Secondary was hella fun to shoot.

I didn't have a chance to do anything worthwhile with the Primary, so mine blows. It just went in to pad the numbers ;)

submission #1 - nice. I have a Norman 6 string that I picked up in Kingston, ON. It's the best <$1k acoustic I've played so far and it only cost me a whopping $250 (got it when the exchange rates were better for the US). Godin puts together some quality guitars.

Those pics are making me want to dust off my camera and start shooting again.

It would be nice to get some more discussion going about the pics. Not sure of the best way to do that tho...

Guys, how about a mailing list to let people know when the next round opens and closes? Everytime i get reminded of this thread it's always a day or two after the submissions close.

Just a thought.

p.s. how about "expanding" the rules a bit to cover photos not necessary shot during a particular month?

p.p.s. I'll even donate a domain and hosting if anyone wants to make the thing a bit more "official".

Allowing shots taken outside the contest period I think goes against the point of these contests, which is to get people out and shooting, and to generate genuinely new content each month.

Your other suggestions have merit, we can probably work something out (perhaps people subscribe to my thread in OT, then either myself (or anyone, really) can bump it with new info ...)

I agree about expanding the time period.. it's counterproductive to the goal (as much as I would love to submit something older :)).

As for reminders... I don't think a new site is needed. This is an AT contest, it belongs here. A mailing list might not be a bad idea. Keep it advertised in our sigs.. and maybe every other month bump a reminder (as the new contests start).

I guess it's dependent on the photographer. I tend to do my shoots in themes, and once i get in that mindset i get stuck on it. Think of it as "being in the zone". I've got at least a couple of shots from past subjects that would have been a good entry but didn't quality for this particular reason.

As for the "site", i was just offering whatever domain you guys wanted to get a mailing list working, whether or not the "www" side of it is used, is all up to the group. Just a thought :)

i'd be all about discussing the pics, but then people would suspect that you're touting your own pic which could ruin the anonymity of the contest.

It would have to be post-voting close I think, for precisely that reason.

I think that would be good as well.

I had way more fun shooting the secondary theme as well and will post a thread with the link later. This was one of the big reasons why I wanted a dSLR and finally getting decent at it with my new equipment!

How about doing a motion theme for the Nov contest?

If everyone would like, they could always subscribe to the new contest thread at the beginning of every month, then we can all make an honest effort to post to it regularly so you will get updates. Unless someone wants to set this up on their own time and manage the mailing list themselves, then feel free.

As for expanding the rules to allow any pictures taken at any time, someone else already covered this. The main reason for this is to hopefully get people out and using their cameras. It also will hopefully get people to try some different things that they normally wouldn't be doing with their camera.

A domain and host wouldn't be necessary IMO, but thanks a lot for the suggestion and offer! Like someone else already said, moving it outside of these forums would negate the core audience of the contest itself. It's a simple, prize-free contest, might as well keep it simple. DrPizza is kind enough to sticky the contest thread every month, I think that's enough. Besides, the contest grows a little bit every month!

I agree, but I've only seen one month where we discussed the pictures. It usually dies quickly after being unstickied. I think it's a simple issue of keeping the old contest thread alive if you'd like to discuss the pics.

Sounds good to me, although I see that as more of a secondary theme. Any suggestions for a primary theme for November now that we've got the secondary taken care of? Maybe just a general "fall" theme?

I've touched on this before, but remember at least a few of us aren't from the northern hemisphere, and not only is it not autumn, we don't even have native deciduous trees

Not that I wish to prevent you from doing an autumn theme, I love seeing autumn colours (we don't get them :()...

I've offered some comments below :)

Entirely my opinions, so likely full of sh1t

October 2007 Primary Gallery - "Patterns" - Voting Results

* Submission 1 - jmagg: I enjoyed this pic, dark, kinda brooding, but perhaps not quite enough pattern...

* Submission 2 - davestar: Awesome pic, neat pattern, very interesting shot (if you must know, it kinda reminded me of HL2 (I could imagine Combine troops charging down shooting at you)

* Submission 3 - CorkyG: Nice pattern, crisp, razor sharp shot, but perhaps a little one dimensional...if that makes sense?

* Submission 4 - quackagator: I saw a tortoise! I think this would have worked best with a closeup of the shell, the scrub around it is a bit distracting for my liking.

* Submission 5 - Brainonska511: Awesome building, the chandeliers break up the funky roof vaulting tho...

* Submission 6 - Zenmervolt: Fantastic shot (love the composition and sharpness), but not enough pattern for the theme, imho...

* Submission 7 - murban135: Like quackagators, I think the surroundings detract from it (beautiful ice crystals then...mud ;))

* Submission 8 - randomlinh: It's a radiator of some variety, showing off the concept of DOF very nicely...technically interesting, but not really my cup of tea ;)

* Submission 9 - skulkingghost: Lovely light, great silhouettes, but not masses of patterns...

* Submission 10 - dug777: utter crap.

* Submission 11 - Jawo: Interesting, but too drab and grey for me

October 2007 Secondary Gallery - "Long Exposure" - Voting Results

* Submission 1 - davestar: Makes me thirsty, but I'm not seeing the topic in this shot...? lack of exif info doesn't help there ;)

* Submission 2 - skulkingghost: Very cool! I love fireworks shots :)

* Submission 3 - Brainonska511: Needs more DOF, background is too distracting...

* Submission 4 - magomago: Crazy ISO! I suppose it is a long exposure when you take that into account...interesting pic (how close were you to the firefront?).

* Submission 5 - jmagg: Looks like an oil painting...

* Submission 6 - dug777: Idiot forgot to take off the UV filter. Would have been cooler with a bit more traffic.

* Submission 7 - Jawo: Cool, but I'm still not sure what it is?

I dont know about that. The northern states may have a slight advantage on this one, LOL. The flora around here still looks like late summer.

Panasonic DMC-TZ3
2.5 seconds
ISO 100
f/3.3

Someone with a DSLR would probably have snapped the same pic with ISO800-1600 and an appropriately short shutter speed, but to get a clean pic I had to go low ISO/long exposure.

I thought that Brainonska511's library would take the primary contest and if I was going to win one, it would be the secondary. (Don't mean to disperage your submission dug!)

If anyone was curious, the locations for my pics:

Gallery 1 - Steps leading up to Bratislava Castle
Gallery 2 - Old Jewish Quarter in Budapest

thanks for the votes

Congrats to the winners.

My "Patterns" vote went to Zemmervolt, and my choice for "Long Exposure" went to davestar.

The long exposure I took is of a chrome litho reproduction of an oil painting. A thoroughly lame attempt at long exposure, but a little tasteful nudity never hurts.

The lighting on the guitar was a SB600 bounced off the ceiling.

I was going to submitt a pic very similar to the library one, bu then didn't want to duplicate, so submitted a picture from my apple picking. Its woodpecker holes in an apple tree. The long exposure is of the Vietnam Vetrans Memorial, looking towards Constitution Ave. Other pictures taken the same night: DC at Night. I had some crazy results, since I was getting movement when I used a tripod, lens lockup, and remote release. Only thing I could think of was the IS was getting in the way.....

Critique away on my pics (and other flickr pics).
