Obama's bus was made in Canada... how sad is that

There is no one better at customizable conversions than Prevost. They've been at it a lot of years. This was no shock to me as someone familiar with them it's the first company I thought of when I saw the bus the first time.

It is sad indeed. But at least it's Canada and not China. As Engineer notes, both parties are pushing jobs out of the country as quickly as possible.

Yeah but nobody is shipping them out as fast as the Republicans and their Masters all the while denigrating American Workers every chance they get.

So Obama is on a nationwide bus trip in a bus made in Canada.

Sad that we don't have a company here that makes these things. Or that we don't make nice enough ones for them to buy and convert...

If the market will not support multiple companies, then there is nothing that can be done. Run a business at a loss?

Apparently there are at least 4 manufacturers of the luxury coaches

I wonder if the government put it out for bids? It was purchased on Obama's watch

BTW, here's a clue: Making cars and buses in Canada makes more sense because they have universal healthcare. You know, that socialist thing you hate.

This is true. Socializing medicine gives companies a competitive advantage with companies around the world.

I know a oscar winning sound designer here in LA who's company loses jobs to New Zealand because of this very thing. He has to provide medical and the companies there dont.

I'd say the Democrats match them job for job, for different reasons. Republicans want to maximize economic freedom and therefore profit. Democrats want to punish the resource owners and redistribute the wealth produced. So both parties enact policies that not only drive jobs out of our country, but often even directly reward moving them - such as grants to subsidize foreign factories that often (usually?) end up replacing American factories.

But the Prevost is the best riding, best driving of the lot. Van Hool's are the worst. The other two I've never seen used by entertainers.

Van Hool is not a US company and Thomas probably wasn't an option if he didn't want to tool around in a prison bus. Stallion might have been doable but it doesn't look like they specialize in the kind of mods that the VIPs need.

The one US company making them, Country Coach, went Chapter 7 last year.

ProJo??? ProJo???

Eh, so they basically bought the working parts of the bus then shipped it down here and had it outfitted by an American company where half the cost went. Big deal really, the Secret Service orders what it feels is necessary for the occasion, not what gives joe bob a job. Considering the 2nd bus is for the other candidate guess they will face the same 'issue'.

Here's the Queen of Englands ride

al Q can't touch that

MCI?

John Madden uses them.

Would be sad to learn that he could have built this in the US and didn't. Would need more details.

I just thought it was a case where we had no choice, which is why I said it was sad. But now who knows. Perhaps the SS were told to get Prevost and they took that advice.

PS. I don't blame this on Obama. Obama would have to actually make a decision before we can blame him for it.

MCI & Bluebird also make quality coaches, although they're oriented more towards the public sector market & a more standardized design. I worked on transit & intercity coaches for 17 years.

Prevost is the Rolls Royce of coach makers- you can have it your way, & if you need to ask the price, you can't afford it.

MCI has an assembly plant in the US but the parts are made in Canada.

Dodge did that commercial with the Challenger and George Washington driving into the British. The Challenger is built (assembled) in Canada (somewhere near Toronto iirc).

+1 to who cares?

Prof John, you should know by now that no matter what you post, no matter how true it is or how much sense it makes, the usual suspects are going to pounce on you.

A natural response to any intelligent person that sees a partisan hack.

Many 'domestic' vehicles are made in Canada. I don't see the outrage here. It isn't like it is from Germany, Japan, China, or some former Soviet country. Canada is too related and intertwined with the US culturally, economically, and geographically.

I wonder what kind of bus that Palin is running around in. What about the actual Republican primary candidates? Somehow I don't think they are running around in GM Futurliners.
