Question about FaceTime, when he said it's wi-fi only, do you think it means it's going to be directly iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 without using the cell phone network at all or does it still use the network for the calling?

The reason I'm asking is that I'm thinking about e.g. an iPhone 4 user in the US and an iPhone 4 user in Germany. If they use FaceTime talking with each other, will it be an international call or no (since it's all wi-fi, like Skype)?

I was wondering the same thing. It must hit the AT&T network at some point so that the phones can make the initial connection... right? But does it still count against your minutes even though both parties are using their own WiFi?

The thing is it *doesn't* have to use the cell network at all if they allow it. I'm sure it's trivial for them to set up a unique ID for each of the iPhone 4 so they can communicate to each other without using the network. They don't even have to use hardware ID for this and it can be done through software, like Skype as I already mentioned.

Listening to Ryan Block's first impressions of his hands on, it sounds like the screen is killer.

Engadget agrees, "The screen is truly outrageous -- you basically cannot see pixels on it. We're not being hyperbolic when we say it's easily the best looking mobile phone screen we've ever laid eyes on."

How does that work though? There's got to be something out there making the connections.... I don't see how a unique ID alone allows you to traverse the internet.

Surely Apple is running a central server. When two iPhone 4 users decide to switch to video chat, then they would open a connection to the server and have it either pair the two up via P2P, or route everything through the server.

Furthermore I would think voice would get sent that way too in order to keep A/V sync, but who knows?

That's what I figure will happen, but I'm curious as to whether AT&T will try to deduct FaceTime minutes from your current voice plan even though they would actually be doing very little.

[edit] After looking at some more stuff about how it works, it looks as though you have to make the voice connection first and then you can hit the button to switch to video. So that would explain how the initial connection is made. I would then assume that at the point you switch to video you are no longer on the clock with AT&T.

Given the specs, I believe it.

I don't think he mentioned it today, but at the OS 4.0 preview last month he said the iPad would be getting it this "fall".

How does this new AT&T tier data plan work? I am currently on the unlimited plan. If I upgrade my iphone 3gs to the new Iphone 4 will I keep my unlimited plan or do I get put on the tier plan?

The iPod line has traditionally been getting a refresh at the annual iPod event in September, so I would expect new ones to be out around then.

11:41AM "AT&T is going to make an incredibly generous upgrade offer. If your contract expires at any time in 2010, you can upgrade to the iPhone 4. You can get it up to six months early."

Don't think mine expires this year. :( I got the 3GS last October.

I am seriously considering switching to AT&T from T-Mobile for this. I'm only paying $35/month through T-Mobile with my iphone 3g and unlimited internet. But I really want to be able to use 3G and am sick of having a jailbroken phone. I'm looking at ~$85/month through AT&T with 2GB of internet, plus I would have a lot worse service. But I think I would get a discount for having AT&T DSL and DirecTV. Only crappy thing would be going from having great service to having terrible service. The other thing to hold me back would be if I can keep my same number. I have had it for 9 years now, anyone know if I can transfer my number to AT&T from T-Mobile?

Also how does the pre-order usually work? Do you pay for it all upfront and then just have to wait for it to come in? Are you guaranteed one on day one if you preorder it?

Yea.. I hear ya, but I would definitely advise against it. I went from AT&T to T-Mobile and I was honestly thinking of switching back to AT&T, until I remembered the issues I was having. Literally every third call was a dropped call. Bad connections (3G to EDGE and back again), and super expensive.

I'm paying $96 (with taxes, etc...) for two iPhones, data, and texting, but we'd be paying almost $150 (plus tax) with AT&T. I just can't stand the abuse. If their network really was getting better, or Apple seemed to care enough to workout different solutions to off load the network, then I'd be ok with it. But I have no desire to give my money to a company who can't handle their network, and who has such blatant disregard of their customers.

Ultimately it's your call, but unless you're mainly a data user, you'll probably have problems with the phone aspect of it.

As for preordering, typically it's shipped to you day of, or you can pick it up in the store.. then they will port your number when you activate. It's actually really simple.

I'm having the same debate; however, I'm paying $40/mo. Edge is def. annoying. I would still probably jailbreak even on AT&T, but unlocking will become more of a pain as time goes on. I'm on 3.1.2 just so I can stay unlocked.

One thing that makes it harder is that the ETF was raised recently. It's $300 now, right?
