refining them and shipping them back to us.

BTW interesting one there is #8 Greenland.. is that why Trump wants it so bad??

@Indus - I'm willing to bet none of those currently recognized reserves, are in any way final.

And yup, at least for now, refining seems to be a pretty nasty process, so you probably need to add remediation costs.

I should probably do a little high level research on some of the major uses, at least for perspective.

But I can guarantee that everything relating to these elements is going improve a lot faster than anyone expects.

Welp, decided to invest in Edison, very high risk investment given it's basically a startup, but I think it also has lot of potential to be super good long term. It could be the Canadian version of Tesla. I really like what they stand for too, such as right to repair.

@Red Squirrel - if EV growth has really been slowing . . .

On the other hand, Canuks are probably more environmentally conscious than the average first world consumer. If I happen to be wrong about that though, I'll still stick with the fantasy.

It comes down to safety. The US has plenty of rare earth minerals for its needs. But processing rare earths is extremely toxic: radioactive (thorium and uranium), harsh chemicals, strong acids, highly flammable, etc. I've seen at least 1000 tons of toxic waste per 1 ton of actual rare earth production (and then the estimates go higher from there), China doesn't care about worker safety and just dumps the waste anywhere. The US forbids that. So, it ends up being too expensive to process here when we include worker safety and proper waste disposal.

Their focus is more on the trucks themselves rather than the power train, they are actually considering just doing straight 18 speed diesel since the government is giving them a hard time with their diesel-electric plan so they have a plan B either way. Their diesel electric approach makes lot of sense though especially for construction related trucks like say, cement trucks. When they get on site they can shut off the diesel so it's not as loud but still do a pour on battery then go back to diesel when they leave.

Either way it's a risk though, but will see how it works out!

My not very well informed opinion is that hybrids make the most sense in pretty much every way.

Much better performance since electric is instant power, no lag.

No batteries to add weight, extra cost, etc.

Not sure what kind of torque you get but my impression is that it's at least comparable.

The only minor advantage I know of is the new bidirectional batteries. They can power an avg house, feed power back to the grid when needed - they fully exploit full EVs

Its like God planned it this way to promote peace and brotherhood among nations. China and Brazil have the worlds biggest deposits of RE by a factor of 20x!

* Saudi Arabia has easy to refine light sweet crude oil

* China has rare earths

* Brazil has rare earths and lots of lumber

* South Africa has gold and jewels

* America has innovation and technology

* India has spices, call centers and tech workers

* Mexico has Mexican Food and affordable skilled labor

* Switzerland has watches

* Japan has Hondas and Toyotas

* Canadians have bacon and maple syrup

* Greece has olive oil

* Polynesia has Tahitian Treat

* Israel has Hollywood / Banking / Government / Media personnel

* Palestine has (had) land

* Germany has techno music

* The rest of world has excess population for export

Only when they are not busy get stock quotes.

Felix.. I would be careful making such assumptions..

I saw a video where a guy in Texas tried to stop another guy from harassing his wife.. the other guy shoots him with a rifle and his wife doesn't even care, keeps looking at the first guy like it's some sort of mating ritual.

Americans are just fucked up beyond belief.

You probably know this.. as you've seen plenty of people on their smart phones but not one will render aid or call 911.
