Bank Losses Drain Deposit Fund, F.D.I.C. Reports

Even as financial stocks have rallied nearly 60 percent since the end of March, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation issued another grim report card Thursday on the health of the nation?s banks.

The agency reported that the banking industry lost $3.7 billion in the second quarter amid a surge in bad loans made to home builders, commercial real estate developers, and small and midsize businesses.

Its deposit insurance fund dropped 20 percent, to $10.4 billion, in the second quarter, its lowest level in nearly 16 years.

And the number of ?problem banks? increased to 416, from 305 in the first quarter, and is expected to remain high, the F.D.I.C. said.

Indeed, federal officials warned that a rebound in the banking sector could lag an economic recovery by a year or more. ?In many important respects, financial markets are returning to normal,? the F.D.I.C. chairwoman, Sheila C. Bair, said. ?Cleaning up balance sheets is a painful process that does take time, but it is absolutely necessary to the industry?s sustained profitability.?

ETFC is finally making a slight movement..it was a flatliner at 1.3-1.4 for the longest time while all other financial/bank stocks were all going up like crazy.

After making a 100% gain in WFC, it is still undervalued (I paid $14). I want to sell in the low $30s, but I am thinking about selling in order to buy USG. My back of napkin estimate puts USG at $45 or so. USG is currently at $15.

USG is a tough one. Free cash flows are all over the place historically. Even if you normalize cap ex before looking at FCF.

So, I see WFC being about 30% undervalued but USG is about 60% undervalued. I need to really nail down what USG is worth though. I have to dig through annual reports, especially those revolving around 2006 when they filed chapter 11 and emerged.

The thing with USG is that even with modest FCF estimates going forward, it is still grossly undervalued. Even though I am still at back of napkin estimate stage.

If only JNJ would correct.

Does anyone have any good source to discover upcoming IPOs?
Xunlight is going to be huge, so I want to hop on board with the IPO but want to have knowledge of when that's going to happen, but can't find any clues.
They've recently delivered their first commercial shipment off their newly installed and proven production line, and back in May (or was it March...) they stated how they planned to begin delivering to all their "contracted customers" (the ones with which letters of intent and letters of interest were changing hands) by the end of Q3, and so far they have delivered to the University of Toledo... that is the school from which they were a tech spin-off.

Does that give anybody any realistic guesses for an IPO? So far the company has been using various grants and awards, as well as loans from the State of Ohio to fund themselves into this position.
They plan to install 3 more production lines of the same size as the current line (25MW each), but that'll obviously come after sales of the first solar film rolls.

Not only is that my hometown's university, the company is staying in Toledo and providing an excellent employment opportunity. Helping out both my hometown and state economy, of which is great, especially for the city - detroit jr is a joke nickname, but it isn't all that far from the truth.

Looks like TSRA is set to go down...

Text
Tessera Loses trade ruling Tessera Technologies Iost a U.S. trade ruling in its efforts to get new licensing revenue from makers of computer-memory chips, including Acer and Nanya Technology. Its shares fell more than 11 percent. U.S. International Trade Commission Judge Theodore Essex said Friday that the companies didn't violate Tessera's patent rights related to packaging that goes around the chips to protect them from damage yet lets them be made smaller and faster. The judge's findings are subject to review by the six-member commission in Washington. "No violation" has "occurred in the importation into the United States ... or the sale within the United States," Essex wrote. Tessera said it will challenge the decision. ? Bloomberg News

Its already down 6% after hours

Marvel was up 29% after Disney agreed to buy for $4 billion. I can't believe Wolverine and Mickey Mouse belong to the same company.

reverse stock split.

It jumped from < $1 to ~$20 because of the 20:1 reverse split, but then it went from $20 -> $50 on its own. They did post their first profit in 2 years and got a new CEO, but that does seem like a huge runup.

This gain without news worries me abit, so I've just sold 200shares to recoup most of my initial investment amount, will let the rest ride.

Any word on goings on with TSRA? Ive got sept options I need to figure out what to do with.

Slew Foot - settlements and other announcements are always a possibility anytime, but when is anyone's guess. I sold out of my Sept 30's a while ago for a good profit, I'm only holding shares at the moment. The next litigation decision by the same Judge Essex is due in November I believe. As the time goes closer, I will probably buy options for leverage on that.

thanks azurik, I have some option for TSRA due to expire on the 19th ... hopefully things can turn around quickly :(
