Amazing fact.

Take Obama's advertising over the past 4 months and factor it out to a full year and he would be the third largest advertiser in the country. Behind only AT&T and Verizon.

I think Obama has killed campaign finance reform for good. And you have to wonder if this is a good thing or a bad thing for the country.

http://politicalticker.blogs.c...l-but-att-and-verizon/
Presidential candidates are sold in much the same way a new product is: with an expensive, flashy, and ubiquitous television campaign.

And according to advertising figures provided by Campaign Media Analysis Group, CNN's consultant on ad spending, Barack Obama's campaign has spent more money selling its candidate on television than most major brand name companies do selling their products.

The Illinois senator's campaign is projected to have spent $250 million on ads in the last four months ? a number that is equivalent to $750 million in a full year. Only AT&T, with a yearly advertising budget of about $1.3 billion, and Verizon, which shells out $950 million a year on ads, spends more than the Democratic presidential nominee.

But most major companies spend far less than Obama, including McDonald?s ($588 million), Sprint PCS ($482 million), T-Mobile ($404 million), Target ($388 million), and Wal-Mart ($335 million).

John McCain is projected to have spent about $110 million since the general election began.

"This advertising spending by Obama is big, and not just in terms of presidential politics but in terms of all commercial advertising ? he has spent enough to be a mega-brand," CMAG's Evan Tracey said.

Obama's massive advertising budget is also a stark reminder of just how much it costs to finance a modern presidential campaign ? and, predicts Tracey, it could just end the era of public financing.

"If Obama wins it is clear that the days of being on public financing are over and anyone thinking of running for president in four years will have to ask themselves one question before jumping in ? Can I raise $600 million?" said Tracey.
BTW I expect we will see some type of fundraising scandal related to Obama post election. Lots of noise going around about foreign donations, donors with fake names, lack of basic fraud protection on his finance web site etc etc.

Election. Fraud. Now where have we heard those words in the same sentence before?

Republican 527s were what forced Obama's decision not to take public financing. Plus, it's hard to argue with a campaign funded by individual contributions. All the bullshit about foreign donors, etc. is just that - bullshit.

Sad part is, if Republican's were spending this much, all we would be hearing from the lemmings here is about McCain "bought the election"

Yep, fact is the campaign finance system was already dead. Obama's system is much better and I hope we see more of it in the future, millions of individuals funding a campaign with small contributions.

Well, I for one take heart, no matter how many ads Obama runs, the sun will still come up in the morning and Non Prof John will not vote for Obama. But face the facts, GWB&co is what motivates everyone and their brother and law to donate to Obama, as for McCain, he lost all donor appeal when he voted 90% with GWB.

PJ, you are exactly eight years too late, you were loving it when the republicans were dishing it out and screwing any and all pooches , and now you complain at the the consequences it later brings.

And the republican lemmings would be declaring it as liberal whining, defending it with "it's a free country/market, people have the right to give to whatever cause they want to, etc etc." You whiners should be liking what Obama's doing - by foregoing public funds he is not financing his campaign it with your tax dollars like McCain has.

Topic Summary: No wonder he is winning.

Yep, you nailed it. No wait, the liberal media bias is why he is winning. No wait, it's ACORN. No wait, it's because all Obama supporters are mindless zombies. No wait, it's because he's black and we have white guilt. No wait, it's because according to Cindy McCain he's running the dirtiest campaign in history.

The Republican Party isn't going to do itself any favors by making up excuses, you know. If you'd like to keep believing them, though, good luck in 2010.

Yeh, well, it's all voluntary and it's all for a good cause, and it doesn't even come close to the free airtime GWB Inc. got pandering to fear and bloodlust in the runup to the invasion of Iraq.

And yeh, I'm sure there will be an attempt claim scandal, real or imaginary- doesn't matter much to the rabid right. They just need their outrage fix...

It takes alot of money to convince people you're not a Muslim.

btw how much money would it have cost McCain if he had to pay for the 24/7 political ad that is called FoxNews? So in reality McCain got more media than Obama has despite Obama spending more.

Not sure, but I'm guess it would have cost about as much as Obama would have had to pay for CNN/MSNBC

Anyone who tries to equate FoxNews with CNN or msnbc is beneath contempt and really has no place in a rationale discussion.
There's a REASON FoxNews is so different from real news media outlets here and in the world.
And its not because it fair and balanced, its because its a propaganda outlet for the Republican party.

It is like it never occured to the OP that he is winning because the country doesn't want another Republican in the White House for the next 4 years.

MSNBC is just as biased the other way, you just cant see it because you agree with it. CNN isnt as bad, but still pushes Obama pretty hard.

Even Scarborrough has made a left hand turn since the station did a few years ago.

Just take a look at the lineup at MSNBC : http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3096434/

And what's really priceless is that McCain supporters think he's a boob because he's not George Bush. Hopefully they won't be having a say in this election.
