I like the instant packets but I usually just add a lot of milk and make oatmeal milkshakes. I've also been making Quinoa a lot lately it's pretty good more nutty than oatmeal though.

Another oatmeal fan here - in fact I'm posting while eating my morning oatmeal with banana and maple syrup. I had oatmeal for breakfast as a kid, moved away from it for a while, came back to it when I had kids. Filling, reasonably healthy and I can do it without thinking.

Didn't eat much oatmeal growing up, except for those little packets of flavored instant oatmeal.

Now, I'm having a very late dinner tonight: a bowl of oatmeal with an apple, cinnamon, and a little brown sugar. Anyone else become a bigger fan of oatmeal as they got older?

Yes, but only instant stuff still. Eat it about 3 to 4 times per week if not more.

Is it that you got older or that it got colder? I tend to like warm meals like that as the weather outside gets frosty.

Regular oatmeal is okay. I like the texture & flavor of steel cut oatmeal a lot more but it takes much more time to make.

Here's my recipe:

1 1/4 c. water
3/4 c. half and half
1 tsp. salt
~2 1/2 c. Quaker Oats - Old Fashioned
1 tbsp. butter (NOT vegetable oil spread, BUTTER!)
1 tbsp. sugar
1 tbsp. brown sugar
1 tbsp. real maple syrup
fresh ground cinnamon to taste

Bring water, half and half, and salt to a boil. Pour in oats and cook until liquid is absorbed and oats are al dente. Mix in remaining ingredients and stir well. Eat.

Just plain oatmeal or "steel-cut" for me, no instant flavored packets.
My preference is for either authentic maple syrup or honey.

Try boiling the oats in just enough water to boil the oats, then lower the heat, add milk, and cook to warm but not boiling. This way the hot milk is mixed with the oats and the pot is not left with that ring of cooked milk that is impossible to clean. I also avoid boiled milk since it easily spills over and the proteins separate on top.

Instant for me. Don't have time to fiddle around screwing with something more complicated. Boil some water, 2 packets of maple and brown sugar, alittle milk, enjoy.

I've just got hooked on quick oats last week. Just add water and I usually have a bowl each morning.

Love this stuff. Cook it with half water, half milk. Then flavor it up with a little vanilla, cinnamon, and brown sugar.

Too bad it takes forever to cook. I'll have to look into those instant steel cut oats perhaps.

That stuff is so fucking good. My step mom used to get it every now and then when I was younger.

Yup. That's my favorite for flavor. The instant steel cut isn't nearly the same. If they cost they same as Quaker, go ahead, but don't spend any real money on them. I got some cheap at BigLots, but the instant isn't anything special.

So, how different do the steel cut oats taste from quaker instant oats?

And, if I want bulk, I'll go down to the feed store & pick up a 50 pound bag for about $9

Doc, the instant stuff isn't even in the same category. More than a taste difference, it's the HUGE difference in texture.

I'm not sure the feed oats are gonna be quite the same as any of the "food grade" oats...but "hay," whatever works for ya...:p

Like Boomer said, it's virtually a different product. The steel cut have a heavy texture, and a nutty flavor. They take forever to cook, but it's worth it when you have the time. Pick up a tin of McCann when you go to the store. They're a little pricey, but I consider that the standard in steel cut oats. You can then compare that to what's available at the farm supply.

Where do you get the snoqualamie falls oats? I live in the "quah" so I'm just down 90 from the falls. I always eat Quaker every morning but I would not mind trying another brand, especially a local one.

1/2 cup rolled oats
1 cup water
5 mins in microwave on 50% power
Top with chopped pecans
Top with pomegranate arils (or fresh blueberries when poms are out of season)
Kneel before Zod

The above is precisely what I'm eating at this very moment. I stock up on pomegranate arils specifically for this purpose, and they keep pretty well.

I've been eating it since I was a kid. My dad is Scottish so it's a staple in our house.

I usually eat the packets. Since my shift starts early (7:30am), I make it at work and eat breakfast there. Great and healthy way to get a hot meal when you don't have time to cook.

I buy it at the local Winco.

I don't know if they have a local outlet or not...nor if it's even a real local business for you...might just be a "cute" name.
