As I posted on another forum where we're having the same discussion:
I have kind of mixed feeling about this.
On the one hand, they're illegal immigrants and should be deported as soon as they're discovered...
On the other hand, they did nothing illegal since they were brought here by their parents, have (for the most part) lived as legally as possible...were good students, broke no other laws.
I DO NOT support the "DREAM Act," however...illegal immigrants should not be eligible for ANY kind of state or federal support, benefit, or waiver of tuition.
For that matter, LEGAL immigrants should not be eligible for any kind of state or federal support or benefits either.
Those kinds of things should ONLY be available for US citizens. (native born or naturalized...doesn't matter)
I've known a few people who were brought here illegally by their parents. Most spoke perfect English w/o any noticeable accent, held jobs, and were otherwise, no different than most "second-generation" immigrants.
BUT, they're still here illegally, and by giving them a "pass" on their immigration status is essentially just another fucking amnesty program.
Box em all up and ship them back to whatever country they're originally from.
Box car or pine box...it's up to them.
Also, yes, I see this as a bit of pandering to the Hispanic community by the President. While the illegal immigrants (theoretically) can't vote, the citizens of Hispanic origin CAN and DO vote...and they'll likely see this as a good thing for their group.
(although I know some legal immigrants from several countries, who have gone through the process and became citizens who are against any softening of the illegal immigration laws. Why should the illegals be allowed to "skip the process and expenses" of immigrating here legally?)
