Zebo, have you tried DXTweaker? It enables triple buffering for D3D so the fps hit isn't nearly as bad with vsync turned on. However the program is still a bit buggy and the game crashes sometimes when fast traveling.

At 1920x1200 with 4xAAA and 16xHQAF, the game is playable for me with the occasional slide show. I think anything above 30fps is plenty fine for such games. I'll turn it down to 2xAAA this weekend and see how that works.
Now, how do I get a damn horse!? walking sucks......

How are you getting 30 fps average at those settings? In outside areas with lots of vegetation I'm getting about 30 fps, but it often dips into the 20's, and that's at 1027x768 resolution. This is on x1900xt, 2.4ghz opteron 165, 1 gig mem. I have most of the sliders at or near the max, shadow filtering off, grass shadows off, vsync off, everyting else on. I feel like at those settings I should not be getting such low fps. I'm using cat 6.2 drivers, should I update? WTH is wrong with this game?

I made a mistake, turns out that my AF was set to application controlled so I manually forced it which gave me a hit so I had to drop my AA down to 2. Are you using HDR or bloom? HDR was a huge hit on my system.
I have my catalyst set to advanced and my card OC'd to 700/800. My FX-53 is also running at 2.8 but I'm not sure if this game is CPU dependant.
Oh, I'm using the LOD texture replacement and have my ugridlines set to 5(default). The high res textures do the same without the huge FPS hit. Give them a try. For sure, I'd get 6.3's unless you have some major bugs with your games in 6.3's. The only times my FPS drops a lot of when fighting in thick vegetation which, so far, have been very rare and usually only a single enemy. Most of the fighting I've done has been in caves/arena/underground which already has plenty high fps.
Also, people have been complaining about load time stutter but I don't have that. The sign "loading new area" comes up but my character never pauses or lags. I allocated 512mb's of RAM to the game and did a full defrag after installation. Also, I have nothing ever opened in the background when playing games, including AV/AS.

Ok Joker I finally tried DXTweaker .. while correcting frame rate almost back to where it ws with vsync off, it still has typical vsync lag... like when you move mouse back and forth it's not instant feedback on screen. Much worse with Setting "render ahead" @ 3 than 0 but it's there no matter what. I going back to vsync off - I can deal with tearing before I can deal with any kind of lag.

You've specified 512mb of RAM to the game? How so?
And about the horses. You can buy them at almost any of the stables located outside of the cities. Cheydinhal and Chorral are the first that come to mind. You can always borrow one of the Prior's horses at Weynon Priory, though.

Oh! I'm dumb. I used that tweak in my .ini file and didn't know what it did.
If I have 1GB of RAM, should I only devote 512mb?
I also, I hear the resolutions are scalable. As in, if I want to use a 16:10 ratio, it doesnt HAVE to be 1680x1050. Does anyone know how to lower the resolution and maintain this ratio?
Yeah, sometimes I prefer to run, too. Athletics is one of my major skills, so it always helps if I wanted to level up faster (which I don't... using vehems? leveling mod and slow leveling).
52428800 is 50 MB, if you want 500 MB you need to add another zero.Originally posted by: RobertR1

I noticed the lag as well but only with the menu. In the game itself I didn't have any lag but this might be because we're using two different cards + drivers.

Why would you want SM 3.0? It was a gimmick then it's a gimmick
now plus it crashes the game.

You do have lag thats the way vsync works renders behind a tad according to things I've read. you can try it yourself w and w/o vsync even though it's subbtle difference even with all the vsync tweaks applied it's noticeable. Also screen movement is blurrier with vsync applied from testing I've done - don't know why that is.
