The United States has a vital national security interest in addressing the current and potential security threats posed by extremists in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Therefore, the core goal of the U.S. must be to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat al Qaeda and its safe havens in Pakistan, and to prevent their return to Pakistan or Afghanistan.

With a goal like that, against a dynamic "enemy", maybe what he means is after 3 years we go after Pak? After all its of national security interest.

Ordinarily I think stating an ending date in advance is insane - it just tells the opposition "Hey, just keep fighting til this date and you automatically win!" But in this case it might possibly make sense. It gives the anti-Taliban forces an ultimatum they can't ignore - either build your forces strong enough to defeat the Taliban and associated foreign terrorists by this date, or face being butchered when they retake your country. If after three years they aren't that strong but are making progress, he can always postpone complete pullout.

Time for Afghanistan and their people to rise up and meet the challenge.

And besides --- reducing troop strength in Iraq and Afghanistan to 30k by 2011 will knock $1 trillion plus interest off the Federal debt over the next ten years.

If the Party of No has any thing positive to add moving forward, let's boogie. Otherwise, get the Hell out of the way and let the adults govern.

Nothing says 'sacrifice your people for our common goal' to tribal leaders like saying, Resist the Taliban/AQ (who are there permanently) and we'll support you...but only for a while. I bet that message sits really well with tribal leaders out there alone in their areas.

Stop deflecting to the bu bu bu but Bush mantra. The Dem's have had control of Congress for 2 years now, and since Obama was elected, total control of the government. There is no Rep.'s "getting in the way", "the adults" as you put it,are governing. If you don't like the current policies, then you need to hold these "adults" accountable.

The USA and the world tried that after the Soviet Union left. They left Afghanistan to be governed by the Muslims. That gave us the Taliban, harboring of Al Qaeda, and resulted in 9/11.

Yes, I do as a matter of fact. Not only did we F over Afghanistan back in the day, mainly to further our own goals re: USSR, but when you go to war you go to win. Not F'ing half@ss it like 99% of the US population wants to do. Sorry, but war is bad and expensive. I'm sorry if that means a war tax needs to happen, which results in you only being able to afford 4 tripple mocha choco latte's a week instead of the 5 + scone's you usually get. I'm sorry if that means you might see and hear some bad news on the TV that bad things have happened to - gasp - our own volunteer soldiers. I have this crazy view of things that not only is our nation rediculously rich compared to most of the world, but that when you F over an entire region and then have a prime opportunity to make it right, you should do so. And that, wonder of wonders, instead of just getting a 3rd party to die for your own goals, that you should responsibly be ponying up blood of your own.

I have no idea General Patton what you're talking about, try and calm down and do a rational post next time. I know it's very hard for you to accept that the Dem.'s and not the Rep's have been controlling things for closing in on a year now (POTUS) and 3 years (Congress), and this makes you panicked inside because it conflicts strongly with your BDS. I has to be hard realizing that "the adults" are as bad as the last crew (I'd say worse, given the rediculous harping they did as if they were superior, so clearly, they're not, and, have not learned the lessons they should have been learning).

I am "defending" them on my own dime, it's called the US military and my tax dollars at work. Same way I'm personally helping the 4th and 5th generation welfare recipients I'm sure your heart bleeds over (and that I know by your response to me, that you work towards serving not for profit, Right?), by paying my tax dollars and whatever service people enable them to clothe themselves and eat.

What an idiotic thing to say Patranus, Afghanistan is a largely 100% Muslim nation, therefore any Afghan rulers are almost certain to be Muslim.

The point being, there are a pile of Muslim nations that are not sheltering Al-Quida, are not a threats to the USA, are not in a state of near anarchy, so why are you harping on the Muslim religion?

Sixty five years ago we were in the middle of a world war and our enemies were not Muslims. Terrorism and war are equal opportunity employers of all religious doctrines
including atheism.

Nor does Al-Quida particularly need Afghanistan when they have a pile of unstable countries to pick from. Nor does the USA have to go out of our sphere of influence to find plenty of largely Christian based insurgencies that are ongoing.
 
This just makes it easier for any and all tribal warlords in Afghanistan to make a choice on who to support for the long term. Now that they know that Obama will pull the plug in 3 years the choice obvious. Setting a deadline to failure in order to gain political brownie points back home is a dishonor to the men and women fighting and dying in Afghanistan.

Yes, but sometimes that backfires, like when he thanked himself for having himself over to the White House. The TelePrompter is a fickle mistress.

Ducatti, that is certainly the downside of the deadline. It surely would have been better to set the deadline in private, with the government and warlords. But those people are so interconnected and duplicitous that I'm not sure it would have mattered, the Taliban would know probably before all the "friendly" warlords. (And that's assuming the anti-Americans at State didn't tell them first!) But you're right; if the warlords don't think they can beat the Taliban with our help in three years, then they'll turn and we'll get run out of there before three years even gets near. Still, how do you get the Afghanis to man up and fight?
