Didn't eat much oatmeal growing up, except for those little packets of flavored instant oatmeal.

Now, I'm having a very late dinner tonight: a bowl of oatmeal with an apple, cinnamon, and a little brown sugar. Anyone else become a bigger fan of oatmeal as they got older?

I hated it as a kid but I like it now, well the Cinnamon Roll flavor any ways. It doesn't do anything for me filling me up wise though.

I get in kicks with it. I actually liked it more when I was younger, but I'll eat it kind of frequently for a week or 2, then that'll be it for a few months.

I loved oatmeal as a kid, although I always added a half cup of brown sugar and chocolate chips.

I like it more than I did as a kid, but I'm lazy so I still use the Quaker instant packets in the microwave. One bowl, 2:40, done. I do toss in some chopped walnuts though for extra fanciness.

For long cook, I like steel cuts oats, for quick, I like quick oats, but I cook them per the instant directions. They still have a firmness that way that I like better than instant oats.

Oatmeal is a poor man's staple. I keep a big bag of it around. Usually is breakfast, with sugar and fruit on the side, but can also work in a pinch as part of a meal.

Example is I paid $2 for 24 eggs the other day (~$.08 each). I'll always have some extra lettuce or fruit or whatever on hand. So you piece together the eggs and the produce and the oatmeal and its a meal that really ends up doing nothing to your budget. Whole meal is filling, nutritious, and under $1. Just not something you'll think is tasty every day of the week.

I used to think the packets were the lazy way, but that's only because it saves the 5 seconds of measuring ingredients (if you measure) - roughly 2 parts water, 1 part quaker instant oats. Dump the oats in boiling water; cook for 1 minute.

The nice thing about them is that they fill you up... pretty quickly. I made two servings, and it's more than I want. I wonder how many meals a week I could tolerate oatmeal for - with different things added. And, for how long before I got sick of oatmeal?

Nope. Never really liked it.

I like the instant packets somewhat sometimes. It depends on how sugary they are, too sugary and I just feel like I am going to barf. Similar experience is had with drinking regular soda. :(

I have always liked oatmeal but was partial to Cream Of Wheat when I was a kid. Instant oatmeal is shit.

We've recently started eating atole a couple times a week. I don't give the sugar crash from it I used to get from oatmeal.

I'm in the same boat, oatmeal for breakfast and sometimes late at night. Buy them in bulk at Costco. I usually do 3 packets at a time. Mix with soy milk, water and sometimes honey to taste. Microwave for 2 minutes. :awe:

Oakmeal is quite possibly the healthiest thing you can eat for breakfast. Fast, cheap, easy, healthy, and pretty tasty. Who can complain?

EAT YOUR FUCKING OATS!

I've had oatmeal maybe twice in my entire life. And I thought it wasn't too bad. My friends practically had it every day when they were younger, so they think I'm a bit warped and twisted. But it's nice with sugar and milk.

Probably the biggest change in my oatmeal preference is realizing that those packets are a huge ripoff for the "convenience" of having packets. The big tubs of instant oats are a better "bulk" purchase. Preflavored "brown sugar and cinnamon" - like I can't add cinnamon and brown sugar during the 2 1/2 minutes it took me to prepare them (on the stove.)?

I'll have to give the steel cut oats a try.

Other things instant oats are good for: meatloaf. At first I though "no way, that meatloaf can't be as good as my mom's meatloaf." Best meatloaf I've had. Plus oatmeal cookies & no bake cookies.
