Just read that "bleh"

Not sure what this has to do with anything though. It is fiction, not his stance on the issues.

Now look, a good little Republican like me standing up for a Democrat.

And it's appreciated, we need more people willing to step outside party lines when it's the right thing to do. This board is partisan enough as it is...

This seems like a streach to put it mildly. Not only is it a work of fiction about Vietnam written some time ago, its a book Senator John McCain has specifically praised.

Well, I dunno. It just made me feel weird about this guy, who'd actually think these weird-ass thoughts enough to put them in a book.

Doesn't matter to me anyway, I don't live in Virginia. I'm just saying I won't be majorly disappointed if Webb isn't a Senator post-election day.

Now some may disagree, but I consider myself to be a pretty reasonable person, and this, admittedly, non-issue would make me think twice about voting for this guy or whomever's in the little "I" section of the ballot.

So this could be the thing that puts Allen on top.

I never really understood why he added some of those passages to his books; because, otherwise, they are decent books... and this is a free country and all, so he can write whatever he wants.

That said, I am from VA, and I have other reasons to not vote for Webb. This weird release wont influence my decision either way.

Allen already had that election by a hair. This brilliantly executed October Surprise clinches it. You are deceiving yourselves if you think passages like those Drudge lists won't unsettle Virginian voters. Especially women, following the controversy where Webb questioned womens' roles in the military, and failed to put the issue to rest or even explain his previous comments sufficiently.

I STILL don't understand why you guys think this has anything to do with his suitability for serving as Senator. Ok, maybe some of it IS a little weird, but when writing fiction a lot of things are added for a lot of different reasons. That doesn't mean it's reflective of what the author believes or thinks about, that's why it's called FICTION. Tom Clancy has written about flying a plane into the capitol building...does anyone think he's in favor of someone doing that?

Of course it will have an impact, it's the only kind of thing that does in politics today. Voters are too stupid and/or too poorly informed for the candidates' stances on the issues to get them very far, so it's down to trying to smear the other guy as much as humanly possible.

I should PM this to everyone who calls me a shill and a hack. If I am getting paid to post that one would get me fired.

Very true, I lived in Va for 9 years total. Parts of it are very religious and conservative.

For those who have read the book, is this one of those passages that make you go "where the hell did that come from"? or are they part of the story?

I mean if Robert Langdum and Sophie (DaVinci Code) had sex in the bathroom of the jet plane I would have been like "what hell" as well.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, a great deal of political debate involves people forming these ideas in their mind of what each side is like, and then trying to force everyone they disagree with into that space. It's much worse on the internet, when we know virtually nothing about people other than quickly typed responses to (probably) the most divisive issues of the day. I get the feeling that if we all got together and had a few beers we would be VERY surprised what people are actually like.

Rain, I agree on the beer issue.
I bet most of us would get along great in person.
The big question is who would get drunk and start yelling anti-Semitic remarks? :)

The majority of people will only hear 'sex act' and not the rest.

I think Webb was going to lose anyway, but it would suck to lose because of something you wrote in a book. (Re-writing all my books and taking out sex scene between character named John and hot bi-sexual hooker)

if the sick crap you put in a book was considered a charactor flaw, then we'd be throwing away the key to god's cage.

however if it makes you uncomfortable about this guy then don't vote for him. that is your right and your decision alone.

Meh... I saw it too. It was fiction. It wasn't a personal memoir or anything so whatever. It'll probably have an effect on the election... once people recover and get the context it'll probably bite Allen in the butt.

Yeah, I just read the context. I'm over it. In context, it seemed like Webb himself was uncomfortable with the fictional situation.

Drudge is a sheister. I should learn not to ever take his headlines at their word. But they're just so big! I have to believe them.

I feel bad for the people in VA, they have to choose between someone who writes about incestuous pedophilia and a racist.
