Consider that someone notices your excessive vacation and complains to someone other than your boss. They find out you took too much. And they care.
Not only will you have to repay it, but you can't even wave your email that says you have X days. Even if you have that email, everyone will know YOU knew you didn't have that much vacation. Your reputation will be shot. It's like the person who plays stupid that they didn't notice an excess amount in their paycheck. Nobody believes them.
You might really boost your standing at work if you only take the vacation you have coming to you, and if you are asked at the end of the year why you didn't take it all, you can say the records were wrong and you didn't have as much left as they thought you did. That way you can take all the vacation you are entitled to plus get credit for doing the right thing even though you could have gotten away with more.
