I'm all for more female roles, but can't they do something original? I really hope we don't just get a decade of hollywood rehashing previous movies (yet again) but replacing the male with a female. We already have enough remakes/reboots as it is. Someone create something original for the love of god.
Next it will be a remake of Back to the Future with a female Marty and a female Doc.

female Marty will be played by Miley Cyrus and female Doc will be played by Meryl Streep.

related article on the new Star Trek show they are doing and casting decisions
http://www.ew.com/article/2016/08/10/star-trek-tv-series

ST has always been doing this. I can't really think of a cast that wasn't diverse all the way back to the OG series.

I don't really care much about the casting as I dislike the redoing of the same old same old. I'd prefer it if they released it as a new movie rather than a "reboot" with the same title. It's so far away from the original that I doubt anyone would notice or care. Doing it this way makes it feel like cheap publicity by triggering idiots.

Counterpoint: there are no original stories anymore. Regardless of title, they're all remakes or retellings of the same old tired cliches. Whether they share a title or not.

Also, that formulaic recycled garbage SELLS. The average moviegoer LIKES seeing the same old story hashed and rehashed for their entertainment.

I agree if you boil it all down, it's the same stories told again and again with new skins. If we're going by that, then there's nothing to say as there will never be anything new. If we're talking about reboots vs new IPs, then I don't think that the average movie goer so much likes it as there's not much other choice. New IPs like Deadpool killed at the box office this year vs reboots having so so results. I could be wrong, but it seems that people want new (even if it's just the characters and backdrop) and not reboot after reboot. I get why the studios don't want to risk it, but I keep reading that every year sales are down.

Agreed, his argument doesn't work any more than this does: "I'm going to give you every document ever written in English. abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz. Everything else is just a rehashing of that, so you're not missing anything if you never read anything again."

Yeah it sounds like they just picked a bunch of women that happen to be famous right now as opposed to good actors who might make a decent film.

I'm not saying you're wrong but...

Bullock, Blanchett, Hathaway and Carter have four Oscar wins and nine nominations among them

If you don't understand the gulf between that absurdity and boring, formulaic storywriting, I pity you.

I can't wait to see all of the GamerGate warriors go berserk about this.

They still exist? I shouldn't be surprised but I would have figured both sides of that stupidity would have gone away by now. I haven't looked in a long while, but I thought the guy posting 10,000 pictures and links in the post in P&N stopped a long time ago.
