What about people with genetically superior health traits? Should they have to pay less because of their genetic makeup? Won't that slippery-slope eventually lead to a tax on the less genetically fortunate? Remember GATTACA? Do we want to live in a world like that? Sounds like a nazi's wet dream.

I'm genetically pretty well off. I'm good for this.

Heehee trooollllingggggg. It has such terrible consequences to go down this path not that people aren't dumb enough to actually believe in it and vote for it then suddenly realize its their own rates going up LOOOOL.

I am though I could use a break in these difficult times. Do it if ya bad.

As somebody who's likely to live into the 90s/100s going by family on both sides, why should I pay to subsidize other people's crappy genes?

I've got several issues with ACA but this is one thing they have right.

if the insurance companies could figure out how to do it they would.

Seriously? Are you equating the choice of smoking with genetics?

Well if they price everything on risk and charge smokers more, why not charge the genetically superior less?

Does it...gasp... not go both ways?

Yes, it literally could go any way. We as a society, however, don't discriminate (yet) on the basis of genetics as we currently do in lifestyle choices. So quite frankly it's a completely theoretical argument, so, in reality, to answer your question.. no, it doesn't. (because we live in current reality) To make the comparison is just silly, we could make "slippery slope" arguments ad infinitum.

Should we measure everyone's eyesight so we could better risk stratify car insurance? Night vision? etc. etc. etc.

Why is this a problem?

Is there a penalty on fatties, too? are states with exchanges charging a 75% tax on every fatty-making big gulp that is sold? God damn, I sure hope so.

Choice only factors into one of those situations. Very easy to see that you can't compare the two, and can easily economize one of them.

Eventually. The progressive vision for America will necessitate total control over the citizenry.

Really? Republicans are the ones insisting on trans vaginal probes.
Drug testing? pushed by Republicans.
Drunk driving checkpoints-pushed by Republicans.

Actually the Obama administration actively supports sleeping around. I think the intended message is that birth control is subsidized, but the wink and nod message is that HIV and hepatitis treatment is subsidized.

The irony of course being that liberals threw a huge fit when Rush Limbaugh said Obamacare was subsidizing women's slutting around.

Yeah those dirty whores, but the men who nail them they are studs.....

I think that is what Limbaugh was being slammed for. Ironic since you're constantly attempting to whine about double standards on here.

So is the same gonna be done with people who drink..

Not equivalents. RR for smoking is far more clear cut and isolated. I would also have no problems with plans that incentivize cholesterol goals, weight goals, hell even STD goals. Should people with less risk not pay less for insurance?

I favor incentives. Which should take into account things like smoking which we can't quantify it's damages over time really. But drinking, we know if it causes problems based on your liver functions.

But absolutely, people who are overweight should be given ways to fix the problem and get cheaper insurance, or should accept that they are overweight and pay more. Overweight of course taking into account how much of your weight is from fat, not just a simple BMI.

How do you propose implementing this system? "Smoker" is a pretty easy checkbox to include on an insurance form; "Body fat percentage" requires an actual test be performed. Should everyone have to undergo a complete physical prior to being accepted for an insurance plan?

And this isn't a question that wasn't already being asked well before the ACA?

Hell, don't they ask that when getting homeowner's insurance?

Sure. I'm all for forcing things to be done for insurance. High risk people should pay more. I pay more doing things like hiking, playing squash, volleyball, lifting, snowboarding and such. Things that keep me in shape. If someone wants to sit around and NOT stay in shape, fine. But I don't want to pay for their poor choices.

I'm no so much for forcing insurance, though.

Really? Which liver function tests and what is the relationship with the amount of drinking? Are there any confounders?
