Nvidia is in deep sh!t here. The FX is hot, loud, and takes up a lot of space and power. But its only slightly faster than the 9700 pro and a lot more expensive. If their price doesn't come down fast, ATI is going to wipe the floor, especially when the R350 comes out.

What makes you think NV35 has 256bit memory-bus? Wishful thinking? NV hasn't said anything about NV35 having 256bit bus

about the card, DOA, too slow, too loud, too expensive, almost like the parhelia ;)

i think they would have to charge a few for that

other the massinve increase of hits would be expensive

How about incorporating them into the graphs :D

ps. make them a subscriber feature & you will get more subscribers :D

In short:

1. More or less similar performance with no AA or AF
2. With AA + AF 9700 bitch-slaps FX.
3. FX is considerably more expensive
4. FX has that noisy and space-eating cooling-solution
5. 9700 has superior AF and it seems that AA is also better
6. Does FX have room for overclocking? Not much if any I think. 9700 has quite alot of OC-room.
7. R350 will soo be here.

Can anyone think of a reason to get FX instead of 9700? I could think of just one reason: superior Linux-support. But Ati's Linux-support is getting better, so....

So this is the big rollout everyone was waiting for? I feel bad for people who held off on buying a 9700 pro to wait for a FX.
I love my ti4200 but if I was in teh market now there is no doubt I would choose the 9700 pro.

Exactly my thoughts. Anyone listen to that MP3 that tomshardware recorded? Holy shiznit, never ever will a video card be in my computer that is nearly as loud as a vacuum cleaner!

I second the motion. Straight shooting, very comprehensive review. What shocks me is ATI's 3D quality is that much better than nvidia. And even though the FX is clocked much higher, it still performs to a virtual tie with the lower clocked 9700 Pro. A higher clocked ATI would have no problem trouncing the FX.

A little OT: if the wide 256-bit bus of the Radeon helped it perform so well, then maybe it also applies to the Hammer 64-bit CPU. A widening of the bus instead of increasing clock speed results in better performance increases.

Yeah I listened to the media files of the fans of the 2 cards. I turned the volume up so I could hear real good so that I could detect the difference. I listened to the ATI card first. Sounded loud enough. Then I listened to the Geforce FX card and it was louder. Then the fan kicked in to overdrive and it made me jump out of my seat. Nobody is going to want a fan that loud in their computer.

Hammer's 64 bitness has nothing to do with the width of the memory bus, which is what the Radeon's 256 bit bus refers to.

The fan throttling has its advantages...
At least now you know when your computer has crashed while looping 3dmark without even being in the same room!

I'm shocked! Who would have thought nvidia would produce a sub-par video card months after ATI released the 9700?

The days of the Ti looks to be gone. I'm actually holding on to my Ti4200 for as long as I can. However the more time passes the more I think of buying an 9500Pro (to save cash) or 9700Pro (for more speed).

Btw, the .avi files were funny LOL!!!

I liked Anand's review the best (as usual). Very objective and comprehensive, not seemingly strung out like THG's review. The image quality comparison mouseovers were a great idea, makes it very easy to compare without having to alt-tab back and forth a whole bunch or zoom in and crop screenshots in an image editing program.

Overall I felt pretty underwhelmed by the FX, which is the first time I've ever had that feeling about an NVIDIA product release. Seems like if they had made their original (Aug 2002), or originally revised (Nov 2002) targets, it would've been better received and more competitive. It remains to be seen how well the two families (R300/NV3x) do in next-gen games, shame that there aren't any good DX9 things to benchmark with, and Doom3 is still some ways away.

I'd be pretty happy with the whole situation if I were ATI. NVIDIA finally catches up, but I'm sitting on the R350 which should be ready to go pretty soon. Will be interesting to see how things shape up this year. :)

Holy crap, I just listened to the 2 audio files! I thought the beginning of the FX clip was too loud, but then it kicks it into high gear! Jesus, that's a loud freaking card. There is no way in hell I'd ever have that thing in my system. I played the 9700 clip first and I thought it was a little loud, but it's amazing how quiet the 9700 seemed right after watching the FX clip.
