Good speech? Are you kidding me? His only promise is to throw a bunch of money at his union cronies (hiring more teachers).

I would of loved to hear what exact loopholes he plans on closing - the ones that allowed his buddies at GE to pay $0 of tax on billions of revenue? Doubt it.

Oh the ironing! Someone here could have used an English teacher, or 7.

I see there is a need for this in this thread as well:

Okay, here are some facts, courtesy of the Tax Policy Center. They may not allay Mr. Perry’s dismay, but they should assuage the concerns of anyone with a soul.

  • Of the 46% of households who don’t pay income tax, nearly 2/3 pay payroll taxes.
  • Of the 18% who pay neither income nor payroll taxes, more than half are elderly.
  • More than 1/3 have incomes below $20,000. (Note: Ronald Reagan made the decision in 1986 to exempt people with incomes below the poverty line from federal income tax. Twenty-five years later, that still seems like a good call.)
  • Only 1% of nontaxpaying households are nonelderly with incomes over $20,000. I’m dismayed about them too governor. Maybe we should close some of the loopholes that allowed almost 1,500 millionaires to escape income tax in 2009.
More @ Forbes

only 18% of people pay no federal payroll/income taxes and half (9% of the total) are elderly

one thing to keep in mind for the people who keep saying that the poor don't have skin the game is that payroll tax is a regressive tax which is 36% of government revenue

I fear its going to be nothing new same ol' BS as before. Tho one never knows... Maybe Obama will actually say something good and the repugs will go along with it and we can get something done? Doubt it but, as usual it's always fun just to hear the rupugs whine and cry about the pettiest bs points ...half the time they are just so retarded you wonder how they got in.

Somehow the government is spamming my inbox. So, I thought I'd post my SPAM on here! :awe: Now you don't have to go CNN to stream from work.

I think he's going to offer free guns to the unemployed, the homeless, and those in foreclosure with hungry kids and then mention who stands in the way of him getting a jobs bill passed.

sure glade to know where your priority's stand. Apparently a few house members were at the football games instead of showing up for the speech ... I guess you voted for losers like them as well?

This is why this country is fucked. You and your ilk simply don't have this country's best interest at heart. Your more content to watch it burn in flames.

Honestly I don't give two shits about you or your GOP ilk anymore. You are a scourge that must be rooted out of politics ASAP.

-Doesn't believe in evolution
-Doesn't believe in global warming
-Believes tax cuts for the rich will trickle down to the poor
-Believes in teaching Creationism in science classes
-Hates and discriminates against gays and minorities

That's your party. That's who you are.

you are a brainwashed tool.

You're justing looking for every opportunity to call him a fucker. When there is no opportunity, you make one up. You should make videos of your daily commute, I bet they'd be hilarious.

Notice how he won't acknowledge the several tax cuts that Obama has given to him including the proposed 3.1% SS tax rate for next year?

Why would they hire and retain American workers when the growth and cheap labor is in Asia? To the extent there is American demand for goods and services, might as well still use Asian labor.

I was reading a preview article of Obama's speech on CNN a few days ago. I can't find the article anymore, but it it had an interview with a small business owner about potential payroll tax cut, and the owner said (paraphrasing), "tax cuts aren't going to provide an incentive to hire people that I don't need."

That quote basically describes the story of the economy today. US Real GDP is a mere fraction of a percent away from the all-time high in 2007 and growing, yet the economy has 7 million fewer workers. And that jobs figure isn't even counting the jobs that would have to be added to keep up with population growth.

We have millions of workers providing no value, or even negative value, to the market. No amount of stimulus is going to fix this. Sure, stimulus funds could employ some of these people for a while, but chances are good that they will find themselves right back in the unemployment line once stimulus funds run out.

Overall it was a nice campaign speech and probably helped Obama in the polls and his re-election chances, but I found it to be rather unpersuasive. I heard nothing in there that will actually help anything long term. Spending more borrowed money.

I'll talk to some of those "evil execs", you know, those evil people that lead fortune 100 companies, to see what they thought. I talk to them regularly because of my job, and most of them seem to think building a big stack of cash to handle upcoming adversity is the right answer (as opposed to expanding and investing).

How is the payroll tax a tax? You get that money back. The left can't make up it's mind. Sometimes social security is a retirement program, sometimes it's a tax. Which is it?

All I heard was typical politician talk of promises without substance. I can do the same thing ' if we do things this way then everyone will have money and everyone will enjoy life and be happy forever and if it doesn't work out it isn't my fault it is because everyone else is against me and doesn't want to help you so blame them'

My crystal ball was right, more partisan drivel, appeals to work together to pass a bill while blaming the other party, then more spending and more taxes. Yawn.

Can't force a company to stay in the U.S., you must entice them. How about dropping the corp tax rate and closing most loopholes? Maybe then GE can fire the 800 tax attorneys it employs to figure out ways to make enough energy star appliances in order to pay zero tax.

That's hard to do when you have an obstructionist body in government that says No, we won't allow you to entice them.

And of course, that is Obama's fault too.

Pretty much this.

Why would you hire useless employees when you can use tax cuts for more profits?

I remember a time when everything was Bush's fault...funny how that works.

Yeah, well tax cuts during economic booms and starting two wars will get you a lot of blame. Obama's not blameless because he obviously can't come up with any real solutions outside of the already tried and failed stuff. For that matter, neither can the Republicans.

The biggest issue plaguing republicans currently is they can't even bring forward a candidate who is not retarded. If they could they could probably beat Obama at this point since confidence is obviously down.

Your "crystal ball" is a mirror. You only see what your blind partisanship expects to see. It becomes self-fulfilling, your personal echo chamber.

No it is not. However, obama cannot keep spending borrowed money. He needs to do something to stimulate real job growth. And by stimulate job growth I do not mean spend more borrowed money to keep people employed.

Once real job growth begins (that is companies grow and have a need for more employees), then tax revenues increased for the Federal government and then tax money can be made available for infrastructure upkeep.

Unfortunately, we have this vicious circle where companies don't want to invest in growth because they don't see the demand to justify it. The intent of these government "jobs" programs is to fuel a spurt in demand that will give companies a reason to invest in growing. It's analogous to lighter fluid for a grill. You don't use lighter fluid to cook your burgers or steak, you use it to get the charcoal burning.

Riiiiight, my personal echo chamber showing my penchant for ever increasing spending and taxing. Good one ;)

Some people get that money back, some people don't. A tax is a financial levy placed upon a citizen by a government. Payroll taxes are obviously exactly that. The fact that someone might be the beneficiary of a government program in the future does absolutely nothing to change this fact.
