Having read Frederick Douglass's autobiography and 12 Years a Slave I know that slaves in America were tortured and terrorized far beyond the ken of most all Americans alive today. I resented the assertion that slaves are free to think what they want. The cruel people that owned them and their overseers, the worst of them in particular, tried to stamp out free thinking. Read just the beginning of Douglass' book. Slavery was America's original sin.
