All the ones in the San Jose area are display models and CANNOT be returned (you can get store credit, but that's somehwhat useless if you're buying a clearance item- anything you exchange it for will be regular priced)

what if something's wrong with it? can you get your money back or will they still pond off the store credit on you? also, if you buy a display item, the OD guy told me ALL warranties still apply. too bad i can't get gateway to recognize my serial number. they are asking me to get an 'order number' from OD? i don't even know if OD knows what that number is. GATEWAY SUCKS! the machine may be a good machine, but their customer support sucks.

No, that's the problem. It's basically AS IS under all circumstances.

Perhaps the warranty does apply. But you may not have a box, or whatever you need to prove the purchase.

Typically when you buy display goods, you can return it only if it doesn't work, and then only for the price of what you paid (ie you cannot exchange, which makes sense.) You can't return it if it's missing something, because that's expected in that sale.

Gateway should honor the warranty regardless - they aren't involved in the sale, only in the warranty. They just need proof of a receipt - you just need to e-mail Gateway's customer service (not tech support) department, spell out what happened, and they'll fix you up.

update:

price has dropped to 799.02. if you purchased within the last 2 weeks, you should be able to get money back. I purchased 3 weeks ago and got a credit for $214 today. YMMV, since this is clearance...
