OCZ Vertex 2 120GB SSD 169.99 AR Newegg Shell Shocker

I've heard that the Vertexes have a higher failure rate due to a customized version of the Sandforce firmware. Not sure how true that is, might just be because they have a higher quantity in sales so we see more failures.

Pretty hot price though - I'm glad to see prices finally starting to drop. The 240GB G.Skill Phoenix Pro dropped about a hundred bucks, down to $424, just recently. Starting to get slightly more affordable 😀

Great! I've been scouring SSD deals for the past month, almost pulling the trigger many times. Finally bought this drive today - THIS is the deal I've been waiting for!

I was in the same boat you were. I almost bought a Corsair but talked myself out of it after reading many reviews about it having problems, dying, and terrible customer support. I finally pulled the trigger on this drive this morning. This is my first SSD and I've actually never even used a system with a fast SSD installed. Definitely excited about trying it out when it gets here!

Well I had one fail just the other day after installing windows. Had to send it back.

The replacement is working so far.

I have another one which has been going for about a month.

Whenever there's a deal on Vertex 2, someone inevitably posts about the reports of failures for these drives. I'm skeptical that it's as wide spread as people are making it seem plus there's always warranties.

I'm gonna bite.

I don't know about Vertex 2 drives, but I bought an original Vertex drive when they came out, and it arrived DOA. First HD I've ever had arrive DOA in almost 20 years of buying hard drives. Got a replacement drive, and it didn't make it a week before it died. Another first, having a replacement for a dead drive die. Got a second replacement and it has worked fine. Coincidental bad luck? Maybe, but 2 dead drives in a row has me wary of buying another OCZ drive.

When Seagate was the first out the gate with 4GB drives (yeah I really mean 4000MB) I was working at a company that decided they had to have them. We needed 10 and so we bought 10. 6 came in DOA so we bought 12 more and 9 came in DOA, so we bought 6 more and 3 of those came in DOA. That's 28 drives 18 DOA and yes I got to RMA each and every one, and some of the replacements came in DOA too.

THAT is an example of when you know either the new tech or a HUGE batch problem was to be blamed.

RMA replacements that are DOA should never happen because the company should be holding a stock of *tested* drives. OCZ should know better but I doubt they're having the same amount of trouble with their drives as Seagate had back then.

PS - I own 2 Vertex 2 60GB and have had no issues at all. 6months on 1, 2months on the other.

FWIW my 120GB Vertex 2 has been working great. Also got my $30 OCZ rebate back just about a week ago.

Had a 60GB Vertex before this and never had any problems with it either.

I have an ocz core. It failed after 3 years and 2 months. I sent it back, and they will be sending me a replacement drive, though it is out of warranty.

I bought a vertex II 80gb drive. Seems to be working so far.
I think OCZ support is pretty reasonable, which is why I bough the vertex II.

Damnn I remember paying like $450 for this 120GB version like 2 years ago. (original Vertex) Seems like a good deal.

I've also had a Vertex die on me, but considering that it was first gen I don't want to make any hasty connections

Have you noticed a speed difference between the two drives?
In terms of how fast they feel, I don't think so, although obviously the Vertex 2 benchmarks much faster. Main reason for upgrading was more space, and I think when I bought this the original Vertex drives weren't much/any cheaper than Vertex 2 after rebate, so it was kind of a no brainer.
