Increase the Minimum Wage: As president, Obama will raise the minimum wage to $9.50 an hour by 2011 and index it to inflation so full-time workers can earn a living wage that allows them to raise their families and pay for basic needs such as food, transportation, and housing ? things so many people take for granted.

Personally I think it is good, hopefully he also abolishes the arcane practice of allowing tip pay to go towards the minimum wage requirement. This $9.50 should apply to all jobs and tip should never count towards it.

How can you have a non-political discussion about minimum wage policy?

restaurant raises the wages
restaurant has to either fire people or raise the prices of food to make up for the new wages
...
non-profit?

Good, I wish they would raise it even higher. Say in the 22.43 to 22.78 range. How can a family of 8 live off of 9 dollars an hour. I mean the 7 kids will go hungry, maybe it would help if daddy was around, but he's in jail for armed robbery of the package store two doors down.

Minimum wage isn't just for waiters. Waiters don't even make minimum wage. If the minimum wage is raised to $9.50, they'll get paid $5.27 rather than $2.13.

Laughable if he thinks this will change anything. All it does it provide a short term gain for people on the lowest ring of society until inflation catches up. The idea the govt can legislate people out of poverty is pathetically funny.

Stupid. All this does is decrease the purchasing power of non-minimum wage workers.

Exactly. When I got hired at my current job I was making over 2x minimum wage. Now I am making barely 1.5x min wage. If it gets raised again, I will make even less.

My wage doesn't go up by an equal %, so lets reduce the rest of the populations purchasing power.

How did they do it 40 years ago on 2 bucks an hour? Raising it to 22.43 will only raise the poverty line to 22.43 an hour. Are you under the impression all things stay the same after you triple the minimum wage? If so why not make us all millionaires and dictate companies need to pay us 1 million a year?

sarcasm meter broken?

Just a move to placate those he bussed to the polls for their vote. The 2011 is significant because he's up for reelection in 2012. It's a move to buy votes.

Welcome to Carter part 2.

The similarities in events leading up to his election are stunningly similar, and so are his beliefs and policies. If you ask me, I would predict an admin as huge of a failure as Carter's. And no, I'm not Republican.

BTW, this actually hurts the lowest wage earners, just as corporate taxes do... because all it means is an increase in the prices of goods and services they use everyday and can already barely afford.

In case you're not old enough to remember, Carter brought us double digit inflation. I predict the same will happen in this admin... and the feds will not be able to stop it as business is forced to raise prices to cover higher taxes and wages.

I say we just raise the minimum wage to $100 and call it quits. That way everyone will have enough money to buy anything they need.

The minimum wage in the US was never meant to be a living wage. This will cause goods and services to skyrocket in price and the people who just got raises won't be able to afford it.

Wasn't that the birth of stagflation?

there aren't enough workers chronically making minimum wage to make 'helping' them out by raising the minimum wage a good policy. the majority of minimum wage workers are high school and college students. they work part time, and even then they aren't stuck on minimum wage for a long period of time.
