Consider that someone notices your excessive vacation and complains to someone other than your boss. They find out you took too much. And they care.

Not only will you have to repay it, but you can't even wave your email that says you have X days. Even if you have that email, everyone will know YOU knew you didn't have that much vacation. Your reputation will be shot. It's like the person who plays stupid that they didn't notice an excess amount in their paycheck. Nobody believes them.

You might really boost your standing at work if you only take the vacation you have coming to you, and if you are asked at the end of the year why you didn't take it all, you can say the records were wrong and you didn't have as much left as they thought you did. That way you can take all the vacation you are entitled to plus get credit for doing the right thing even though you could have gotten away with more.

New email to HR:

"Could you double-check to be sure? I've misplaced my records of what time I took off & it seems like I took off more time than that. I didn't think I had that much time remaining."

I'm assuming when you e-mailed payroll you said something like "Could you verify how many vacation days I have left?" as opposed to "You forgot to deduct the 14 vacation days that I took this year - could you fix on that?"

Not only this but it could come back to bite your boss in the ass too OP. If you are truly cool with him you need to be covering your butt and his by notifying HR of this discrepancy.

Definitely notify payroll of the mistakes you've found. It's better to get it taken care of sooner, rather than later. I've had to perform rebuilds on accrual statistic/log tables because of errors that have been corrected that changed past years... so yeah, just take care of it now.

I'm in HR -- tell your payroll department. It's probably not your boss' call. If they find out later, they'll (probably) still take it away from you.

HR/Payroll departments seem to always have a way of finding their mistakes and fixing them by taking the money/time away from you at the most inopportune times.
"Leaving for 2 weeks in Aruba? Sorry, we found an error in your vacation account and you only have 6 days. You can't go." OR, you actually take the 2 week vacation, expecting to be paid for all the time, and you get back to a check that is 4 days short..."Oh, we found an error in your vacation account and corrected it."

IMO, this is just the same as being overpaid. YOU NEED to bring this to their attention and IF there's the error you think there is, get it corrected.

This is a matter of honesty and ethics.

Mr. Lumbergh told me to talk to payroll and then payroll told me to talk to Mr. Lumbergh and I still haven't received my paycheck and he took my stapler and he never brought it back and then they moved my desk to storage room B and there was garbage on it...

Meh, who cares if you have the money to cover the time. Either they'll figure it out and dock your pay or they won't and you got free vacation. Either way, you got more time off work to do things that actually matter in life.

like everyone says, you should definitely have it looked into and corrected... otherwise, i also agree that it will be discovered and "corrected" by payroll. either say something or just be prepared to get money taken from you when they figure out their error.

THIS

they will do a quarterly SOX audit soon, and determine the error. You'll end up owing them

I just went through this and posted about it on here

They will come back and get their money, unless you are entirely forthcoming and they still don't care, they will always come after you sooner or later....

Bring it up with them, you will be glad you did later
