Obamacare was too late to help me.

As some of you know I had a heart attack a couple of months ago. I had a stent put in and I am fine now.

I just got the bill from the hospital. I have a small business and I did some extensive research looking at any and all of the associations I could join that offered health insurance. As a former health insurance exec I probably knew a lot more than most people and feel I selected the best one. It cost me 700 per month at my age, middle fifties.

Well, the bill came and the part that the health insurance didn't cover was a little over 11,000 dollars. I just wrote them a check.

Unfortunately for me that money was going to buy a car since my old one has too many problems to keep on the road. Bye, bye car.

Since I can no longer make service calls I have had a severe loss of income. NOW I am eligible for a health plan that is run by my liberal state. Of course, if my income goes back up I will be kicked off the plan.

So, I have cut my hours back and now will not be paying taxes this year and instead will be getting government benefits.

If only Obamacare had come sooner I could still be working full time and be a productive member of society. Sadly, the 10 or so not for profits I serviced for very low fees will now have to find services elsewhere. About 10-20 businesses will have to try and find a new computer services company. Unfortunately for them I am the only company within 20 miles. A service call starts at 200 bucks for them to come to my town.

The Chamber of Commerce even called me. They said that the booklet they produce every year for prospective businesses will no longer have a computer services company and was there anything I could do. I told them no.

I don't think you made a good choice. $700 a month for something that still left you with $11,000.

I still don't understand how not having Obamacare is keeping you from working full time?

Its the lack of Obamacare. If I work full time I can't afford health insurance.

Earth to Matt, if he did not pay the $700/mo. his out of pocket bill would probably be more like $110,000 or greater. I think our OP could quantify things better as I am basically just guessing.

Wow, that was some bad coverage. I pay $180/month for a family plan, my max out of pocket is $2,000 individual/$4,000 family. My insurance carrier is Blue Cross - Blue Shield

Actually use it once and see what happens...

Unless it is through an employer in which case yeah sure you pay $180 and the company pays many times that.

So now you are turning down business so you make less money and qualify for Medicaid?

Actually its a subsidized insurance program for low income people that is in place temporarily until we go to a single payer universal health care plan.

And yes I am turning down some business. I have lost even more by not having a car.

You had to pay that bill immediately before buying a car?

Seems like the lost business would have paid for both. Espeically if it was a cheap / used car. You already lost more than you needed to pay for one.

I never supported Obamacare but seeing how much the Brits love their universal healthcare certainly gave me pause to reconsider. Stories like this also push me towards thinking that privatized healthcare is a dinosaur. That said, I am still on the fence on this issue.

Yeah, I pay my bills on time. I also have a revolving line of credit for my business I don't want to lose. Plus a decent credit rating.

But to my understanding he would not have paid $11,000 out of pocket. It would all be covered.

Under Obamacare my rates would have gone down. Plus I might have received a subsidy to help pay for it. Most importantly much more of the bill would have been covered.

Sounds like two problems.

First you took a gamble at $700 per month and lost.

Next, due to governmental interference in the private sector you are now trapped in a vise you should have known was just waiting for you.

This is all your fault and those greedy Democrats you keep voting for over the years.

I hope you are fully recovered. Good luck in the future....watch that diet and exercise.

Too bad you didn't have Afflac. They would have provided 10,000 I believe. I am currently considering using them for my wife and I.

Its as I suspected. Some people here that are younger hang here to much to be productive . It also explains why there are so many liberals in this forum. Government help my ass . We the Peoples money is not the governments . Sorry about your heart attack but many many people have problems that they overcome on their own 2 feet

Your complaint basically amounts to you wish the rest of us were paying more of your health insurance and medical bills via taxpayer subsidy, despite the fact that you can afford them. And yet those of us who oppose obamacare are the selfish ones.

Would you still be saying the same thing if it turned out that the average rate went down for the same quality of care?
