The denials are poorly worded. I would go with, "At no time did I attempt to prevent the President from looking like an ass."

Lol he has his wife out there telling people to stop being mean to him. What a real manly man.

I couldn't imagine Tricky Dick asking Pat to do that.

SO..... now it's going to be lie detector testing for every Tump administration staff?
:D :D :D
And THEN WHAT?
THE RACK?
Bamboo shoots under the fingernails?
A dose of Putin poison? The deadly kind?
Tar and feathered?
Sent to bed without supper?
Taking away their car keys?

Forget about the spy in the Whitehouse. That isn't the big story here....
The BIG story and what ALL republicans should be shocked over especially the Mitch McConnell's in congress is how this child Donald Trump is responding to the possibly of a spy in the Whitehouse.
What republicans do not realize, and I say this over and over in the forms, is that at SOME POINT Donald Trump will come after YOU!
YOU... his loyal diehard supporters.
At SOME POINT, his people, his supporters will do something or say something that rubs Donald the wrong way.
And once that happens LOOK OUT Trump supporters.
Donald will come after YOU!!!! :D
I LOVE THIS.... ;) I really do :)

I think it’s pence

Maybe, but Pence is the one guy in the WH that could have signed his name to without losing his job. It would be interesting to see the VP declare a political war against the President. With the VP saying that it would probably be enough to split the Republicans, and might even be enough to get the Cabinet to seriously consider Article 25.

I don't think Trump has thought this through. Not that that's anything unusual. But what is the point of this witch-hunt, lie detector tests, etc.? What will they do if they figure out who it is? No classified material was disclosed and the letter isn't specific enough to disclose any prosecutable crimes. The point being, all they can do is fire the person in question. That person will then be known to the public, and will probably go on TV and talk more explicitly about how awful Trump is. Which is what several people here think s/he should have done anyway instead of an anonymous letter.

I just don't see any endgame here for Trump's witch-hunt approach. Tactically, it is better for Trump if this person's identity remains a secret.

I think it’s pence

If the NYT is to be believed, it's not Pence. First paragraph of the article-

The Times is taking the rare step of publishing an anonymous Op-Ed essay. We have done so at the request of the author, a senior official in the Trump administration whose identity is known to us and whose job would be jeopardized by its disclosure. We believe publishing this essay anonymously is the only way to deliver an important perspective to our readers. We invite you to submit a question about the essay or our vetting process here.

The only thing jeopardizing his job would be impeachment.

I don't know how people who voted for this guy see this as anything but a sign they made a horrendous mistake.

I really want it to be Jared and Ivanka. I won't ask for anything for Christmas if it is them.

Be so epic if everyone tested fails lie detector test
It's quite interesting how the Darling of Libertopia, Rand Paul, would even suggest that. Spread the FUD! I mean, lie detector tests for the President's cabinet? Are you out of your mind?

Putin is laughing his ass off, of course. The stupid fucking Americans actually fell for it & now they're tearing themselves apart over Trump. Get the popkorn, comrades!

I don't see the upside for Pence if it was him. This is Washington, sooner or later the identity will leak out. If it is Pence and he doesn't resign (as Trump will surely-and rightfully demand) his job duties for the next two years will be cleaning WH toilets. He will never get the GOP nomination and his dream of leading a Christian Nation will will be absolutely dead.

The author is someone who could give two cents about his/her future in the GOP. It seems these days the only national GOP politicians with any semblance of guts or integrity is either dying or retiring.

One thing to remember-nothing in that Op-Ed is anywhere near as explosive as what had already come out in multiple books.

The House Judiciary Committee knows whats going on, the whole congress does. The leaders of the House and Senate plan on doing nothing except, like the staffer in question, prevent the worst instincts of Trump from affecting the country. The crime is that Trump is incompetent, at best, and the Congress is complicit in allowing him to continue on without any public checks on the President. It's a giant hairball of corruption of the highest order.

and this is where we are. Watch as in public and on these pages, the dependable Trumpistas march in lockstep, asking in all honesty: "lol bro: prove to me that incompetence is a crime. lol!"

The window for Trumpists stretches to infinity.

Pence is only Charles and David Koch in an ambulatory discarded human skin. This letter was really only written to and for the benefit of about 12 republican oligarchs.

So I think you are correct.

I doubt it's Pence. I think it's someone who, though "senior" is not as far up, and most importantly, has not repeatedly gone on record defending Trump in public. If I'm not mistaken, Pence has defended Trump's honestly and his stability on at least one or two occasions. If the ultimate point is that whoever this is will reveal himself after Trump is out of power, it's going to look awfully bad if he said things in public which directly contradict what he said in the letter. It will make whoever it is look like as much of an amoral liar as Trump himself. It's one thing to stay mum for awhile. Another entirely to prop up Trump by saying things you know are not true.

It's definitely not Pence. It's also probably more likely to be a nobody than a somebody.

Was described as a "senior administration official." Which could be anywhere from a department head in the White House up to the VP, including on the way, more senior WH staffers and cabinet secretaries. I agree it wasn't likely Pence was someone lower on the food chain, but its' also someone whose name we've at least heard before. I also think this person is very likely a source for the Woodward book, and possibly also the Wolff book.

This editorial is arguing that NYT would never have published the letter had it not come from a major official.

I don't know if he's right, but his argument sounds plausible.
