My first stock ever to eclipse $200k gain!

Congratulations. That is awesome gain.

You achieved it through hard work and persistence.

I hope so. My biggest investments, which is probably 50% total, are in RMBS and AAPL.
What a way to diversify :)

heh, are you one of those people who believe that diversification is a fine strategy if you don't know what you're doing or are a conservative/defensive investor hedging against a sudden reversal of fortune? if so, yeah you prob want to diversify a bit more :p

otherwise, what you're doing is risky but if it pays off, you'll have a better return than if you diversify "too much" (ie spreading out in 40 stocks).

You are correct, What I am doing is very risky. I had a huge loss when I sold everything and bought Fannie and Freddie last year when they were trading at around $10. I thought I was buying them at 1/7th of their price. I recovered half of my loss this year with the help of APPL, RMBS, FAS, FCX, and Janus mutual funds.

Sold most of my GGWPQ shares for a handy dandy profit. It might go up more, but I wanted to lock in profits. Thanks for a GREEN Christmas richardycc! :D

no problem man. I thought about lock in some profits today too, but then I realized that I would've made over $100k had I continue to hold and didn't "lock in" any profits from HGSI. I still have 400shares of HGSI that I bought under $3, but that's not gonna make me rich. So I will probably hold on to my GGWPQ for awhile.

Anyway, the stock of the week is ZVTK.PK, another spongetech like story, this time with an ionic lightbulbs. a CFL(?) light bulb that can clean the air. :p http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HeIeOUzsAI
one will just need to know when to get in and out with this one. good luck! disclosure: no position.

I've been following this thread on and off for the past several months - I kept hesitating to buy RMBS at $14, $15, etc., and I wish I hadn't. I'm also interested in HGSI. Is it still too late to get in?

I'm 20 and I'd like to get started investing, so I have $3000-4000 to work with. Any suggestions on how I should go about this?

Here is an example [of many index funds - which was linked from http://www.indexfunds.com/]

http://www.indexfunds100.com/

Scroll down to the "Growth of $1" chart. :)

As for which index fund to choose - I have no idea - but some of the experts here probably do [and hopefully I'm correct in assuming this is how most 401k plans work too? You just diversify into stocks/funds/etc and "hope" you have enough at the end of the day - ie: when you retire]

Awesome [with some jealousy] to hear people are making a killing off some of these stocks...

well, after a while of not paying much attention, here's what I've got on my "to look into" list:

(BK) I inherited ~1000 shares some years ago, cost basis probably under $10/share (original purchase early 90s). it's weathered the financial crisis better than most, but also hasn't really come up with the tide. I'm a little concerned about the coming mess in commercial loans (I work in the architecture/dev. industry, there are alot of bad signs floating around), and need to look into their exposure. I'm thinking about getting out after the new year.

(AAPL) yeah yeah, wait for the tablet, or just before. I'm thinking about getting out.

(CREE) - My biggest winner this year, almost tripled since I bought in Jan. I still think they're a leading company in an industry that will be growing for the next decade (LED tech), but I'm concerned there's a bit of hype pumping it a bit too high for the times. Take some profit now and buy on a dip? hmmm.

(RMBS) yep, I'm up too - bought a while ago on the recommendation from a friend who seems to be of the same mind as azurik. I need to decide on selling points, and decide how long I'm going to stay in this.

(GNVC) - I've made my way through the previous research and info. We basically know that the drug works, what's up in the air is their novel delivery method (direct injection + activated by radiation). Two possible bad outcomes: delivery method hampers effectiveness, and delivery method still carries toxicity risk. I don't think that the latter is likely - it's one of their main talking points that that isn't the case. Overall I think we'll be getting good news soon. But how good? And how high could it go on good news? I'm up to ~12,000 shares...and thinking about buying more.

I'm also looking into buying and developing a building downtown while prices are low, which would involve largely pulling out of the stock market. But with the rental market how it is...

I hopped out of GGW for a sec this AM when it was up 1/2 of 1 percent... then it dropped 15% with no news that I can find... so I bought in again for another 200 shares. Here's hoping it goes up again soonish...

it dropped because of the Hovde's response to Ackman's response. It's fun to watch if you don't the stock, but since I do own some, so I am sick of these huge drops.

oh yeah. check out PPC, the company just came out of BK today, the old stock PGPDQ.PK closed at $8.4 last night, all PGPDQ.PK got converted to PPC, it's trading at $9now. GGWPQ will probably play out like this one.

As much as I would like to short the market, it is an important election year. The .gov will do all it can to make the economy seem fine.

Yup, and I got burned this summer trying to be a smart ass by shorting. And I think the real estate bubble popped showed that bubble pops overnight, and it's hard to time the end of the bubble. Think about how long people were saying how it was all unsustainable. Hell, the .gov bubble will be even more impossible to time. Look at Japan, their public debt is at 200% of GDP, we are at 60%.

Should be fun to watch though when it happens.

Well to be honest I bought options on a market short etf and holding a small position on a gold short etf. I still have my bigger long positions. I'm also about to sell edc which I've had since it was 121, made a small gain on that one. We'll see how it plays. Last year I think it was you that told me - good luck shorting the US. I didn't too bad on that one did I?
