I pleasantly surprised this is actually happening.

I hope both parties give the finger to that turd of a swing state with it's population of people thinking 50 years of worthless policy will let them get all their land back in Cuba. It will be great hearing candidates from both parties in that state stutter out hypocritical reasoning for keeping the embargo as their colleagues laugh at them.

Agree.

Just seems silly this has been going on for so long.

The right arguing against this due to "human rights issues" and "rewarding dictatorships" is ABSOLUTELY LAUGHABLE.

For christ sakes who opened up China??? NIXON...

At this point its obvious that
1: the embargo is not doing anything positive for the US or cuba and not advancing US' goals in latin america
2: improving business ties and economic conditions leads to a middle class that demands more rights and influence in government
3: engaging one of america's closest latin american countries is the best way to bring them into the western sphere of influence

You know what they say, only Nixon could go to China. Had it been a Republican to open things up with Cuba it would have been OK, but for a Democrat to do it, it's end of the world. Typical partisan bullshit.

This is a good change and one of the few things Obama has made a good decision about so far.

Its only a minority who want to keep the embargo going on Cuba, the majority either dont care or think its nutty after 50 years. But Politics are powerful, and its the old Cuban elite who left Cuba 50 + years that dominate South Florida both economically and politically, so there is mucho pandering going on to that political "block".

Thanks OBAM....err, uh...

Actually, thanks Obama. It just feels awkward saying it non-sarcastically.

As someone who wasn't old enough to pay attention to politics at the time, was there the same backlash against Clinton after the normalization of relations with Vietnam? I know there still is a bit from the older generation of die hard Viets.

NO surprise Obama did this a day after Jeb Bush announces he's setting up presidential bid. Its like when Obama flips voters the Marxist bird a few days after election. Obama wants to weaken the enthusiasm for Bush among the Hispanics Bush like to have love fests with. It also cuts at the leverage of the Cuban Lobby.

Of course since Obama suspended immigration and checking for criminals subversives etc Cuba can send over more criminals, revolutionaries, terrorists - and the welfare cripples Obama wants to see America buried under. Obama also helps Iran get nukes and free from sanctions. No surprise he helps Castro. The "embargo" is just a decoration in this situation. The deeper realities are more subversive and what we expect from our America hating psycho president. He'll have a nuke a week to drop now that the elections are over and he feels free to rampage.

The ace card Obama pulled with the Hispanics was the Dream Act. I dont know if you live in a heavily hispanic area, but I do [Miami -70% hispanic here] and that alone gave him the vote from most hispanics. I dont think Bush can pull the Dream Act voters away from the Democrats now, you are talking about a large portion of the Hispanic community who now feel emotionally tied to the Democrats since "Obama made it so my grandma cant be deported"...If the Dream act wasnt passed then it would be different. Infact most Cubans voted Republican before that, since they blamed JFK for betraying them during the Bay of Pigs invasion.

The old Cubans in Florida are still angry because their property was nationalized after the revolution, the Cubans in Cuba believe that the ones who left abandoned the property and shouldn't get it back and the younger Cuban Americans may not care.

A dollar a day wages and short shipping routes.
Wal-Mart is probably scouting locations already.

African nations are next...

Romney won the Cuban bloc by an astonishingly narrow margin in 2012. The US born Cubans are supplanting the foreign born ones in political influence. The Cuban bloc will probably be lost to the GOP by 2016.

The Republicans seem to be the barriers of progress. Listening to Republicans on Fox News and hearing them talk is like a lesson in how to string together talking points (slogans).

I'm glad Obama is challenging what it means to be a Lame Duck President.

And the Wall Streeter's have been wanting to get back in there for fun and profit for decades too.

If anything, our profiteers and lobbyists are the best in the world. If there's anyone on the face of this earth that can corrupt the Cubans into becoming another Mexico, our guys are the pro's that can get it done the fastest.

Hang on to yer lug nuts Castro, let's see how fast you sell out your countrymen for riches beyond yer wildest dreams. OR, let's see how steadfast your principles of top down communism are against the allure of western capitalist debauchery. ;)

I think Obama's enjoying his lame duck status so far. I wish he would have been this bold during his first 6 years. Seems like he might have found his backbone somewhere along the way.

Quoted for TRUTH. It took losing two midterms and decimating the Democratic bench for him to wake up.

That doesn't make sense.

Cuban's can't be deported, so nobody's "grandmother" could have been deported.
