Of Apples and Audis

It just occured to me that Apple and Audi have a lot in common.

1) Both are premium priced in their segment

2) Yet, most of the products they move are pretty damn slow (think puny 2L 4 bangers, and inferior Core i5 and dual Core i7s, even Core 2 Duos)

3) However, they do represent well received design and build quality (Audis for the interior)

4) And both seem to capture people's hearts through their simplistic yet elegant designs, which all end up looking exactafreakingly the same...

5) But, they all look the same

6) AND they both have white glowy representations (white glowing apple, and Audi's fruitilicious glowing mascara DRLs)

I think we have found the secret to their successes, because despite lackluster products, they sell "premiumness" and "sexiness". Thoughts?

Enjoy your Toyotas and bullshit homemade PC's then.
I hate Macs as much as the other guy, but once you start dissing Audi, we got issues.

At least Toyota makes a good beater, I'll be enjoying a Lotus or a BMW shortly. :awe:

i think Audis are sexy as hell, but I fail to see the value in it. BMW trumps it in driving experience in every segment. The A5 is sexy as hell, but it is too freaking big and heavy for a coupe. Heck, even the A4 looks smaller than the A5. C'mon Audi, give me a light nimble coupe like the 135 or even the 335.

Is Apple as unreliable as Audi/VW as well? Or is that the first differance?

Probably one of the few sole differences. Though they have their own issues, like ball-toasting goodness of 101C Core i7s.

A5 is slow as hell, S5 gets 12mpg, and RS5 is $100K territory. It's probably the sexiest coupe ever made though, south of $100K that is.

IIRC Audis only have a Tegra chip inside so the Macs are way faster.

Hrm, I'd put the performance of an s4/s5 nearly on par with a 335, but I'm not sure what the price differences are, not much I assume.

Car and Driver actually rated the S4 higher than the 335i...and the pricing is nearly identical. The starting price is slightly higher for the S4, but includes more kit. Once you start optioning them up similarly, the prices are on par.

The difference is that an S5 is in M3 price territory.

??? really?

S5 starts at $52,400
M3 starts at $58,400

Now I'll give you that the M3 is a far superior car...but there is a good $6K between starting prices. 11% difference is pretty substantial.

I'm not an Audi fan...but the S5 looks pretty f0cking bad ass! But I can appreciate the crazyness of the old RS4 estate! :D

But whats value for money if it saves you time later? I find that iMovie is quick, dirty and fast for simple edits that I do. But it's pretty BS in that I can't slow mo or encode and edit another project though...I use to have a nightmare on the pc with premiere and other editing software...the Macbook comes out of sleep really fast and it works well.

People don't mind paying for features, ease of use which is harder to quantify in terms of 'specs'. Yeah, you defintely get a bit less/ a lot for your money but does the average user really feel the speed differences anyway?

not really. S4 starts at 45K. M3 sedan starts at 55K. 335xi sedan starts at 42K. So the S4 is closer to 335 than M3 in terms of price

Not in that range. That's almost the difference paying tax and not.

2.0L 4cyl's can be surprisingly powerful.

I really want a nimble snow-ready car. The WRX and Lancer Evo platforms both have similar small 4cyl engines. That's all they need. Those cars can devour ones with big beastly engines. ;)

not really. S4 starts at 45K. M3 starts at 58K. 335xi sedan starts at 42K. So the S4 is closer to 335 than M3 in terms of price

Ouch, numbers are not your strong suit eh? 4 and 5 are distinct.

Audis are typically a good value for what you're getting. For instance, the A4 undercuts the 3-series and C-class while providing what some would argue is similar quality. The higher you move in the lineup (toward the A8's, 7 series and S-class) the price difference becomes greater while still providing a competitive product with the higher priced cars. Can't exactly say the same about Apple.
