Obama Apologizes for Someone Accidentally Burning a Koran and...

President Karzai of Afghanistan does not apologize for those two American soldiers being killed by an Afghan soldier????😱

Soldiers act under the authority and command of the President, so an apology is not out of line.

Whose authority and command do the protesters act under? Not defending Karzai (because I too think he is an asshole), but maybe he is just too much of a coward to take the heat from his people for an apology that he doesn't feel obligated to make, even though he probably knows that we would appreciate one.

^^^ Don't agree with the nuking part, but I am all for getting the hell out of there ASAP. Obama should order every single American Troop to leave now!!

I don't recall any apologies from GWB during Iraq II for the string of friendly-fire incidents against British troops.

I'm not saying that's ok, but in the context of this thread there ought to be a bit more consistency of opinion.

No surprise. The one thing about Obama I despise is his need to keep apologizing to countries for everything the USA does. He seems to look down on the country he was elected to lead.

"The president apologized for the burning, but I haven't seen the president demand that the government of Afghanistan apologize for the killing of two young Americans."

^And you guys agree with this.

What are you a bunch of children crying "not fair!" to their mommies? The fact that your president apologized for something that provoked national outrage in the country that you're occupying is a GOOD thing, it's the minimum amount of professionalism required form someone who's responsible with leading a country and an army over seas.

When something as benign and simple as an apology can defuse an extremely tense situation, are you really going to first point at the other guy and demand that he should do it first, like a kindergartner bitching at his teacher that 'Jimmy did it too'?

Well tough shit, you're not in kindergarten, your not in your mommy's house sucking at her tit; You're in a foreign nation full of angry, backward people who want justice for the last 11 years of war and are about to snap. You do not hold them to the same fucking standards you would someone form the US or Canada or Norway, you swallow your pride and say 'I'm sorry', regardless of weather or not it was your fault.

President Obama is responsible for the conduct of the US military.

Preisdent Karzai is not responsible for the conduct of protesters.

The mistreatment of the Koran reflects on the US which has forces in Afghanistan.

Every time criminals kill Americans overseas - or foreign visitors are killed in the US by criminals - the governments don't apologize for those actions.

It's pretty arrogant to go to a country, offend them, and then blame them.

Oh, and not just blame them in some cases.

Call for nuking them. What good citizens we have. Idiots isn't strong enough.

So is your premise the United States should only do the right thing when others do the right thing? Not smoothly worded but maybe a leadership position dictates doing the right thing just because it is the right thing.

With Mitt Romney you get, "I can't have illegals working for me, I'm running for President for pete's sake". Leadership would have been I can't have illegals working for me because it is wrong.

He shouldnt have apologized, it was a mistake wasnt it?

He could have said he regretted that it happened, everyone can agree to that. But apologizing, to me, blows the issue even more oout of proportion than it already is.

I was cleaning my gun when it killed your dog accidentally. I don't apologize but I regret that it happened. Oh, and this wasn't an accident.

You should apologize because you took MY dog away.

Im not going to apologize if i dropped a copy of a newspaper in the gutter, especially if i can just go get another one.

The Koran is not a newspaper. It's important to Afghans and we knew it.

It'd be more like me spitting on a picture of your mother.

I don't know about that. A man shouldn't hinge the decision to make an apology on whether another person is equally man enough to apologize for his errors. I don't see how this means that he thinks less of himself (or his country).

It's their HOLY BOOK. Seriously, WTF else do they have going for them over there. They're even killing each other over the burning of the Koran...

Unless the president wants this to get out of proportion and lead to a wider conflict with the wider muslim world, apologizing, rather than regretting, is the right move.

I understand what you are saying. For me, if the Koran was so important, than people would have taken more steps to ensure it was not tossed into the refuse with the rest of the stuff that was burned.

I'm all for apologizing if it was burned intentionally. However, apologizing like this for a mistake doesn't treat the Afghan people any better than if they were children, and we threw away something in essence trivial (a copy of a book) but OH SO IMPORTANT to them (their holy book) You see, to me, grown ups should be able to admit that mistakes happen and carry on with their day. Not riot in the streets and kill people of something as trivial as burning a holy book BY accident.

They are acting like children and we are coddling it. The Presidential apology is an important thing too don't you think?

I wouldn't leave a picture of my mother hanging out along with all the other trash...not knowing any more specifics about the events that lead up to an accidental burning of the Koran...thats all I can offer up.

I disagree.

By now everyone should know that apologizing, even an apology by our President, won't do a damn thing to quell the unrest that those people do. What do you expect to have happen? They would all accept Obama's apology and go home and have dinner and forget about it? No way.

You are right, their holy book is all they have going for them.

To be fair, our soldiers are occupying his nation and those soldiers burned a book that is sacred to his people. Its really not the same thing for HIM [Karzai] to apologize, afterall our soldiers are in his country by force and we insulted them by burning a Quaran. Obama on the other hand HAS to apologize, the only thing keeping us there is the Afghani people, if they go completely batshit crazy then we might aswell pack our bags and leave that country altogether.

Obama is trying to placate the Afghani's that is all...Like it or hate it, its the best thing he can do even though it does make him look weak. The alternative is for him to snub his nose and go "so what if we burned a book" - that is asking for a shitload of trouble since everyone knows Afghanistan is batshit crazy for Islam.

As far as Karzai goes ? He has nothing to gain by saying sorry, if anything he would anger his countrymen by apologizing for the deaths of two of the occupiers [who are also infidels] of his nation. Tribal leaders would likely turn on him or try to have him killed to.

And btw I think Obama is a horrible President but in this regard he did pick the best course of action - which is to placate the Afghani's for as long as possible so that we can finish the Trans-Afghanistan Oil pipeline and go home [at which point it is Mission Accomplished].
