This is Obama's fault right here. He should have notified the court before he became an elected official that he would not be available for jury duty. There goes more taxpayer money(for the paper and the shipping) wasted.

So some of you idiots are against him going to NYC for a vacation because of the cost but think it would be just fine for him to waste the money going to jury duty?

In a way I think he should show up. But you can get kicked off jury duty for various reasons and being president would be one of them. Realistically it wouldn't be a huge burden for him to show up, dick around for an hour or two on his blackberry, and get kicked off somewhere. It would be a big of a dog and pony, though.

Prepare security arrangements, run background checks on anyone who would be in the same building as the juror selection, fly Obama out, run him through jury selection, bounce him back out, fly him home. Not only does it burn at least half a day, it's a lot of wasted resources.

I would have just answered every question on the questionnaire saying "I can unilaterally declare any of you as enemy combatants and have you waterboarded btw."

I think Obama over reacted a bit however. Mass election must have rattled him.

Just being an attorney is enough to get him booted off of a jury. I doubt either lawyer trying the case nor a judge would want a famous politician like that on a jury anyway.

I think it is amusing he even got picked. I'd assume it was a computer that generated the summons.

I think I'm a corporatist shill now, but it's hard to keep up. I used to be a flaming liberal when Bush was in office, and I still am on other forums.

It's hard to remember everyone's expectations ;)

From the Simpsons:

"Kang: Abortions for all.
[crowd boos]
Kang: Very well, no abortions for anyone.
[crowd boos]
Kang: Hmm... Abortions for some, miniature American flags for others.
[crowd cheers and waves miniature flags] "

I see.

Care to elaborate your position?

Obama thinks he is above the law and doesn't have to show up to jury duty.

Now, if you had a presentation at work and were "unable to make it" do you think the courts would give you a pass? Nope.

That is the definition of special treatment only afforded to the ruling class.

Ruling class...kinda like the president...the role he was kinda voted into

but if minor theft or a car jacking is more important than the national economy or national security...

Anyway, non-citizens can't be on a jury ;)

So you're saying that the man who has the power to indefinitely detain anyone he wishes, or pardon anyone he wishes, should not be on a jury? That's crazy talk!

How is being able to opt-out of jury duty anything but special treatment?

You have to be kidding.......right?? The President of the United States and jury duty?/ Your a real work of art..

FYI-George W Bush, Ronald Reagan & Bill Clinton all got jury summons when they were serving as president. Their summons were sent to their pre-White House homes, as was President Obama's. None of them served jury duty while in office either.

Then lets say he did go to Jury Duty -- you would be screaming and hollering, And if he did show up, you'd see a post by Patranus about how he's wasting time showing up for jury duty when he has more important things to do.

Where did you get that?
Apparently he thinks that only politicians can use "Job Requirements" as an excuse to get out of Jury Duty.

Since he is most likely between the ages of 12 and 14 he has no idea that it is actually fairly easy to get out of Jury Duty, most people I know who have done it use it as an excuse to switch it up for a day.

They also would never put a lawyer on Jury Duty. Hell, a dude I worked with when I was an EMT told me that he has been called up to Jury Duty 7 times and every time they ask his profession he is immediately dismissed.

They don't take people who have anything to do with Law Enforcement or the Courts.

Oh and I don't know what you are talking about not being able to get out of Jury Duty for Work. I got out of it no problem. Cost me 3 minutes of my time to write a letter and 45 cents to mail it.

I think this thread title is misleading.

The article said "won't be able to make it". I'm pretty sure if you're working (or on vacation) away from Chicago, like in Washington DC, the court will excuse you from jury duty.

Anyway, non-citizens can't be on a jury
;)

That or some secretary who found it hilarious that his name was picked and decided to send the Jury Summons anyway.

Jury duty is very important for our great and unique, power to the people, system to work but I'd have to say getting insta threat briefs and having hands on football is a little more pressing than being locked in a jury box. HUGE national security risk if nothing else.

I am glad he (and other politicians) believe they are entitled to special treatment.

so if you were born and raised and lived most of your adult life in California then moved to Florida and an jury summons in your name went to your parents house who still live in California, you would board a plane and fly back to California just to pull jury duty?

don't think so.
