Warner Bros has firmed an October start date in New York for Ocean’s Eight, the female-driven caper spinoff directed by Gary Ross, and the studio is closing with its principal cast. Aside from the previously identified Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, deals are close with Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter, Mindy Kaling and Awkwafina. The latter is the hip-hop moniker of Asian-American rapper and actress Nora Lum, who most recently had a role in Neighbors 2.

First Ghostbusters, now this.

How many tokens will they have? Do they have the proper mixture of ethnicity?
Have they found the hispanic character yet? Who will be the primary jew character?
Who will be playing the flamboyant gay character?

Which white man will be playing the villian?

They need to get this worked out so they can redo Platoon with an all female cast. Maybe a reimagined Beverly hills cop where its Leslie Jones and random SNL cast mats as leads.

Take any movie done in the past 20 years that did ok in the theater and just re-write the script for female actors.
I'm looking forward to James Bond, where its some 4'9 80 lb actress playing James Bond beating up 6'9 350lb men while drinking a Cosmo....stirred, not shaken.

It could use a Bette Midler/Meryl Streep/Judi Dench to give it that extra gravitas, that cast just seems a little lightweight (except the G.O.A.T. Rihanna of course).

You missed the female Hannibal Lector, Rambo, Mr Doubtfire & of course the female Frodo.

You act like that's worse than the way they've been remaking stuff. But yeah, Jason Bourne and Bond are so realistic, having a woman do that would just completely ruin the realism!

I don't care if it's a female or male cast so long as it's good.

Ghostbusters wasn't.
Yep, because...
It sounds terrible and gimmicky.

If the only reason for a movie's existence is to show the light of day to someone's gender bender fanfic, that movie does not need to exist. If they have a promising script that just happens to call for a primarily female cast then that is something else entirely.

Bullock and Blanchett are pretty awesome, so are Hathaway and H B-C. Mindy Kaling is hilarious.

I would watch the fuck out of this movie, provided the heavy hitters are motivated enough artistically and get enough screen time and good writing that they "carry" the weaker actors instead of phoning it in.

Producing, writing, and directing are important.

Filmmakers are free to gender-flip, race-blind cast, and/or remake whatever movies they want. It might have weirded me out as a kid, but I spent enough time around theater in high school and college that I get why they do it.

Who plays the role isn't the issue.
The issue seems to be a lack of quality scripts out there and a lack of fresh ideas.

Why pay some douchebag for an original screenplay when you can dust off property you already own?
You can't just remake it you gotta remake it with whatever seems to be trending added into the script.
Right now "women as all the things" seems to be testing well in research...or at least that is what the interns say.

I'm waiting for the Titanic remake where the rich guy lets the poor girl die at the end. "Sorry baby, it was fun but I gotta get back to my real life."

I'm all for more female roles, but can't they do something original? I really hope we don't just get a decade of hollywood rehashing previous movies (yet again) but replacing the male with a female. We already have enough remakes/reboots as it is. Someone create something original for the love of god.

I thought I covered that with "gender bender fanfics". Fan fiction is by definition derivative and almost exclusively terrible.

Yeah it sounds like they just picked a bunch of women that happen to be famous right now as opposed to good actors who might make a decent film.

What the heck is an Awkwafina?

I am going to be staying far far away from this film.

i look forward to the day when women go to war and men go to clubs without any money in their purses.
