Obama's bus was made in Canada... how sad is that

If the market will not support multiple companies, then there is nothing that can be done. Run a business at a loss?

Were you similarly outraged when President Bush rode around in a bus not manufactured in America?

And also: Several industry sources speculated that Hemphill may have installed an American-made engine, such as a Detroit Diesel, in the presidential bus, though that could not be immediately confirmed.

BTW, here's a clue: Making cars and buses in Canada makes more sense because they have universal healthcare. You know, that socialist thing you hate.

So Obama is on a nationwide bus trip in a bus made in Canada.

Sad that we don't have a company here that makes these things. Or that we don't make nice enough ones for them to buy and convert...

I am not raging about anything.

Notice I don't criticize Obama for this. I doubt he was even in on it.

I just think it is sad that we don't offer a product that can compete with this Canadian bus. Or maybe we do, but they aren't as nice...

I do know that Prevost busses are among the nicest in the world.

Besides... it is ironic that the President is on a jobs tour in a foreign made bus...

And if the Obama administration hadn't bailed out the auto industry even more automotive transportation devices wouldn't be getting made in the US. I'm glad to see you've recognized the need of the bailouts and how Obama made the right decision. You're learning to accept and that's the first step.

Probably could make the bus, but not after suffering a decade of the right wing's race to the bottom policies. The Americans who could make the bus had their jobs sent out of the country for slave labor. Owner got theirs and sold out fucking everyone else out of a job. Now the guy who could make the bus works at Walmart handing out fishing licenses just to make it to 65.

hehe

I think you guys are being a little unfair to pj. I know he's made some bad topics before but this is pretty benign.

And I agree that it's lamentable that the US can't make a bus for its own pres. Where I suspect PJ and i would disagree is how exactly the problem of losing manufacturing should be remedied 😉

You know what is really sad...

You guys outrage against me is more than my outrage about this story...

Prof John, you should know by now that no matter what you post, no matter how true it is or how much sense it makes, the usual suspects are going to pounce on you.

You and your heroes shipped all the Companies and jobs out of the U.S. that used to do this so why are you complaining now?

PJ: The Secret service bought the bus, not Obama. NPR had an interest bit on the bus a few days ago-they mentioned that in the past when the president needed a bus, they would rent one, retrofit it with armor, etc., then when the lease was up have to tear all that stuff out. They had a former head of the secret service on saying this is cheaper and should have been done a long time ago.

As far as the bus being built in Canada, it's pretty much a given that if this was a political decision it would have been built in the US, and probably by GM. Given the nature of presidential vehicles, I'm sure this was a very specialized vehicle with very demanding specs and I bet there are very few companies in the world that build such things.

BTW, except in the Southpark world, Canada is one of our closest allies.

Dave, you know that both sides are rushing to the so called free trade acts as fast as they can. Neither side gives a shit other than making it easier to ship jobs out.

IIRC, GM's motor coach plant was actually always in Canada and it got sold to MCI a while back.

Edit: actually looks like US production did take place in Pontiac but was done by the mid-70s.

Maybe it's because in Canada they can actually spell BUS.

I'm usually not a spelling Nazi, but come on its a friggin three letter first grade word

I have already said that the bailouts worked and were a good decision.

I question the way they were done and how bond holders were screwed while the unions were saved, but overall we saved a lot of jobs for very little money compared to other government programs.
