I just leave mine on windshield. I have had a problem before.

Hmmm... So what was the problem you had before?

my tomtom sets via suction right here

and then i can conceal it in the compartment behind it when not in use.

Does it pick up the sats from down there?

I'd think yes since that's where she uses it. :p

Suction cup on the windshield. The unit doesn't get left in the car though but the mount does. GPS units are so cheap these days I doubt most people would break into a car just because they see a mount. Could be for a radar detector, GPS unit, etc.

Get a friction mount, easier to remove when you exit the car.

Whats a friction mount? And how does it differ from a suction mount?

this is the one i use... you just stick the suction cup to it instead of the windshield.
I believe it's illegal to put a GPS on the windshield in CA (I don't live there), but this is pretty convenient - just put it on the floor after parking... to obviously not leave the unit in plain sight.

I have an old school GPS called a compass. It's mounted to the center of the car right above the windshield. I wish it was built into the rear view mirror instead.

I'm trying to figure out the best position for visibility but still be easy enough to detach and toss into the glove compartment after I leave the car (presumably I'd keep my gps with me, but even leaving the hook-up on my dashboard seems like it might scream "omg there might be a gps inside here, break the window and try to find it!")

I leave the suction mount on my windshield. I take off the actiual GPS when I park and I put it in a compartment. The GPS mount is located in the middle of my windhshield, but for a while, I kept it at the very right of the windshield.

Depending on what brand GPS device you have, you'll be able to find lots of custom mounts for specific cars. Look up ProClip USA, KUDA Mounts and Mount Guys to see specific Garmin and TomTom mounts for your specific vehicle. I have a cheap Toyota Yaris hatchback. The hatchback has a driver side glovebox and I put a Garmin mounting ball there (along with a new lighter plug inside the glove box, just for the GPS):

That's a Garmin StreetPilot c580 in the pic.. I've since replaced it with a Nuvi 760. The mounting ball is a universal one that you fasten with four screws to whatever surface you want it on. The ball end will work with any recent Garmin device. It would work well with a ProClip or Kuda mount.

Better throw that in the glove box when you leave the car, don't want someone breaking your windows to steal it.

Mine goes on the bottom left corner of my window with the suction mount. However, the suction mount from Garmin sucks pretty bad so I keep my window closed when I use it.

I've already visualized the GPS complete with suction mount falling off, sliding off my dash and right out the window...hasn't happened yet, but wouldn't be suprised at all if it did. :D

I don't really use the GPS in town anyways since I know my way around town pretty well - it's pretty much exclusively used for out of town driving only.

Bottom left corner of my window also. I also have a Garmin and the suction mount always falls off after a while.

So now I just keep it in the cupholder if I'm using it.

a few of the new tomtoms models have improved "easyport" mounts that fold right into the unit. pretty cool idea, saves the trouble of a having to deal with a separate mount piece. i usually stick mine in the center of my windshield.
