I bought my first stock a week ago... here's what I've done so far.

Owned for less than a day (gains/losses estimated 'cause I'm too lazy to look): AMD (+8%), SIGM (+1%), NOV (-1%)... these were basically just gambles
Currently holding longer term hopefully: BHP (+4.9%), MSM (+3.6%), NVDA (-2.3%)

Question: How can you avoid getting burned by after hours trading... e.g., if a stock were to go down 30% after hours like VMW. Is your only option to set a stop loss for after hours trading each day? It seems like these expire every day with my broker...

You don't have a Good Till Cancelled option?

Not for after hours trades. I don't have a trailing stop either for that matter so I have to keep adjusting it. I'm probably going to switch brokers but I wanted to try trading for a while to see if it's something I really want to do before I bother switching to another institution. I'm trading in my Roth IRA and it kind of seems like a pain to roll it over...

GTC doesn't work with Stop orders in extended hours trading, only with Limit orders, and you still have to choose the + Extended hours option. The only way to not get burned with AH crashes is to watch the stock during those hours and enter a limit order + extend hours option then (though you'll still get burned, just hopefully not as bad).

Jeez, that's crazy. I guess Microsoft made an offer on Yahoo! (if you didn't know)

@#$!@# was thinking to get Yahoo when analyst were giving them a beating after Jerry Yang kinda gave a confrontational analyst call. 61% premium....that's quite a bit. Looks like MS is really serious about this deal so they can challenge Google. Maybe time to short Goog?

Jeez, that MS bid for Yahoo came out of the blue. Some insiders must be making a killing off of that.

If anything I think it will solidify Google as the tech god for years to come. Yahoo will now be guaranteed to go nowhere with Microsoft as its daddy, and Microsoft will go nowhere with a $45b Yahoo that goes nowhere.

So I see it as a win-win for Google...they now no longer have to worry about burying Microsoft nor Yahoo, as they will conveniently bury themselves.

Yeah kudos for keeping it on the DL (ha ha, I hate that term). However, the idea has been out there for some time so it's not a total surprise.

this was not DL, I saw the huge increase in jan and Feb 25 call back few months ago and made a mental note that something might be up, too bad I didn't act on it.

If the announcement caused the stock to jump 50% in one day it was probably a pretty good secret...

EDIT: What is "DD"? Saw this in a couple of the earlier posts in this thread. e.g., "Did you do the DD on that stock?"

DD = due diligence, it means researching the stock thoroughly on your own to come up with your own sound investment decision

whatever comes will come. gained slightly on my previous TM @107 and the DELL @20.06 yesterday. I'm a sucker for buying SBUX way before and i bought C at a totally wrong time. VFINX is still just an index fund at an uncertain market.

give it a few years, i'm sure everything will be alright.

btw, except for insiders, i can't even imagine anyone betting on the struggling YHOO before today.

Indeed, and even those who bought on previous buyout rumours have likely still lost.

Sold my longterm Costco holding yesterday to raise some cash. Hopefully I can buy it back at a lower price. I shorted Citi today near the close and bought Merck. Both feel wrong at the moment as Citi and the rest of the financials are showing incredible strength and drugs feel so sick and heavy. $30 should be a major battleground for C, and I'm betting it'll fail to break through first time. We'll see. I haven't seen Merck trade this heavy and poor since after the Vioxx recall.

I feel both MRK and SGP were both oversold IMO.

There's a Vytorin report is due sometime in March.

Performance anxiety funds walked up these names during the year end to pad their numbers so it should come as no surprise these are getting hammered as rats jump ship. It's interesting to note how BIDU bounced off $240 support like clockwork. I see Google pulling a BIDU now it broke $600 support. Apple should join the other horsemen after tonight and settle in the low $120 range.

Google got BIDUed. Amazing as $700 seemed like only yesterday. I wonder who the new four horsemen will be and if any of the former names will be included.

Just another rollercoaster day in the stock market, will you beeeee, my neighbor?

The big reason for today's drop has to do with the ISM index contracting for the first time in 58 months or so. It was a pretty big drop where historically it has only gone up or down a couple points each month.
