Don't know, I do know that where I'm from it's always been called Soda and unless someone can give me a valid reason NOT to continue using the term Soda, or a better reason to use Pop, it will continue to be classified as Soda for me =)

And actually Whiskey & Beer are classified as "alcoholic beverages" since Alcohol is the ingredient that makes them stand out. Much like Soda in carbonated beverages.

There are Bubbles in Champagne, and I'm sure various other drinks that aren't called Pop.

Ok, it's a wording thing I guess. What "distinguishes" Soft Drinks/Soda/Pop from other drinks is the Soda or carbonated water in it. That's why I think it's a better fit to call it Soda than Pop. I don't think you've yet provided a good reason to call it Pop. This is a funny argument, but entertainment none-the-less =)

Pop is the old style country name for Cola/Soda/etc, it'll fade away sooner or later with any luck 😛

Same with beer. Why is it called that? Pop is only one syllable, and soda still simply refers to carbonated water to me. My cooler is full of frosty pop & beer, not soda & beer! 😕

Haha this reminds me of the time that my old overseas roommate told me he wished he had brought some pot with him. I'm like thinking to myself, I'm glad he didn't bring any and how'd I end up with a pot-smoking roommate.

Well 1 month he said it again and it turns out he didn't say "pot" he said "pop". That's reason enough to use "soda" instead.
