Newsom is a former mayor of SF and has modest approval ratings as CA governor. His family does have movie star good looks though.

For reasons you alluded to, I've always said I don't like Harris or Newsom's chances in the Rust Belt. In an alternate timeline where Joe Biden had not ran for reelection, I believe neither would have won the nomination.

Some people like the middle; "left wing agendas" can lose you elections. The Dems have basically lost the middle already, going too far into identity politics. I just saw one of Kamala's statements since becoming the presumptive nominee. Did she address the economy, the border, international unrest? No, the first thing she pounded on, as she has done continuously, was reproductive rights. I am all for a reasonable policy on allowing abortion (something along the lines of Roe v Wade), but to anyone whose primary concern is this issue, the Dems are already the clear winner. Move on to other issues. Try to win back independents, and "the middle".

Honestly this was fully lined up to be a shit show. Some of the initial takes that were circulating were dogshit. One of them saying Biden wasn't going to endorse her was... uhhh... something.

Biden is going to go out an incredibly successful 1 term president that put his ego aside and did the right thing. She's going to take off running with the support and that warchest keeping her afloat while she is free to campaign and he can run the country.

I was basically trying to say that Biden has done a very good job. I think I was consistent in that.

The point I was making is that many have yet to realize the full benefits of his actions as they were long term plays. Money from the infrastructure / Inflation Reduction Act is just finally converting into actual projects in people’s back yards. Inflation is finally reaching target levels and the Fed will soon cut rates. Once that happens the job market will start getting better and new mortgage payments will drop. That’s all great stuff, it’s just the average person won’t really “feel” the most impactful benefits of all this great stuff until the next 4 years.

The analogy I was trying to make is if you judged Obama’s economy and achievements based on the first 3.5 years it would probably not look so rosey either. The botched ACA rollout, narrowly avoiding a recession. But obviously he laid out a lot of great stuff and got to reap the rewards in second term.

Biden stepping down now will in a way rob him of “proof” of the great work he did as most Americans have the memory of a goldfish, whether Harris or Trump wins next they will get the bulk of the credit for the economic boom that is likely to follow in the mind of the public. I’m but I hope history will acknowledge him for successfully navigating the COVID recovery at the very least. I’m also a big fan of the infrastructure projects and everything he did and tried to do for student loan forgiveness.

In some ways, Joe Biden was a victim of his own success. His early attempts to support the economy reopening after Covid had two side effects. One, they likely exacerbated inflation by a couple percent. More importantly, voters enjoyed the stimmy money as short-lived as it was. It was like a sugar rush for plebs, but Biden gets no love once it's gone (likewise, enhanced UI and the CTC put a lot of money into people's pockets). None of this Covid relief spending was sustainable, but regular people don't care about that. What have you done for me lately?

And you're spot on that the BIL and IRA are massive wins, but largely long-term in impact. Even so, a state like AZ is already benefiting and yet they're giving Biden no credit for the federal largesse.

It will truly suck if Trump ends up getting credit for Bidenomics, while rolling back environmental regulations along the way. If Harris is the beneficiary, then by extension, Biden gets his dues. Proper historians will remember his presidency accurately enough. Americans (mainly Repub voters) have already forgotten how DJT was a bottom-5 all time president so I couldn't give two fucks how they assess the Biden presidency now or later.

The fact is a woman can only be elected if certain conditions are met, as we learned from Hildabeast. But hopefully there are enough people Trump pissed off (GenZ, 65+ who need prescription drugs, social security and medicare) that it may give her an opening.

Generations are an arbitrary made up term that only really made sense with regards to Baby Boomers. Trying to parse out the vote using generations is useless. Sex/gender, age, religion, race, etc., are going to be a lot more relevant.

Harris still has to prove herself capable, but for fucks sake, she is not in the same category as Palin. And the polls didn't matter a month ago and they still don't matter now. The only thing that matters is voter turnout - it's the only thing that has actually mattered, for any election, in all of history. If like 12% of remaining elected Democrats with name recognition who haven't endorsed Harris get behind Harris, all Harris has to do is appear competent, pick a decent VP, and then put money into getting everyone who isn't a fascist enabler or collaborator out to vote.

My wife has an email from Joe when the US government forgave her public service loans. The student loan debt that has been forgiven under the Biden is an absolute win for that admin and they should be running with "Keep us in office and there will be plenty more".

Not having $1200 a month or more you are throwing out the window to service student loan debt does nothing for anyone but financial institutions. Put that money back in the economy and generate some jobs.
