where do you have it in your car?

I'm trying to figure out the best position for visibility but still be easy enough to detach and toss into the glove compartment after I leave the car (presumably I'd keep my gps with me, but even leaving the hook-up on my dashboard seems like it might scream "omg there might be a gps inside here, break the window and try to find it!")

In my car, I use a suction cup mount on the front windshield. In my wife's car (Beetle w/ large dashboard), we have a sandbag-rubbery thing that sits on the dashboard to hold it. We always remove the GPS and either put it in a bag or at least the glove compartment before we leave the car.

I guess it just depends where you live. In my area, people don't even bother removing them. It's standard to have one now, just like a cell phone. If you live in a bad area, GPS's are the new car stereos :(

Bah....I quit using my GPS. I only pull it out for long trips when I'm trying to figure out my ETA on the fly or locate asian massage parlors on the Interstate.

I have my GPS in the upper left hand corner of my windshield, which is actually illegal in some states I've heard.

I hate having it down at the bottom of the windshield. It makes it so difficult to use it.

I have a friction mount for my Garmin.

I had the suction mount but it melted and stopped working last summer when we had record heat.

I just set the friction mount on the front center of my dash above my radio.

The nice part of the friction mount is that you can easily just grab it and set it on the floor board of the car out of view when parking somewhere.

It also makes it easy to grab and put into someone else's care on the fly (which I do when in my wife's car from time to time)

my tomtom sets via suction right here

and then i can conceal it in the compartment behind it when not in use.

Does it pick up the sats from down there?

Whats a friction mount? And how does it differ from a suction mount?

I have my GPS built in with my Motorola Q9C phone. I use it then put it back in my pocket. Take that, thieves.

It sits on your dashboard instead of sticking to the windshield. They're kind of heavy and have a textured base so it doesn't slide around. They work surprisingly well, mine never moves at all. They're a bit bigger than a suction mount though.

After reading about the rash of car break-ins because thieves target the cars with the suction cup marks on the windshield, we got a thing like Kaido mentioned in the 2nd post. It just sits on the dashboard and friction holds it in place.
