I'm sitting on VUSTX and VGENX.

Plus the stuff in my 401k which is getting hit hard but I'm not touching that for a while.

Foreigns are sinking to fresh session lows. US pre-market indices are now marked to open down heavily.

I don't think VUSTX protects against inflation.
You might as well get VIPSX (IMO).

Unless you want to short the market...

Put it in a brokerage account where you can earn interest, yet have access to it for when the bottom completely falls out of the market, and buy some qqqq's or vfinx funds.

Any good articles/blogs out there detailing the broad implications if a top investment firm like Bear Stearns did fail?

You could expect a hiring freeze. With Jp morgan most likely buying them, there will be plenty of personel to fill vacancies before the rest of the redundancy gets booted.

I would be supporting their trading platform and doing some fix connectivity stuff. JPM already have a bunch of guys that do that...Bears aren't my top choice after the various rounds of interviews and with their current situationand past few months looking ropey it wasn't going to be my first choice.

I bought KFT @ $29.75 and WMI @ $32.30 this morning.
I look forward to increasing my holding in both companies.
Value play, and they both pay a hefty dividend. I'll be in them for the long term.

My purchase of BAC(or anything financial for that matter) has been put on hold for now.
Unless something drastic happens such as BAC dropping to the $30.xx range or less, it's on the back burner.

LOL!! I couldn't even short Lehmans Brothers (LEH). Too many shares out. I use Scottrade btw.

Just curious on how much he actually lost. He didn't come back and give us an update. Heck, I've taken my fair share of losses this past year. My retirement has taken such a bloodletting it's not even funny. If you're in the hole it's nice to know that you're not alone in the hole.

I have a short turbo position on Eurostoxx50 that finally made me some money: +12%
I also have a long turbo on oil, I have made 21% on this one. I'm not selling for the moment because I think there will be at least another skeleton that will fall out of the skeleton, if that happens I will sell the Eurostoxx position

I also have a position in 2 European banking stock which are very much in bloody red right now
I lost 11% on my position on Fortis and 15% on my position in KBC. I'm keeping these for the long run because I think that the fundamentals are right. I probably will buy some more of these. Until now their losses because of the subprime mess are not to big, but who knows, apparantly respectable giants can go broke now in 48 hours

If you trade long enough, you're going to take hits like this. I had my fair share of beatdowns and I expect I'll have more in the future.

Today's action encouraged me and I'm thinking about taking a stab at Goldman and going long via stock or calls before earning. Am I crazy?

With the rumor I keep hearing of them having a $3 billion write down tomorrow, I'd say yes.

haha. not big ;) Somebody should've pm'ed me to update

Name Symbol Last price Change Shares Cost basis Mkt value Gain Gain % Day's gain
The Bear Stearns Companies Inc. BSC 4.81 -25.19 (-83.97%) 5.00 173.30 24.05 (149.25) -86.12% (125.95)

Although if I had bigger numbers, I probably would've /myself. Oh well, live and learn. To get myself through the day, I just remind myself of my friend's weekend vegas trip. He lost all his money. I still have $25.

When peons like us have heard the rumor, I believe it's somewhat priced in. I believe tradeable rally is coming as too many people are piling on and pressing. Fiercest rallies occur in the context of the bear market and maybe the Fed and Goldman will be the catalyst.

There will only be a rally in Goldman shares tomorrow if...
a) Bernanke cuts rate 1-1.25% tomorrow leading to a general rally in the entire market.
b) GS reports much less write downs than expected (ex: <$3 billion)

You are right that it's already priced in, however I still wouldn't take such a risk.

If I read that right...5 shares is relatively nothing. No need for the PM. No sense in kicking a man when he's down. :D

I just checked when Goldman was reporting. 8:30am tomorrow morning. I guess I won't be playing.
