Does anyone think its possible that MS gave Bethesda a bit of encouragement to make the PC version look significantly inferior to the console one? Even with the ini tweaks, it appears that it has a long way to go before it reaches parity. I'm curious if we are going to see something comparable from GRAW on the PC.

You still haven't offered up any proof to suggest the PC version looks any worse than the 360 version. These are shots I took earlier while playing today, show me how they look worse than a comparable 360 shot:

All settings are maxed out (except no self shadows), HDR + 8xAF. I average around 25-35 fps outside and 60+ inside.

yeah, i did all, or alot of the tweaks listed and it brought me down to 20-30 fps outdoors but it is very playable.

it is pretty ridiculous all these tweaks need to be made in the first place though.

its a great game nonetheless.

It seems the game is CPU limited in my case... I have an Athlon 64 3500+ @ 2.53 Ghz and if I disable AA or AF, I get no increase in frame rate. Basically, I am normally at 60 solid, but in certain places it drops as low as 30. I never seen it go below 30 yet... Ben on the horse and it rides great. Beautiful game, very large game... I am overwhelmed at this point in the game.

360 running Oblivion.

BTW Joker- it looks like your in game gamma is cranked way too high- your screenshots look particularly poor even when compared to the rest of the PC shots I've seen. Also- since your rig is incapable of running HDR+AA for Oblivion ATM it would serve your point better to pick areas that show off HDR in action instead of simply pushing the fact that you are playing with serious aliasing issues going on.

Gamma wasn't changed at all..wtf? You sure you don't have a screwy monitor?

Edit: Watched the videos, that looks worse than the PC version. Doesn't even look like the 360 version has any AF turned on.

The in game brightness adjusts gamma- in the church screenshot in particular the scene looks very washed out- like the gamma is pushed too high.

No, to double check I went to the official website and compared some of their screenies to yours back to back- your gamma is bumped considerably from theirs. It may be how your monitor or driver is set for 3D, I'm not sure- but you are losing a lot of contrast in interior scenes with it set the way it is.

Edit: Watched the videos, that looks worse than the PC version.

Then perhaps you can post some actual screenshots then? Because the ones you have posted look more Morrowind then Oblivion.

Doesn't even look like the 360 version has any AF turned on.

Only one of your screens gives the appearance of having any AF either(appears to be either 4x or 8x)- and it is angle dependant too. I thought you didn't like that?

What if you set "grids" to 500? Does it look better? I have never seen anything look so horrible at default settings. What were they thinking (sharp trees next to blurry terrain)? I just can't get over how bad it looks compared to anything else out there. (I don't feel like I'm exaggerating that.) 11 grids with 4xAA looks decent and almost on-par. It doesn't look like high gamma to me, just HDR gone horribly wrong.

Disable VSync. If you have it enabled and your monitor's refresh rate is 60, it will lock at 60, or if it can't run 60 it will lock at 30. This is why I always disable VSync in every game. Tearing? I have no idea what people are talking about. Why play a game at 30 fps when it could be 50?

I don't like the way the stones look on the left side of the 3rd screenshot. I thought maybe I did a tweak wrong or something but I guess they look like that for everyone.

Made a FRAPS video while playing the game. I didn't try to capture any special HDR effects, just played the game normally with 16xAF and effects at max. Video was encoded using the Xvid codec. The indoors video uses less compression than the outdoors one:

Outdoors Video X1900 XTX (~80 MB)
Indoors Video X1900 XTX (~22 MB)
Fight Against An Ogre (~38 MB)

Settings: 1680x1050 16xAF all settings maxed (except self shadows) + HDR. Ben FYI the brightness settings are on default for the game and the driver. I'd recommend using a download accelerator.

Get the xvid codec here: http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

what resolution r u gaming at?
i'm running 1680 x 1050

and i think the game's not really cpu dependent
in your case, dropping as low as 30 doesn't mean your cpu limited
it's more like GPU limited to me

Very beatiful game. I know now why it takes them so long.

Just imagine coding all of it and puting it all together, making sure things fit, making all the values and upgrades. That doesnt even take into effect the graphics and voice acting or physics.

In the extra's DVD they say they planned the game to run on hardware that didnt even exsist yet, back in mid 2002. Its such an amazing game. My vote for GOTY. I just hope its recognized for GOTY by some major gaming site/magazine, and its not just me.

Very nice vids, Joker. Makes me want to jump all over that XTX at Monarch in your sig, because my SLI 6800GTs are sucking wind trying to keep up in this game. <devil on shoulder> if I sold them on FST/FT, it'd only be like $130 out-of-pocket after rebates....

Thanks just added a new one with combat in it: Fight Against An Ogre (~38 MB) I'd highly recommend you going for that XTX in my sig, it's a great deal and the card runs this game very well.

5150Joker,

Thanks for the video and information about your settings and FPS. I watched your Outdoors Video and used FRAPS to capture approximately the same sequence as you did with my system. I used FRAPS to capture a benchmark and here are the results:

ATI X1900XTX Settings:
Overclock:670/795 ? Stock Cooler
CCC ? Application Specific
AF ? High Quality 16X via CCC
Game Settings:
Graphics ? All Max
Resolution: 1600x1200
HDR - On
V.Snyc - On
Distant Landscape - On
Distant Buildings - On
Distant Trees - On
Fullscreen
AA - Off
Self Shadow - Off

Frames Captured: 4646
Time(ms): 114903
Min:29 FPS
Max:55 FPS
Avg:40.434 FPS

I have not touched the .ini file or done any custom modifications to the game. I think the game looks and runs incredible! Thanks again for the videos?makes me wanna register my copy of FRAPS..:)

Nice, you should try out these ini tweaks they work really well: http://www.shacknews.com/ja.zz?id=11842902

DISCLAIMER: Use at your own risk. Back up your Oblivion.ini first. Please do not request official troubleshooting support with any changes to your .ini file. Consider these to be just from a fan playing the game. You guys are smart and know all this, just cma again

Here are some tweaks I play with:

uGridDistantTreeRange=15
raise to increase area in which LOD tree billboards are drawn - looks quite nice doubled if your comp. can take it

uGridDistantCount=25
raise to increase the number of LOD tree billboards drawn - looks quite nice doubled if your comp. can take it

uGridsToLoad=5
raise to increase the X/Y dimension of the number of high detail exterior cells loaded - should be an odd number, 3 or greater. This is quite a performance hit with anything above 5. If there are 25 cells loaded at a time with a value of 5, then there are 49 cells loaded with a value of 7 and so on. I would not recommend going above 7 or 9, but terrain looks nicer if your comp can take it

bAllowScreenShot=0
set to 1 to allow the PrintScreen key to take screenshots

bFull Screen=1
0 = windowed, 1 = fullscreen

iSize W=640
iSize H=480
current screen resolution

bUseWaterReflectionsMisc=0
bUseWaterReflectionsStatics=0
bUseWaterReflectionsTrees=0
bUseWaterReflectionsActors=0
set these to 1 to allow these kinds of objects to reflect in water

fDlgFocus=2.1000
raise to pull camera back some in dialogue - I use a value of 4 or so

bForceFullLOD=0
a value of 1 forces foreground trees to always render at the highest detail - I haven't found this to be a huge performance hit for the visual benefit, your mileage may very

iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure=2
raise to allow more unique grass types per terrain texture - 4 should be enough to let you see everything possible
